I've been on a big Chicago-music kick for the past week or so, since I went there for a wedding. Listened to Wilco, Jesus Lizard, Liz Phair, the Fiery Furnaces (they're from Chicago originally), Make Believe (not sure if they totally count, but whatever) and the Ponys (I bought their latest while in ORD). I know a lot of Chicago artists are not included here, I just sort of went with what I had, the ones I knew had some Chicago connection. None of this in any way included the band Chicago, not really so into them right now.

The Doors Collection (Collector's Edition).
Shoot me or whatever, but I liked the Doors in high school and developed a particularly deep appreciation for their work in college (there's a reason for that, I'm sure) then sort of forgot them for awhile (wonder why?). Then last year I got a friend of mine's Doors CDs and started listening, and good heavens they just suck. I pretty much actively dislike them now. I do like "Five to One," but really because you can kind of listen to it as a big "F**k You" to all the stuff the Doors supposedly stood for (which I appreciated very much in college). Okay, I also like "Spanish Caravan." But that's it. "The End" is just the most pretentious crap I've ever heard. I despise that song. I'm just saying.
On the plus side, the New Pornographers new album Challengers is out in less than a month. I'm going to dress up as Neko Case and camp out in front of Best Buy the night before so I can beat the crowds and be the first to get it.

Yeah, the Doors have some undeniably great pop songs, almost in spite of themselves. For me, it's just a matter of getting past Jim Morrison's really rather embarassing lyrics - sorry, "poetry" - and his overblown sense of importance (made worse by the fact that it's been carried on so relentlessly by Ray Manzarek).
Right now, I'm going through the collection and pulling stuff I haven't listened to in years. This week, I've been rediscovering my New Zealand pop obsessions, The Verlaines and The Chills.
I just love it when albums hold up!

Dude, I've totally been meaning to get into the Verlaines, haven't gotten around to getting any of their stuff yet. Now will also check out the Chills.
If there are any Yeah Yeah Yeahs fans in these parts, they have a new EP out called "Is Is" that is pretty awesome. It sounds a bit more like "Fever to Tell" than "Show Your Bones," both of which I like but in different ways. Their s/t EP is just spectacular, also.

The trouble is that the two best Verlaines LPs (three, including a comp of early singles) are completely out of print.

But

...and my new favourite band is White Rabbits. "Fort Nightly" is spectacular.
Also, got Broken Social Scene's second LP, "You Forgot It In People," and it is exhilarating. Say what you will about Canadians, they make some damn fine music.
I just noticed how quaint the title of this thread is - "What's playing on your CD player..." I'm not all-out into downloads yet - I love to go get a CD on the day it comes out - but when I get a CD, it's on the player in my computer for however long it takes to copy it, then it's hardly ever heard from again. All the stuff I download I copy to a CD just as a backup, but I don't even have a proper CD player.

So every time I open this thread now, at the top of the page I see "'C**ts are still running the world'" - and I hate the c-word, and only use it in the most extreme circumstances (like when watching clips from "My Super Sweet 16") and even then I use it sparingly, so at any rate at this point I'm just posting to hopefully hurry up a new page that will have someting nicer at the top.
Right now I'm listening to Broken Social Scene's "Feel Good Lost," which is great Sunday-morning-read-the-paper-drink-coffee-chill-out music.

I'm listening to the best-of collection ("Everything is Possible") from Os Mutantes, this whacked-out Brazilian band from back in the 60s and 70s. Pretty awesome.
Also got the new New Pornographers CD, "Challengers." It's pretty good, but not as immediately, jarringly catchy and lovable as their three previous releases. Very strong though. Whereas the first three were "driving around with the top down" CDs, this new one is more of a "drinking coffee and reading the paper on Sunday morning" sound. It's been described as a "grower" in about a billion different reviews, but it very much requires more intense listening to "get it."
For what it's worth, there have been a lot of "growers" this year, including "Boxer" by The National (which I liked at first but have grown to adore); and the new Modest Mouse and Interpol albums, both of which I was iffy about at first but now either love (Modest Mouse) or like very much (Interpol).

As part of my continuing (wow, that's easy to misspell in a very bad way) effort start a new page on this thread and get the hideous c-word off the top of the page, I went on a bit of a music bender this past weekend. I got...
Bauhaus - "In the Flat Field" - I've heard of this band a zillion times, most recently when Interpol or Ponys are compare to them, so finally got the CD. It's pretty awesome. Very goth/gloomy, but in a good way. I don't like to be too happy.
Cocteau Twins - "Heaven or Las Vegas" - I have "Head Over Heels" and love it, so when I saw this at a thrift store in my neighborhood this weekend for $2, I grabbed it. Awesome. It makes me realize I need to find somebody to make out with, it's that kind of sound.
Misfits - awesome, this like death punk sound, I dig it, it makes me just want to f**k my brains out. Any record with the songs "Mommy Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight" and "Die, Die My Darling" (Sideshow Bob translation: "The, The My Darling") right in a row is awesome.
Elvis Costello - "Armed Forces" - Why did it take me so long to get around to getting this? Awesome, obviously.
The Move - "Message from the Country" - so I was looking for this one ELO song and happened to stumble upon this, The Move was a sort of precursor to ELO, I guess at some point Jeff Lynne joined The Move and slowly shaped it in his own image, setting the stage for the eventual formation of ELO - one of my all-time favourites evah. Anyway, this shit is whacked, I heart it.
Scissor Sisters - "Ta Dah" - I also found this at the thrift store for $2, and thank goodness - I hate it. HATE IT!!! It is just annoying as all get out. It's not even an "oh, just not my cup of tea" thing, after about three songs I actively disliked this band and everything about them. I think I have to surrender my gay membership card now.
I've kind of taken over this thread, come on people, help me out, I know you listen to music.

God, what a great, great album. My very first EC purchase, back at the tender age of...what, twelve? And even though I loved it, I didn't fully appreciate it at the time. Nina Simone - 'Destiny' album; practically a reissue of 1987's Live & Kickin.
Destiny's version of "Four Women" is especially good, with a slightly funkier left-hand piano line than the original and a rock-inspired drumbeat that works really well.
A reminder of just how good she was.

Other than the new Ben Harper CD, I'm working all old/old-ish material. The new Ben Harper is beautiful.
Noisettes, What Time Is It Mister Wolf? I've worn out Noisettes, anticipating their US tour. But I'll be darned if they didn't cancel their US tour. Grrrrr!!!
Mark Ronson. He fronted the "house band" at tonight's VMAs, which I watch partly because he was there and partly because friends/insiders recommended several performances. I've downloaded a whole bunch of Mark Ronson tunes, primarly on the strength of his new version of "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before." I'm trying to warm up to Daniel Merriweather, who sounds Terrence Trent Darby-ish on the "Stop Me" remake, but I'm not completely sold...
The Dirtbombs. Can't wait for the new Dirtbombs CD to come out, so I've had Ultraglide in Black and Dangerous Magical Noise in pretty heavy rotation.
and the two best hip hop CDs of last year: The Coup's Pick a Bigger Weapon and Game Theory by The Roots.
