White Stripes - "Icky Thump" - they have never, ever let me down...I've been listening to White Stripes pretty much exclusively the past two days, gearing up for the new one...
Also in the mix...
The National - "Boxer" - excellent, love this band
Electralane - "No Shouts, No Calls" - heard good stuff about this one, not disappointed
The new Wilco, "Sky Blue Sky," can't get enough, and of course I went back and listened to all my Wilco stuff over and over and over...

A friend of mine burned the new Erasure cd for me, Light at the End of the World. He's a huge fan. Tracks #1 (Sunday Girl) & track #3 (Sucker For Love) I'm not that crazy about. But the rest of it is beautifully produced like all of their recordings.

I just got this CD by Amy Winehouse, Back to Black. She's very good-mostly sounds like early '60's R&B -kind of Etta James-ish in style. Rehab and I'm No Good are great!

Kelly Clarkson's "My December"- Which I love her will to write all of her own music, but the songs/melodies aren't as rounded as well as more developed songwriters. But I am enjoying it in general- definitely not as strong as Breakaway- but a good transition for her career.
Also listening to Idols from around the world- Anthony Callea's "A New Chapter" and Guy Sebastian's "Closer to the Sun".
I do recommend Zamajobe Sithole- Ndawo Yami from South Africa. Nice voice, fun listening.

I got this Stax Records 50th Anniversary Celebration 2-disc set, it's a compilation of lots of soul/blues/R&B-style music from Stax, old-school Memphis, TN label. Lots of popular, well-known stuff (Isaac Hayes, Booker T etc, "Mr. Big Stuff"), as well as some more obscure artists. I think this is a condensed version of a larger box set that was issued, which I'm sure is wonderful, but for me this 2-disc set has been outstanding.

Here's a list of 20 from my iTunes shuffle:
The Onion AV Club has this feature called "Random Rules" where they bring in some musician-type (sometimes from well-known bands, other times from more obscure acts), put their Ipods on shuffle and make them explain the first five songs that pop up. It's pretty interesting, actually, some people have very detailed explanations about why they like a certain band, where they first heard them, etc. (which is how I would be in that situation). Other times it's basically like "Oh, I like this..." This feature is where I first heard of the band Islands, and they're one of my favorites now. Anyhow, just thought I would share... AV Club has really good interviews and stuff too...

"Someone great" - LCD Soundsystem, Sound of Silver
I wish that we could talk about it
but there, that's the problem
with someone new I could have started
too late for beginnings
the little things that made me nervous
are gone in a moment
I miss the way we used to argue
locked in your basement
I wake up and the phone is ringing
surprised as it's early
and that should be the perfect warning
that something's, a problem
to tell the truth I saw it coming
the way, you were breathing
but nothing can prepare you for it
the voice on the other end
the worst is all the lovely weather
I'm sad, it's not raining
the coffee isn't even bitter
because, what's the difference?
there's all the work that needs to be done
it's late for revision
there's all the time and all the planning
and songs to be finished
and it keeps coming till the day it stops
I wish that we could talk about it
but there, that's the problem
with someone new I couldn't start it
too late for beginnings
you're smaller than my wife imagined
surprised you were human
there shouldn't be this ring of silence
but what are the options?
when someone great is gone
we're safe for the moment
saved for the moment
I just keep coming back to this album. Every time I play it feels like the first!
