Noisettes, What Time Is It Mister Wolf? I've worn out Noisettes, anticipating their US tour. But I'll be darned if they didn't cancel their US tour. Grrrrr!!!
Dude, the Noisettes kick so much ass. The lead singer is like the love child of Grace Jones, Macy Gray and the chick from Bow Wow Wow. I mean that in a good way.

Mark Ronson. He fronted the "house band" at tonight's VMAs, which I watch partly because he was there and partly because friends/insiders recommended several performances. I've downloaded a whole bunch of Mark Ronson tunes, primarly on the strength of his new version of "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before." I'm trying to warm up to Daniel Merriweather, who sounds Terrence Trent Darby-ish on the "Stop Me" remake, but I'm not completely sold...
I don't sense the TTD vocal resemblance, personally. Highly recommend the Mark Ronson CD (if I haven't already mentioned it in this thread).

The Puppini Sisters?
Just bought this CD...............best fresh rendition of "I Will Survive".
Review from Artist Direct:
When you hear "nouveau Andrews Sisters," a frequent description of the Puppini Sisters (and one they don't disavow, with their studied 1940s look), chances are your reaction is either "Hooray! Someone who can sing!" or "Who needs yet another version of 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy'?" Their debut album, Betcha Bottom Dollar, contains slightly less great singing than expected and slightly more rehashing of classic songs than one would want, but anyone who's ever had a weakness for The Lawrence Welk Show will appreciate the close harmony wholesomeness that comes across like an extra-mayonnaisey sandwich. That is, grasping for nostalgia or not, the Puppinis' co-mingling of vocals is beautiful.
Very much looking forward to more of their music.

So there are a couple of CDs that will probably not be on my player or computer any time soon, but not because I particularly dislike the artists or the music. They are...
1) Rufus Wainwright, the new one, forget what it's called, something sweeping and melodramatic, I'm sure: I love his first 3 1/2 albums (counting Want 1&2 as sort of combined), but he's so overexposed at this point, and his schtick/sound is just so played, to me. I just don't have the energy to jump into another one of his works. Plus one song is supposedly about him hooking up with the guy from the Killers, and it has a line like "Your breath smells like potato chips" or something (I'm going from memory here), but in a good way, maybe? - and that just completely turned me off from the whole endeavor.
2) Bjork, the new one, forget what it's called, something quirky and playful, I'm sure: I love Bjork, but her work has really started sounding the same to me, to the point that I just can't see a reason to invest any time in trying to figure out another one of her CDs. I can just listen to "Debut" or "Post" or some Sugarcubes stuff and be pretty satisfied.
With both of these, it also comes down to there being so much music in the world that it's overwhelming, and I have to decide whether I want to try out somethiong new from a completely new band, or if I want to give it another go with somebody I'm not expecting much out of at this point.

MARY J BLIGE-JUST FINE
THAT SONG IS MY JAM RIGHT NOW!!! I'm playing it in the morning, I'm listening to it on the treadmill, its on when I'm cooking dinner. Its just one of those songs that makes you want to get up and start jammin!!!
So I like what I see when I’m looking at me
When I’m walking past the mirror
No stress through the night, at a time in my life
Ain’t worried about if you feel it
Got my head on straight, I got my mind right
I ain’t gonna let you kill it
See I wouldn’t change my life, my life’s just…..
Fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, oh
Fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, oh
Just fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, oh
See I wouldn’t change my life, my life’s just fine
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I also like J. Holiday's "BED", Trey Songz' "Can't Help But Wait", and One Republic's (courtesy of Timbaland) "Apologize"
Oh and American Idol's Blake Lewis has released his first single. Me no likey!

I expected more of a song with a good beat that I could jam out too but I don't like it. Hopefully the rest of his album will have better songs.

This one is obvious for me.
Blake Lewis: "Audio Day Dream". After a couple of spins, I'm loving it. Two songs, "1000 Miles" and "End of the World", sounds like it they could be directly off of an Erasure cd and another song really sounds like Maroon 5. It's a very retro soundign cd and it definitely fits the "Mix tape feeling" analogy that Blake uses to describe the cd. 1st single "Break Anotha" is actually one of the weaker tracks on the cd IMHO. Some songs are a little sappy but they are still melodic. Mr. Lewis co-wrote all of the songs except one. Chris Richardson, nasal boy, also co-wrote one song with Blake. Overall, I thought he did a good job with the song selection.

Mary J. Blige's "Growing Pains". I love it. So far my favorite tracks are: Work That, Grown Woman, Just Fine, and my favorite because I am at the preliminary stage of a relationship Hurt Again.

In another thread we talked about the B-52's new cd. Now, another oldie, but goodie, the fabulous Donna Summer has a new song out called "I'm A Fire". It's a cut from her upcoming cd called "Crayons". I am digging the Solitaire club mix. It's also in English & Spanish. This one is going to ignite the dance floors!
La Summer sounds magnificent on the song.
I am still enjoying the Jody Den Broeder remix of Rihanna's "Don't Stop The Music" as well as Jody's handling of Janet's "Feedback".
On the Euro front, checking out these pop songs:
"L.I.L.Y." - Kate Ryan
"Speak 'N Spell" - Elin Lanto
"Thelo" - Despina Vandi
"Tiffany" - Nixon
"DJ Take Me" - DJ Ella
"Enjoy The Ride" - Morcheeba

Janet: "Feedback", "Rock With U", "LUV" and "Rollercoaster".
Kelly Rowland: "Work (Steve Pitron & Max Sanna Mix)". This one is HOT! Put it in, Put it in!
Kylie Minogue: "Boombox" which includes remixes of tracks off of "X" and also includes "Rippin' Up The Disco"
Donna Summer: "I'm A Fire (Solitaire Club Mix)"
Kate Ryan: "L.I.L.Y"
Britney: "Break The Ice". Rumor has it there is a Kaskade remix of this song floating around.
Jimmy Somerville: Tracks off of his fantastic cd "Home Again".
And finally, one of my J-pop divas Namie Amuro with "What A Feeling". This one is the final song in the 3 single triology for Vidal Sassoon's Japanese campaign. The first single was 60's "New Look" and sampled The Supremes' "Baby Love", the second was the 70's inspired "Rock Steady" sampling Aretha, and the final 80's inspired "What A Feeling" which samples Flashdance. This one is probably my favorite of the 3 singles, but my favorite video is the one for "New Look". "What A Feeling" is begging for a remix.

To add to my idol collection, I just got JPL's new single "Break the Silence" on itunes as well as Stevie Scott's "Close The Door" and "I Know Better Next Time".
"Funplex (CSS Extended remix)" - The B-52's.
And, laugh all you want, but my current guilty pleasure is the Brad Walsh remix of Ashlee Simpson's "Outta My Head". love it. Brad Walsh is the DJ/artist who's song "Control Me" was used by Christian Siriano in his Project Runway Fashion Week show. He doesn't radically alter "Outta My Head" but other than pumping up the groove to make it a toe tapping thumper. Ay ya ya ya ya. Actually it fits well with the B-52's!
Check it out.
On to Japan. First Namie releases "What A Feeling" and now my other fave J-gal & fashion icon Ayumi Hamasaki releases "Mirrorcle World". Basically it's an extended version of the 2 minute song "Mirror" that is on her latest cd "Guilty". This song qualifies as "rock" Ayu. In a few months, top remixers from around the world are going to remix some of her hits as she prepares to release the next in her Ayu Remix series. The song "Mirrorcle World" is the CM in Japan for the Panasonic Lumix cameras.
The video makes no sense at all except it was filmed in Paris and Ayu looks amazing. The red dress in the video is "Fierce". Avex is notorious for taking down videos so if you want to check it out...look quick! Otherwise you will have to search for it.

I have been listening to 99% Janet Jackson since "Feedback" was released. Discipline is the best collection of music she's put together in a long, long time ... I'd say since Velvet Rope. The first several songs on the album are perfect - "Feedback," "LUV," "Rollercoaster," "Rock With U," "2nite" and "Can't B Good." I wish the album carried that momentum throughout, but it falls apart a bit in the middle thanks to Jermaine Dupri's sappy R&B-lite. I really wish the whole cd would have kept the club vibe going.
"Rock With U" is one of my favorite Janet songs ever. It seems to be pretty much DOA in terms of radio reception or video airplay, but here in New York, I hear "Rock With U" and "Feedback" all the time when I'm out. Thank God I'm gay and urban!
If I do happen to stray off of Miss Jackson, I've been listening various mixes for Mimi's "Touch My Body," Madonna's "4 Minutes," Amy Winehouse's "Valerie," Kelly Rowland's "Work (Put It In)", the B52s "Funplex", Leona Lewis's "Bleeding Love", and Laura Kidd's "Automatic."

I was listening to a continuous mix track and there were two songs that stood out for me that I had not heard before.
One track caught me totally off guard and it was the wideboys mix of Snoop Dogg's "Sensual Seduction". I had no idea it was Snoop. The sound is totally different than any song I've heard from him. The track followed Janet's "Rock With U"
The other was the last track of the mix. At first I thought it was Amy Winehouse but the more I quickly realized that it wasn't Amy's voice. The singer is Duffy and she's from the UK. I think she's Welsh. She is yet another white girl soul singer from the UK who's music is heavily influenced by 60's Motown. Duffy sounds like a young Dusty Springfield. Her "Mercy" could be this year's "Rehab" but instead of "No, no, no" "Mercy" starts out with "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah". It's a toe tapper and needs to be played loud!
Check it out:
"
Mercy"
Also check out her other performances. I also really like "Stepping Stone". I am looking forward to her cd "Rockferry" to be released in the States. Love her voice.

I got an early copy of Mariah's E=MC2 and have been listening to that now. The first time I heard it, I felt very disappointed - it's not as good as Emancipation - but that's alot to live up to. As I've settled in with the cd, it has really grown on me and I can appreciate it in its own right. "I'm That Chick" and "I'll Be Loving U Long Time" are great 70s retro-soul tracks, and "Side Effects" is an unsually dark, aggressive account of her failed marriage to Tommy Mattola. And Mimi goes Jamaican on "Cruise Control," but in a way known only to God and Mariah, she makes it work. I had heard about that song in early reviews and I was afraid, but it's actually one of the best songs on the cd.
I think there are too many guest artists on the songs and they get in the way. If I never hear Jermaine Durpri say "Y'all know what this is" again, it will be too soon. But I am not really a big fan of rap music, so it's hard for me to honestly assess the contributions. I would love to hear a version of "Migrate" without T-Pain, though. His rap is painful, which I guess explains the name.
A couple of classic Mimi ballads, "I Stay In Love" and "Bye Bye," which is the second single. But most of the music is mid-tempo like "Touch My Body." I'm sure there will be some great remixes from the cd, as there were with Emancipation. The remixes from Emancipation were better than the original tracks.
Only a couple of songs - "Last Kiss" and "Love Story" - that I could totally do without.
I am bitter that Mariah's back at No. 1 and Madonna is breathing down her neck at No. 3, yet poor Janet Jackson couldn't get "Feedback" higher than No. 19. I've heard all of Janet's and Mariah's new stuff and three songs off of "Hard Candy." Barring a miracle from Madge, Janet has easily put together the best album.
