I got a copy of the Under the Covers CD - it's fantastic! Both Matthew and Susannah obviously really love this stuff, and I'm extremely happy nobody felt the need to \"modernize\" these 60s songs with hip-hop beats, special guest stars, or by cranking up the pressing 'til it clips. I'll have to spend some time with it, but I'm already seeing spending a lot of time in the player.
I finally have the cd and am loving it. And I agree 100% Lexington. Perfect review! The album really reveals itself on repeated lessons. And I like that Susanna and Matthew don't do very much of your typical dueting, but rather more often let one take the lead and the other take the harmonies.
I LOVE "Alone Again Or," "And Your Bird Can Sing," and "She May Call You Up Tonight."

I may only be 24, but my musical tastes have been influenced by my mother and siblings (both younger and older), so I have an interest in folk/classic rock. On my playlist for MP3 and computer:
"Don't Let The Rain Come Down"--Serendipity Singers
"Renegade"--Styx
"Walking In Memphis"--Marc Cohn (a karaoke favorite)
"Break My Stride"--Matthew Wilder
"She's A Beauty"--The Tubes
"Yerushalayim Shel Zahav (Jerusalem of Gold)"--Shuli Natan. The song is an Israeli folk song, and Ms. Natan does a wonderful version.
Let's just say I have an ecclectic taste, as I've been told many times

I just bought "The Essential TOTO" I love 80s music and I love their song "Africa" and "99" and their version of "Georgy Porgy" Sometimes I just like to take it back old school. I spent my early childhood right up to pre-teens in the 80s so I like a lot of the music. The fashion however, is a different story but thats for another thread.

Childhood "Toto" reference...when one of my older sisters was a teenager, her self-appointed "boyfriend" at the time made her a tape (before MP3s, we made recordings with tapes, for you youngins on the board), with the song "Rosanna". My sister's hebrew name is "Resi" (pronounced "RAY-ZEE"). The tape came complete with this boy's declaration of his love for her....
Thanks for the memory jog, Terp. wink

For those of you into acoustically, folk-type of music, check out TYRONE WELLS. His albums, the self-titled one and 'Snapshot' are awesome!
Standout songs include : "Home to Me" (beautiful), as well as "California," "Sea Breeze," "Shade of Blue," "By My Side" and "The Way You Shine."
They're all on iTunes! Great voice, great lyrics and soothing guitars!

First of all, young Falcon, just so you will know, and your children will one day know; Some of those songs are before my time too.
All I did was put "white" in the search and the world opened up. It's amazing what you can find with a simple search. I'm really loving this mellow mix of decades and styles that really have nothing in common but a single word.

Yeah, but "Leader of the pack" is a stone classic for the ages, whereas "Break my stride" is...not. This is a matter of indisputed fact, by the way -
not of opinion. It's been scientifically proven!

"Break my stride" takes me back to freshman year of college. Boy I'm old. I'm not saying I could listen to it every day, but it does hold a certain nostalgia for me. Makes me smile when I hear it (which isn't often, even with LA's horrible radio stations).

I've just listened to a stream of Neil Young's new album,
Living with War. It's pretty damned great, and gave me chills more than a few times. The title track, especially, which has put tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat as I type this.

As usual ursamj, your taste is impeccable. And leave it to Neil to be cutting edge and allow people to stream the whole album before it's even officially released.Haven't heard the whole album yet,but a lot of this is on a par with another of Neil's anti war classics:
Daddy's rifle in my hand
felt reassurin'
He told me,
Red means run, son,
numbers add up to nothin'
But when the first shot
hit the docks I saw it comin'
Raised my rifle to my eye
Never stopped to wonder why.
Then I saw black,
And my face splashed in the sky.
Shelter me from the powder
and the finger
Cover me with the thought
that pulled the trigger
Think of me
as one you'd never figured
Would fade away so young
With so much left undone
Remember me to my love,
I know I'll miss her.

There's nothing wrong with "Break My Stride", other than the attempt to rhyme "China" with "find ya". It's the Puff Daddy crucifixion of said tune (if you can crucify a song that was just OK to begin with), "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down" that's awful. It has the further taint of introducing the world at large to Mase, a rapper presumably chosen to make Mr Daddy look good by comparison.
I got this CD Walkman that plays mp3 discs, so I've been making CDs full of pop tunes from each year. 1985's in the player now. Last ten tracks:
Talking Heads - "And She Was"
Time - "The Bird"
Midnight Star - "Operator"
Don Henley - "Not Enough Love in the World"
Lone Justice - "Ways to Be Wicked"
Howard Jones - "Things Can Only Get Better"
UTFO - "Roxanne Roxanne"
Billy Ocean - "Loverboy"
Go West - "We Close Our Eyes"
Nolan Thomas - "Yo Little Brother". Boy, what a cheesy tune.

I just added Billy Ocean's "Loverboy" to my iTunes. It takes me back to college (just like "Break My Stride"). My current favorite song that I can't get enough of is Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous." Have you seen the video? Is this the same woman who sang "I'm like a bird"? It's like she took a class at the Mariah Carey "How to be a Skank" school. Not that I'm complaining, because it's a fun song and a hot video. I'm just marveling at the makeover.

Well it seems The Chics are becoming embroiled in another controversy. This time it involves their reluctance to appear on The View, and some of the comments they made dissing the show.
I'm personally kind of torn, because I agree wholeheartedly with their choice for a role model, and some of the sentiments they expressed.
However,I'm wondering if they are aware that his wife did actually appear on the show last season, and seemed to really enjoy herself?I know the show is essentially fluff, but for the most part I think it's harmless.

If it's true that they appeared on the View early in their careers to get a jump start, then the Chics should have been more thoughtful about saying that in an interview. But, in the end, they should have a right to choose what programs they will or won't appear on.

As part of my new love for R&B from the seventies (and my attempt to discover music from before my time), I just downloaded "Footsteps in The Dark" by the Isley Brothers. It's awesome! The tune is simple and catchy, but the lyrics are amazing--a great balance between melancholy and love. Too bad people are only familiar with Ice Cube's modern (albeit good) sampling of the song.

I saw the video for Billy Ocean's "Loverboy" last night on VH-1 Classics. It's awful...in that "I can't look away" sort of way. Will the lizard man win the heart of the creepy girl? Or will he just blast her current beau with his laser gun, toss her on his horse, and ride home? Stay tuned...

I still listen to the CD Aliens Ate My Buick once or twice a month.
The song Pulp Culture reminds me of dancing with Rae Dawn Chong at the underground Peace Posse in downtown Los Angeles in the late 80's. Mainly because it was one of the songs we danced to. I wish I had been more comfortable in my sexuality then because I would have in turn been more comfortable with her. She was striking and very sweet. Thanks for the memory jolt Lex.
Budapest By Blimp is one of my favorite songs to this day and the whole album is a fun zany surreal electro-techno-trip. I love a sense a humor in my music.

I haven't posted in this thread in a while. I'm sitll listening to a weird mix of songs.
Country:
"Not Ready To Make Nice" - Dixie Chicks
"Hicktown" - Jason Aldean
"Summertime" - Kenny Chesney
"Drinkin' Me Lonely Tonight", "Honolulu Blue", "Let It Rain" and "Ghost Town - Chris Young
Dance:
"Better That U Leave (Gadjo Remix)" - David Morales with Lea-Lorien
Other:
"Beep" - PCD
"Can't Eat, Can't Sleep, I'm Sick" & "Mermaid" - Namie Amuro
"Startin'" - Ayumi Hamasaki
"Sin Sin Sin" - Robbie Williams
And since Pride time is around the corner, I just had to watch all of my Kylie Minogue concert DVD's Live Down Under, The Fever tour, The Body Language tour and her Showgirl Tour. Next to an Erasure concert, I don't think there's anything gayer than a Kylie concert!
