Bought the Cyndi Lauper CD this weekend. I like it.
I don't know if I mentioned this myself; I got the record last week or so, and I really like it too. There's a fullness and richness to her voice that I don't think I've ever heard before. It's striking compared to the goofy sort of singing she used to do (very well, I might add.)
The title track is my favorite so far.

Nostalgic article from Salon demonstrating why music sucks today:
The greatest week in rock history QUOTE
Thirty-four years ago this week, the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Temptations, Santana, Crosby Stills and Nash, and Creedence Clearwater all shared top billing on the Billboard album chart. There's never been another lineup quite like it -- and there will never be again.

I love Cyndi, but don't think At Last is terribly good. She does some great songs and I like her takes on many. I think her voice often sounds strained and the songs as a group don't make a great listen.

Just picked up Ryan Adams' \"Rock'n'Roll\" last week. Strictly for fans of straight-ahead, guitar-driven rock (G_vf, this means you wink ). Kinda U2-ey, kinda Pete Yorn-ey. No big messages songs here, just sex, drugs and, ummm, rock'n'roll.
I actually made it known to anyone who'd listen that I wanted this for Christmas and Santa did indeed bring it! It has yet to leave my CD player! Like you said, just fun R&R. Thanks for the referral!
Also been listening to other loud guitar driven rock stuff and blasting it since my downstairs neighbor moved out back in November. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Long After Dark, Nirvana's Nevermind, U2's The Joshua Tree and Foo Fighters' One by One.

I just got notice that my newest cd, actually, it's a music dvd, is in the mail! The Pest Shop Boys' PopArt! I can't wait.
The latest cd's in my rotation are a World Idol mix cd and a Greatest Hits compilation by Japanese pop idol Namie Amuro. I recently discovered Namie did a side project called Suite Chic that featured some of the biggest r&b names in Japan. I heard samples of the Suite Chic cd "When Pop Hits The Fan" and it's a very cool cd that has a jazzy/r&b/hip-hop feel.
I am also playing the latest cd by Hawaiian superstar Keali'i Reichel.
And, after listening to Norewegian/World Idol Kurt Nilsen's cover of "Hunting High And Low", I have a sudden craving for listening to some A-Ha.

I just got the new Norah Jones CD- feels like home- I am digging it. It was hilarious- I was listening to this country sounding song "Creepin' In" and I'm like- that sounds like Dolly Parton- and it was!! The sound on the CD is like the last one with a bit more country sound to it. If you like the last one- I think you will like this one. Also am listening a bit to Guy Sebastian from Australia- I just can't get over the honesty in his voice and I hope he can make it in the US

I also have a dance music cd. Seal has some killer remixes from his Seal IV album and so does Annie Lennox.
And a song that I hated, HATED as a single, "Miss Independent" by Kelly Clarkson, has been transformed into an absolutely kick ass remixed single (the shanghai surprise remix).

I just happened upon a great cd a few days ago. It's a new artist by the name of Donnie. The name of the album is "The Colored Section". He's a true R&B singer; none of the hip-hop, techno crap in his songs. Just good music and a GREAT voice. Although he is NOTHING to look at, the cd is by far one of the best R&B cds I've bought in a few years. I would consider him in the ballpark with Carl Thomas, Jill Scott, and some of the other NeoSoul singers. GREAT album, everybody that I've let hear it have gone out and purchased it for themselves. My favorite track is #7, "Do Yo Know?".

Lizz Wright--a 24 year old jazz singer out of Georgia. Her first CD, "Salt" is one of the best CDs I've ever heard. She's like a fusion of Dianne Reeves, Cassandra Wilson, and Phyllis Hyman with just a dash of Anita Baker.
the Return of the King soundtrack--for some reason, the neo-Wagnerian music really helps me think.

Jeff Buckley. Grace. Died in Memphis, poor guy.
(To clarify: Dying in Memphis isn't necessarily so bad, just dying in general, especially at 30, especially in a drunk swimming accident. I grew up near Memphis, so things that happen there musically are interesting to me. One or two artists have gotten their starts there, I think.)

JC Chasez's "Schizophrenic" And the title of the cd matches the cd itself. Very sexy and JC experiments with different sounds. Of all the boy band members, I think JC is the one who will experiment the most. Kind of like Robbie Williams stepping away from the boy band image as he got older.
My favorite songs are "All Day Long I Dream About Sex" which has a 80's synth vibe about it. He sings in a monotone/robotic kind of voice while the synths swirl around him. Different and not the sound you expect to hear from a former boy band member. I didn't like the song at first, but the more I listen to it, the louder I play it in the car. "Shake It (featuring the Basement Jaxx)" which samples BT Express' "Do It (Til You're Satisfied), "Come To Me" which samples the throb of Corey Hart's "Sunglasses At Night". This is the song where JC flat out says he's masterbating and sings out "Baby Here I Come" or is it "Baby Here I Cum?". "Everything You Want" sounds like something a younger Sting would have sang. And on one of the songs he sounds like Jay Kay from Jamiroquai. Not for everyone's taste, but it is a different sound than Justin's cd.

Right now, I'm listening to The Golden Hour of The Future - early recordings by The Human League and their forebears, The Future. Really raw, primitive stuff. Some of it's very beautiful, some of it's hilariously funny, and some of it's incredibly tedious. For those synth boffins who think "Being boiled" was too pop and that Cabaret Voltaire sold out when they signed with Virgin.

This always happens. Everytime I get back home after a trip to Hawaii, I listen to my Hawaiian cd's. "Alone In IZ World" is just a beautiful cd. It's so sad that he died at such a young age.
