bballrob -- Yes, it has Clocks on it. I love that song too. I think if you like that, you'll like the whole CD. It's very atmospherical (if that's a word!), but it rocks too.

btw -- I like Matchbox Twenty too.

I just got Electric Six, Fire, which I'm totally diggin' - it's in-your-face, balls-to-the-wall, rock n' roll, w/ swagger, 'tude, and a smirk.

Also very, very, VERY fond of the new Outkast double CD Speakerboxx/The Love Below. Wonderful, glorious, clever, brilliant stuff.

Right now I'm really into my Best of Stax 4 CD box set. Rufus Thomas. Otis Redding. Carla Thomas. Sam and Dave. The Staples Singers. Issac Hayes. Booker T and the MGs and so many other Memphis/Southern soul legends of the 60's and 70's. Great stuff here.

I just picked up the new Dirtbombs CD and I love it. Check out sound clips here:

My favorite tracks are Stop and Fido, although Get it While You Can rocks quite nicely, too...

I'm also a pretty hardcore Basement Jaxx fan. Their new CD "Kish Kash" is a glorious mess of house vs. breakbeat. The fantastically noisy mess features Siouxsie Sioux and Meshell Ndegeocello and has already spawned what I consider one of the best videos of 2003:

Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians - SHOOTING RUBBERBANDS AT THE STARS

Let me speak again of EmmyLou Harris. Her new CD 'Stumble Into Grace' is just fantastic -- so rich both in music and lyric. At times I think she writes like Springsteen. Between 'Stumble Into Grace' and 'Red Dirt Girl' I don't mind getting stuck in traffic. Also both of Coldplay's CDs are great -- 'Parachutes' and 'Rush Of Blood To The Head'.

I just ordered the Beatles "Let It Be - Naked", where it's totally stripped of all the Phil Spector Wall of Sound garbage. Can't wait to hear it, even though I think overall this is one of the weakest Beatles albums (if there is such a thing as a weak Beatles album).

Hey TonkaManOr:
How IS that Dolly Parton CD? I've been meaning to check it out, but I haven't been able to yet.

As for the Dave Matthews CD - I actually had a disc a guy I knew burned for me of these songs from off the internet. I was really impressed because ordinarily he doesn't do anything for me with his band. I do think he's really hot though; so the exposure to new music has been good.

Other than that, I've been rotating pretty much the same disc for awhile:
Megan Mullally - Big As Berry
Joss Stone - The Soul Sessions
Bette Midler - Bette Midler (great stuff, more raw.)
various artists - Songs That Got Us Through WWII
(I'm a little obsessed with WII these days ever since I finally got around to Speilberg/Hank's "Band of Brothers".
NEW: various artists - Wig In A Box (Tribute to Hedwig Johnson).
Glenn Miller - Platinum
TonkaManOR
smrobbins - I really like the Dave Matthews cd. I play it the most of all the cds currently in my car.

Also, the Dolly CD is great. It's interesting to hear other artists renditions of Dolly's songs. My favorites on that album are Joan Osbourne, Shania Twain with Allison Krauss and Union Station and Meshell Ndegecello.

I've been playing the hell out of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Vicious Cycle CD. It's the studio album they released this year with the songs "Red, White & Blue" and the remake of "Gimme Back My Bullets" featuring Kid Rock. There are actually several songs on that album I like better than "Red, White & Blue."

I've also been giving the soundtrack to Singles a spin because it has the Lovemongers' (Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart's side project) version of "The Battle Of Evermore." Also recently in my CD player(s) were The Very Best Of Sheryl Crow and Lisa Marie Presley's To Whom It May Concern. Of course, I've been playing a 2 CD set of Fleetwood Mac's current tour.

I'm a little disappointed in the new Sting, Dido, and (sadly) Sarah Mclachlan, but the John Mayer and Joe Henry are really good. Best of the last few months have been the Pearl Jam B-sides collection and the two Black Rebel Motorcycle Club cd's.

The Chili Pepper's Greatest Hits reminds me that they are better than i remember, while Stone Temple Pilots' reminds me they're not.

I listened to both of Linkin Park's CDs today, as well as a CD I made of my favorite Trisha Yearwood songs.

What do you think of this CD? I do like it, but my main problem with it is that the arrangements and tempos of many of the songs sound too similar. I wish there were more variety: in particular, more up-tempo songs like You're Gonna Hear from Me. My other favorites are Moon River, Smile, Emily. Her performance on Calling You is pretty interesting, too.

He's obviously a big influence since she's a big fan of his, having recorded at least three or four of his songs over the years. I've been listening to her boxed set and Wrecking Ball a lot lately.

And TonkaManOR, I especially like the Emmylou Harris, Shelby Lynne, Joan Osborne, and Allison Moorer songs on the Dolly tribute CD. My absolute favorite, though, is Shania Twain's version of Coat of Many Colors. I've always wanted to hear her sing that song (as well as To Daddy), and was very happy when I found out that she chose this song. The Dolly fanatics who posted reviews on amazon.com, for the most part, HATE Shania's version, but I play it over and over. I would love to hear her make an entire album of traditional country music sometime.

The new Sander Kleinenberg which sucks apart from track 10 on cd 2. I am ashamed to admit that I really like the Coldplay cd, esp 1,4 and 10. And Badly Drawn Boy as always. Saw him live two weekends ago and it was so terrible that we walked out after half an hour (we expected him to be bad--he's a total prat live, and we were prepared to walk out if it was bad as rumored--and he was worse!).

But his music is incredible. Anyone who is bored and wants a sure thing should get everything by him and get ready to fall in love. No, no one cd is better than the other, they are all perfect pop--get them all. I'm too lazy to read the other replies on this thread right now so I don't know if anyone has mentioned him yet.

Someone mentioned gang of four. I really like the Rapture (and I liked them before I knew they were fashionable), but some bore friend of mine lectured me how they are basically a gang of four rip off.

anyway, i've tried to listen to a gang of four's hard, and the music's good but the lyrics are so f**king shitty i can't stand it for very long. does it get better if you keep listening? i know how legendary they're supposed to be, but it's like being in music jail having to listen to them

Believe it or not, I have abandoned the Bangles (briefly) and am currently in a Robbie Williams phase. I like to put in "Escapology," "Sing When You're Winning," "Swing When Your Winning," and "The Ego Has Landed" in the player and have it randomly select songs.

At the gym, I have been doing my cardio to Kylie Minogue's "Light Years." Your disco needs you!

Okay, No one can sing "To Daddy" like EmmyLou. She owns that song. I agree I like that song also. I'm not a big Shania Fan, but I really liked her cover of "Coat of many colors". But then again, the album is a celebration of Dolly. Anyone can sing her music (Whitney Houston, Meshell N, Allsion Krauss), all of her songs tell stories, she's taken looking Trashy to a whole level all its' own. Who doesn't love her?? biggrin.gif

I absolutely LOVE this cd. I bought it when it first was released because I supported Miss Kylie during her "down" years in America. Your Disco is fabulous as is Disco Down, So Now Goodbye, On A Night Like This, Spinning Around, Kids (her duet with Robbie Williams), I'm So High, Butterfly (also included on Fever) was originally on this cd as , Light Years...pretty much the entire cd is classic pure Disco/Pop. There's nothing serious about this cd!

As for other cd's, I like some of the songs on the Linkin Park cd. I think my next purchase will be Cyndi Lauper's "At Last" cd.
Gaga4Gaby
Light Years is pure fun. My personal favorite is "Please Stay." I also am fond of "Love Boat," both for the cheese factor and because I associate it with going to Miami, my favorite city in the world. Some friends had it while we were there last January and I bought it as soon as I got back to freezing cold NYC.

The only song I really don't like is the title track. "Welcome to Kylie Air" is beyond stupid.

How is Madonna's most recent CD?- I've read mixed reviews. I never bought a Madonna CD until Ray of Light and have played that quite often over the last few years.
Have recently purchased Ricky Lee Jones and Cassandra Wilson's latest- both good. Still love Pirates!

Hard is, without question, one of the worst albums ever recorded (apart from "Independence," which was passable). You need to hear Gang of Four's first two albums, Entertainment! and Solid Gold, which are the real stuff.

American Life is really good, but it's a little harsh at first listen. Several reviews i've read weren't good, but you have to give it a chance. It didn't help that the two least interesting songs on it wound up as the singles (AL and Hollywood). Very stripped down and aggressive. I've never liked Ray of Light all that much, other than the title song.

Hey Guys...I love this discussion...I think I have posted at least 3 times on this topic already.
I am in a R&B Mode these days so I am listening to James Brown Live At The Apollo. Mr. Brown has always been an amazing preformer and this is an essential live recording....Someone had asked about Joss Stone...I brought the CD today and totally in love with it....I am going to pass that recording along to the people at work. I would highly recommend Joss Stone's Soul Session. I like a variety of music as long as it is honest and true, this 16 year old kicks ass. Finally I will recommend Al Green's new CD, "I Can't Stop" Willie Mitchell is producing this time and it simple straight forward soul music.

I don't know why Robbie Williams isn't more popular over here. He makes great music. It's very poppy and radio friendly, yet his lyrics remain fresh, interesting, and often with a ton of emotional subtext going on. Actually, now that I'm writing this, I think Robbie's too sophisticated for American radio. American radio plays so much crap.

As for the Madonna album, I bought it out of loyalty and I think it stinks. There are a few good songs right in the middle, and if you're a big fan you may still like it, but there are a lot of subpar offerings on it as well. The "Mother and Father" song is one of the worst things she's ever recorded.

Even worse than the "Bedtime Story" song? That's the song that killed her Top-20 streak. That damn Bjork!!!!
Gaga4Gaby
I like "Bedtime Story." I think it was too smart for radio (that's my theme for the day) but it's a good song. Plus, it was the catalyst for the modern Madonna soung, I believe. At least the lyrics were good. The "Mother and Father" song goes something like there was a time when I was happy in my life. There was a time I had a mother, it was nice.

IT WAS NICE? About having a mother who's now deceased?! That's the most trivial thing I've heard this side of "Welcome to Kylie Air." biggrin.gif

Yeah, I had a little trouble with that lyric too. The only way I would approach the reason why she might have chosen that angle was because in a sense, she didn't really have a mother. It would be hard to qualify a relationship with someone you barely knew. I don't really know what to say to my father sometimes, for that very same reason. I may be stretching, or rabidly loyal, but that's my view.

The problem with this song is that she already dealt with the whole "Daddy treated me bad" stuff years ago in "Oh Father."

By the way--at Madonna.com you can click on "albums" and then select a song and get the lyrics. I just now finally figured out a line from "I'll Remember" that I couldn't ascertain for the life of me. wink

That's better than any rationale I came up with. That makes sense, I suppose, but I still can't get over how trite the lyrics to that song are. Especially because it's got one of the more traditional and catchier hooks music-wise, the painful lyrics make "Mother and Father" that much more disappointing to me. Madonna's so brilliant at changing her style and image, there was bound to be one I didn't like...beatnik poet Madonna is it!

Joe in Philly, I agree. And "Oh Father" is a much better song.
