I bought this electronica compilation. Originally they were sold separately as Vol. 1 & Vol. 2. I was able to purchase both in MP3 format for a VERY cheap price, as you can see. I've been wanting both but they were too expensive individually. At any rate it has 9 hours of music. It's produced/mixed by Ben Mynott, one of England's respected djs. Anyway, here's a sample of some of the music on it:

Patchwork Guilt - Paul Hartnoll Btw, Paul was 1 of the 2 bros of Orbital (one of my all-time fave electronica bands).

Diamondtrack - Cloud

Anytime Soon - Blue Mar Ten

Shower of Sparks - Ott

While not currently on my CD player, I'm hoping Santa will give me the newly-released box set Twelve Nights in Hollywood featuring previously unreleased live recordings of Ella Fitzgerald performing at the Crescendo club in Los Angeles, 1961-1962. A glowing review in the NY Times brought my attention to this Verve release.
QUOTE
Yet Verve has just released “Twelve Nights in Hollywood,” a four-CD boxed set of Ella Fitzgerald singing 76 songs at the Crescendo, a small jazz club in Los Angeles, in 1961 and ’62 — and none of it has ever been released until now.

These aren’t bootlegs; the CDs were mastered from the original tapes, which were produced by Norman Granz, Verve’s founder and Fitzgerald’s longtime manager.

They capture the singer in her peak years, and at top form: more relaxed, swinging and adventurous, across a wider span of rhythms and moods, than on the dozens of other albums that hit the bins in her lifetime.
* * *
Gary Giddins, the veteran critic and author of “Jazz,” agrees. “This ranks on the top shelf of her live recordings,” he said. “It’s about as good as it gets.
SCTrojan
Hmmm! I'll look for it.

FOX News segment on the Lady Gaga/Beyonce Telephone video where some lady named Sandy Rios, president of The Culture Campaign, says things like "We've got Beyonce and Gaga as gay lesbian lovers. It's disgusting!" laugh.gif

Further, it's been reported that one of the sets used in the Telephone video (the diner) has previously been used for a gay porn movie. ohmy.gif (note: I've linked to The Advocate, but if you click on the link in the Advocate article--to gaypornblog.com--that is definitely NSFW wink.gif )

What do people think of the new M.I.A. video Born Free? It was supposedly pulled from YouTube for its graphic violence. I think it's quite amazing. A description of the video.

Alicia Keys' Unthinkable (I'm Ready) featuring Drake

OMG this is my favorite song right now. Beautifully written song by Drake. The video is amazing. Alicia is so beautiful, Chad Michael Murray is hot in it, and the message makes the video so meaningful. She used interracial relationships but I think it could be interpreted in other ways. I would love to see this video about two gay men struggling to be in a relationship while struggling with intolerance from society. I love how the video transitions from the 50s all the way to present day and looks at how intolerant many still are with interracial relationships.

Checked out the French movie Rap et Rai from the library and was oddly fascinated with the smile and music of the Algerian-French performer Cheb Mali.

I've heard Arab music compared to something sounding like falling down stairs but this one vid is more like an Arabic Marc Anthony.

Cheb Mali

He also resembles a friend I knew in the Dominican Republic who was an aspiring singer.

Just watched that video. Very nice.

For the past few weeks I've been listening to a couple of Broadway cast CDs: Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and the revival of La Cage aux Folles. BBAJ is a satiric rock musical (they say it's "emo rock," but, duh, I don't even know what that means) about the seventh president of the United States, and the star, Benjamin Walker, is smokin' hot and adorable at the same time. The La Cage revival features an excellent Kelsey Grammer and Douglas Hodge in a scaled-down version of the lavish 1980's musical featuring boisterous show tunes by Jerry Herman.

Oh, and I'm also listening to American Idiot, the Green Day rock musical and the soundtrack to the movie The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, which is full of gems like I've Never Been To Me, My Baby Loves Lovin', A Fine Romance, and I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine.

17 Apologize – One Republic
18 Sweet Dreams – Beyonce
19 Ask Myself –Robin Thicke
20 Wind Beneath My Wings –Bette Midler

That 20th f*cking song would have to be the only damn Bette Midler song I have on my iPod. They are all non embarrassing except for Wind Beneath My Wings. Even my boyfriend rolled his eyes when he saw this on my iPod!!! It was like the ipod gods got together and wouldn't let me get away scott free. I actually think the list represents the variety of music that I do like. I think it shows I like old school and new school songs. The only thing i think is missing is that I have some rap and heavy metal songs. I think those are the only two types not represented in this 20. It has old school and new school R&B, old school and new school pop, and classical. I like my 20.

A friend of mine tagged me on Facebook for a list like this last year.

Okay, so it's supposed to be from your iPod/mp3 player, but I was working at my computer last night, so I opened iTunes, hit the shuffle mode, and the first list is what came up. However, even though I like all the songs on the list, I would probably skip about half of them if I were on my commute listening to my iPod. Hence, the second list, which is actually from my iPod...

iTunes Shuffle

10 Surrender Your Clothing - Pansy Division (One of the first queercore punk bands. If you love "bands on tour" accounts, please, read founder Jon Ginoli's book, Deflowered: My Life in Pansy Division!)
11 Planet Rock - Afrika Bambaataa
12 Night Ride Across the Caucasus - Loreena McKennitt
13 Phoenix Rise - Maxwell
14 Won't You Listen to What the DJ's Spinning! - Deee-Lite (only 15 seconds, LOL!)

I have tons of music on my iPod, so there's way more jazz, electronic, hip hop and metal than what you see above.

I love the song "Far Away" by Marsha Ambrosius but I had no idea until today that the video presents two Black gay men in love and explores homophobia, gay bashing, and LGBT youth suicide in the Black community. Marsha's song won Record of the Year on the Soul Train Music Awards. After seeing the video, bravo to her for making this music video. Its so powerful and we need more mainstream Black artists to take these kinds of stands. I also read that she premiered the video on BET's 106&Park earlier this year during a special anti-bullying episode which was huge since no images like that had ever been played on the show before. Hopefully it raised awareness and opened some young and old minds. The YouTube link to it is below. Of course there are some ugly remarks in the comment section but its part of the struggle.

The 80s are my favorite music genre and I love the British group Her Majesty & the Wolves. The group is comprised of ex Pussycat Dolls member Kimberly Wyatt and Jupiter Rising member Spencer Nezey. They have a few songs available on US iTunes, but my favorite song of theirs is "Emerald Showers". Like some other British groups, this song and their whole album in which this song is on is only on UK iTunes. Seriously, why does Apple do that? Thank god for YouTube. Anyway...great dance song. Takes me back to the late 80s and my pre teenage years spending summers on the Upper East Side and my cousin sneaking me out late at night to hang in the city with his hot friends. Oh to be a kid again.
