It's Friday at 3:15 PM. My officemate is out today and the President, whose office is down the hall, just left for the weekend.

Which means I crank up the iTunes and blast Lita Ford's "Kiss Me Deadly." I shamelessly love this song and, for some reason, it's a tradition to play it when I'm alone on the 2nd floor here at work.

Any song that opens with "Went to a party last Saturday night, didn't get laid, I got in a fight" is a classic in my book!

I like one-hit wonders from the '80s. Here are some of my favorites:

"99 Luftballoons"--Nena. I don't understand much of the German version, but I can read the words. And it's infinitely better than the English version. I heard that the lead singer didn't understand any of the words when she sang it in English.

"Johnny, Are You Queer?"--Josie Cotton. I originally thought the song was from the '60s. Nope....

"Jenny/867-5309"--Tommy Tutone. ALWAYS a crowd favorite for karaoke.

"Always Something There To Remind Me"--Naked Eyes. Such an awesome song. "....there is always something there to remind me.....I was born to love you..."

Any of yinz guys have favorite '80s one-hit wonders? Let me know!

Some of my favorites from the 80's off the top of my head...

Living in a Dream - Pseudo Echo
Arizona Sky - China Crisis
65 Love Affair - Paul Davis (I think)
Come on Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners
Captain of Her Heart - Double
Another Holiday - The Other Ones
Baggy Trousers - Madness
Jump - Aztec Camera
Falconpride
The only song from that group I realize is "Come On, Eileen". NO clue about the other songs. Maddog, I think you have a more eclectic taste in music than I do. That takes talent...congratulations tongue.gif .

I'm probably a bigger 80s geek than you, Maddog - I insist on pronouncing the "Captain of Her Heart" band doo-BLAY. biggrin.gif

Yep, Paul Davis. Doo-wop, diddy-wop, diddy-wop do.

To keep up with all the 80s-ness afoot, I threw together a playlist in my iTunes. Some are one-hit wonders, others not.

"Pop goes the world" - Men Without Hats

Have you ever seen/heard of a set of compilation cds called "Living in Oblivion"? There were 5 (possibly 6, tho I never saw it, only heard it might have existed) discs that came out in the 90s loaded with songs from 80s American and British acts. Some were big hits, others were fairly obscure, but most were full enough of good stuff to be worth getting. Every once in a while I'll take them to work with me and listen there when it's kinda quiet. Some of my favorites from these discs are:

"Get It On" - Power Station
"Living In a Box" - Living In a Box
"Running Up That Hill" - Kate Bush
"Destination Unknown" - Missing Persons
"Hanging On a Heart Attack" - Device
"Are You Sure" - So
"Souvenir" - Rubber Rodeo
"More Than Physical" - Bananarama

Also a fan of (but not on those discs, sadly):

"Holiday" - the Other Ones (LOVED that song!)
"Bridge of Spies" - T'Pau
"Shattered Glass" - Laura Branigan
"I Want To Be Your Property" - Blue Mercedes
anything from "Let It Bee" by Voice of the Beehive
"Different Story" - Peter Schilling
"Baby Baby" - Eighth Wonder
"True Faith" - New Order

I've got all five LIO discs. There was no sixth - EMI went under soon after volume five came out, and once they were resurrected, they didn't bother putting out the sixth. I don't know if they even got a playlist together for it. I was listening to 80s music off the hard drive yesterday, and Inteferon's "Get Out of London" came up - pretty sure I ripped that from Volume 4. Rhino's Just Can't Get Enough series was also great - lots of great music both popular and obscure.

Here's a puzzler. How come Anything Box didn't show up on any of the Living in Oblivion CDs, and Depeche Mode wasn't on any of the Just Can't Get Enough discs?

LXN
CycloneMatt
Cool - good to know (finally) what happened to the last Oblivion disc I had heard about. Sucks they never put it out there. I guess there would have been at least two people who would have bought it. wink

As for the puzzler, I guess that will have to remain a question for the ages...

Falcon,
I don't think this can qualify as a
one-hit wonder because first of all,it is a remake.I believe Dionne Warwicke originally recorded that song in the late 60s or very early 70s.
Also,Naked Eyes did have another hit with a song called "Promises,Promises"

Dionne Warwick did in fact cover it in 1968, but it was originally made popular in 1964 by shoeless Brit waif (and Morrissey inspiration) Sandie Shaw.

Her song, "Not Me, Not I" is also beautiful, as is "In My Own Time."

Wow this is eerie. Just last week, a couple of co-workers and I were discussing Toto's "Africa" and the meaning of the song. What a coincidence!

Actually, every week, we bring up a different band in the 70's/80's. A couple weeks ago it was Ratt, then Judas Priest and Kiss.

Speaking of the rocker chicks, this weekend I saw that Joan Jett has a new single out so I d/l it from itunes. It's a tune called "AC/DC" and its about a gal who may or may not be into the ladies. It's a fun, rockin' summer song.

And Joan and Lita were in the Runaways together. Coincidence? I think not!

"U Plavu Zoru" Pink Martini
"Mais Que Nada" Segio Mendes

"Afraid" Nelly Furtado

"Minimal" - Pet Shop Boys
"Move over darling" - Doris Day
"Goodnight and go" (Immmi's radio version) - Imogen Heap
"Heartbeats" - The Knife
"Lilian" (Chab vocal remix) - Depeche Mode
"Waterproof" - Sparks
"Walking away" (Tocadisco remix) - The Egg

"Dangerous heady love scheme" - Merz
"Monologue" - She Wants Revenge (hilarious!)
"Dance like a monkey" - New York Dolls
"Mrs. Hughes" - Scritti Politti

Since xxxxxxJim mentioned Pet Shop Boys:
"Minimal", "Fugitive" and "Integral" are on my ipod. Btw, I love "Silent Shout" by The Knife. Eerie, moody, but cool.

"The Mating Game" album by Bitter:Sweet. Very tres chic album. Think Morcheeba/Thievery Corporation with 60's flourishes thrown in. It's Awesome. Perfect cd for those summertime cocktail parties. One of the tracks is on "The Devil Wears Prada" album.

Country:

"Amarillo Sky" - Jason Aldean
"Drinkin' Me Lonely Tonight" and "Let It Rain" by my Avatar baby Chris Young
"Beer In Mexico" - Kenny Chesney. Have one!
"Every Mile A Memory" The new one from Dierks Bentley
"My Give A Damn's Busted" - Jodee Messina. Love the title, love the song.
"Before He Cheats" - Carrie Underpants. Who knew she could have psycho chic in her? She keys the car, smashes his headlights, and rips up his leather seats. Nice.

Old Stuff:

"Walking in LA" - Missing Persons
"Word Up" - Cameo
"Who's That Girl" - Eurythmics
"My Heart Is In Your Hands" & "Control" - Jimmy Sommerville where he doesn't sing in falsetto!
"Hot Stuff", "With Your Love" - Donna Summer
"The Boss" - Diana Ross
"Big City Nights" - Scorpians
"Barracuda" - Heart
"Treat Me Right" - Pat Benatar

I am currently listening to a 70's piece of music..."Chameleon" by Labelle. This was the last recording by this group before Patti LaBelle went solo. Let me say that I realize that this might not be everyone's cup of tea. This is a BIG recording and is at times WAY TOO MUCH...but when you are in the mood for TOO MUCH, this is a good listen. The " I Can't Stand It" refrain on "Get You Somebody New" is as intense as any punk athem.
A 3 women have quite the tendency to oversing on this recording, but I forgive them. The segway between the title track Chameleon and Gypsy Moths is just stunning. Besides any CD that has a song about oral pleasure (Going Down Makes Me Shiver) can't be all bad. I would urge you adventerous types to check it out.

I've developed a mild obsession with the Killers' new single, "When you were young." It's like if The Cars (circa Heartbeat City) collaborated with Jim Steinman. Compressed and bombastic at the same time.

Then there's Justin Timberlake's "SexyBack," which sounds like a leftover from former bandmate JC Chasez's album from a few years back.

"The Makeover" - Jody Watley. This is Ms. Watley's follow-up cd to "Midnight Lounge" and she continues with the electro-lounge sound. This cd includes interpretations of Madonna's "Borderline", Chic's "I Want Your Love", a Carpenters medley, and re-interpretations of some of her previously released material.

Another cd is "Hallelujah Live" which is a covers cd by four Norwegian Artists and their guitars. The four are: Kurt Nilsen (Norwegian & World Idol 1), Espen Lind, Alejandro Fuentes (Norwegian Idol 3 3rd place) and Askil Holm. tracks include "Stay on This Road", "Boys of Summer", "Sail Away", "Never Easy", "Man of Constant Sorrow" and "Hallelujah".

Others:

"Beep" - PCD
"Me & You" - Cassie
"Wo Wa" - Namie Amuro - J-pop mood.
"Tim McGraw" - Taylor Swift
"Every Mile A Memory" - Dierks Bentley
"Ramalama (Bang Bang) - Roisin Murphy
"Get It Get It" - Scissor Sisters - To tide me over until "Ta Dah" is released next month.

Earlier Scissor Sisters songs sounded like they were heavily influenced by 70s music, especially disc. The current single actually sounds like it IS a 70s song. I'll have to give it some time to see if it grows on me more.

I picked this up at the Virgin Megastore when it was initially supposed to be released a few months ago. (Official official release date is tomorrow.) Anyway, I think the remastered sound is great, and it's really great to have those extended versions on cd. Prince is my favorite.
Lexington
I also got the Prince disc, and while I'm happy, I wish they would've simply sold the 12" version disc separate. I didn't really need the first disc (although the mastering is well done). In fact, there were plenty of other 12" mixes missing - "Mountains", "I Wish U Heaven" and especially "I Would Die 4 U" come to mind, so this could've been a 2-disc 12" mixes collection.

We also listened to the Paris Hilton CD. I don't think there's a CD I've ever wanted to hate more than this one. And I can't. It's good. Yes, the reggae sounds forced. Yes, she's not a great vocalist. Yes, even the modest amount of "Paris-ness" on it ("That's hot") is too much. But the producers filled the album with catchy fun songs, and kept the songs within her limited range and singing ability. Because of that, it's actually good. But if ever I'd suggest stealing or illegally downloading an album, it'd be this one. smile.gif
