I'm all about Amy Winehouse right now.
I've seen her debut single on VH1 and I really like it. What do you think of the rest of the album?
Also...what's up with Regina Spektor and Fidelity? I've seen it like 10 times and I still can't decide if I like it or not.

If you like the sound of Amy's voice on "Rehab" and "You Know I'm No Good" (the other single) then you'll probably like the entire album. I love it.
Funny enough, I also love Regina Spektor's "Fidelity." The video's not great, but the song is so catchy. Although Tori Amos called and asked for her image back.

Is it just me or is it a totally different sound - and not a good one.

The two latest releases from the recent "Neil Young Archive Performance Series" are outstanding. All of these are previously unreleased gems from the Neil Young library, both of which have been live performances so far.
Each one is brilliant. "Live at the Fillmore East" features his original guitar buddy Danny Whitten who died of an overdose just before Neil became big. It feaures a very rarely recorded version of "Winterlong", which has only appeared on the "Decades" album previously. All sort of goodies here and the sound quality is superb.
Many of the same comments apply to "Massey Hall 1971". But that's a solo Young performance against a Canadian college audience, and they love him. Simply haunting acoustic versions of all your favorites. Thing about Neil Young, no matter how many times he records older songs, he makes a new statement that makes the performance particularly special.
This new series is a goldmine for Neil Young fans. He is probably the most creative and prolific songwriter/composer of this genre, even considering Bob Dylan. Watch for the new releases to keep making it to market, there's so many phases of his career I can't wait to see what else they have back there in the vaults.

Okay I have to say it just cuz they are my favorite band and they haven't any love in the US but my boys Fran, Dougie, Andy and Neil released their 5th album today. I cleared my Ipod and it only includes;
Travis - The Boy With No Name.
I've only listened to the first five tracks (I'm taking it slowly like a fine wine) and even though
Closer is the debut single, of the first five songs, I really like
Selfish Jean. I'm going to listen to the 6th song tomorrow. Cheers!

Excellent choice - I have been following them since the late 1990's and they seem to be able to have some staying power; I liked their 1999 album 'The Man Who' and I like the new album better. Wait till you hear the 9th track "Under the Moonlight" - very nice.
Caught them at one of the big clubs over here last year - I don't know why they haven't caught on the other side of the pond.
Actually I was just going to write about them myself - Instead I will tell you that I also downloaded Dolores O'Riordan's new Solo Album 'Are You Listening' ; original stuff, not at all derivative; while still highlighting many of the qualities and showcasing the talent that made the Cranberries such a hit. Listened to it on the train back from Paris yesterday evening.
I also just picked up the new Nils Petter Molvær CD "An American Compilation" yesterday. This Norwegian trumpeter is gaining a reputation as an up and coming Miles Davis. Particularly enjoyed the 'live' second track 'Pure Ether'.
All three highly recommended.

I just saw them at Coachella (which makes the 6th time I've seen them) and it was so amazing to see them again after 4 years. They are still on their game and Frannie is as sweet as ever.
There are many theories why they haven't caught on here. One is because the first video they released in the states
Why Does It Always Rain On Me? was banned by MTV because of the dead goat. I guess that means we didn't get to see the Travis jumpstart the rest of the world did.
Another is that they used to refuse to have their music used for movie and TV soundtracks. They've since changed that policy but I think they missed out on some early opportunities.
And still another is something I've heard a couple of times when I force my friends to listen to Travis. Too much banjo!
Regardless they are my boys and I love their music. I really hope this 5th album gets em a place here.

I'm stoked. My favorite idol has released a new single. It's Kurt Nilsen from Norway and his new song is called "Push Push". It's actually a different sound for him and it reminds me of something from the 80's and shades of U2. His new cd comes out later this year and then early next year, he's releasing a country cd. I aoslutely LOVE this guy's voice. Yeah, he looks like a hobbit but damn he can sing. You can hear "Push Push" here:
Kurt NilsenI'm also listening to Rhianna's "Umbrella", Fergie's "Glamorous", Kelly Clarkson's "Never Again", Joss Stone "Tell Me What We're Gonna Do Now", Amy Winehouse's "Rehab", Mac Murphy's "Enjoy What you Do" (this is the updated version of "Wham Rap", and Maroon 5's "Makes Me Wonder".
From Asia, Namie Amuro's latest "Funkytown" (plus she looks hot & sexy in the accompanying video), Jhett's "Oh Boy" and "Do or Die", and Japanese r&b singer bird's rad debut cd "bird" from a few years back and which I found in Hawaii at a bargain price.
Country? Dierks "Free & Easy (Down the road), Clay Walker "Fall", Rick Trevino "Separate Ways" and Chris Young "Beer or Gasoline"
And the AmIdols: Fantasia "When I See U", "Said I Wouldn't (No More), Blake Lewis "Time of the Seaon", "Love Song", "When The Stars Go Blue" and "You Give Love A Bad Name".
And, the idols who put out unexpectedly cool stuff IMHO: RJ Helton "Secrets", Jim Verraros "Touch", Nikki McKibben's "Unleash Me", "The Lie" and "Save What's Left of Me", and Jon Peter Lewis who I think has put out a solid cd and should be checked out, especially the songs "Man from Amsterdam", "Boy Next Door", "If I Go Away", "Man Like Me", "Gypsy Queen" and "Turn To Grey"

Mavis Staples' "We'll Never Turn Back" (a collection of new songs inspired by the civil rights movement and traditional songs that became classics during that era), and a live Delbert McClinton album from a year ago. Both are excellent, but the Staples album is a true gem. She's not a belter, but she fills every song with undeniable passion. A must-hear for anyone interested in the civil rights era.

Some recent CD purchases (past few months) that I've been listening to:
Cast albums of: Spring Awakening (excellent), Grey Gardens (I tend to listen to certain favorite songs), The Color Purple (lots of filler, but What About Love (reprise)/I'm Here is terrific).
Dixie Chicks: Taking the Long Way. Chix rock!
Nina Simone: Remixed and Reimagined. One can't have too many Nina CDs. Here comes the sun is the best remix.
kd lang: Hymns of the 49th parallel. Cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah is itself worth the price of the CD.
Jann Arden: Uncover me. Uneven cover album. Not Jann's best.

I have become obsessed with reggaeton. I fell in love with it when I went to Puerto Rico three years ago, and have gotten into even more thanks to my trip to Miami in April.
Having said that, I purchased Daddy Yankee's new CD "El Cartel". It is very different from "Barrio Fino", which is a classic due to "Lo que paso, paso". I also have some new songs with Ivy Queen, Tego Calderon, and Daddy Yankee. It's going to be a very latino summer. Oh, and there is a remix of Jennifer Lopez's "Que hiciste" remix that rocks. I think Tony Moran did the remix.

I know there are some country fans out there. I downloaded Emerson Drive's "Moments" a couple days ago. When I listened to it closely and read the
lyrics, I started tearing up. You can watch the video on YouTube, but I would suggest listening to the song first. The song goes in an unexpected direction that is made much more obvious when you watch the videos. Anyone else hear this song?
The lyrics are strong enough, I could see this nabbing a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year.
Even though it lessens the full impact of just listening to the song, I do like the video a lot too. The lead singer is hot. He looks a little like Nick Lachey with a stubble. It's a tearjerker of a video too. I thought it verged a bit too much on "Touched By An Angel" territory, but I'm probably a sucker for sentimental stuff like that.
