I waited 2 hours this morning in the Target alcove to buy the
Cities 97 Cities Sampler for my boss and myself. I did buy two, but, if it is like last year, it will sell out by 9:30am today. It is considered one of the most anticipated CDs to purchased in the Twin Cities. I just listened to a little bit of it. It is awesome!! (Uh-oh. I used one too many exclamation points. Eh, screw it.)

I'm slightly hijacking this thread -- I've decided that I'm going to include what's on my iPod here, now that I've got practically every one of my CDs on it. wink However, I'll mention the last 3 CDs I bought: two by Mark Weigle as mentioned in the "Gay Musicians" thread, plus Blondie's "The Curse of Blondie."
But right now my iPod is set on "shuffle" so I'm just listening to random songs. Since about 8:10am or so I've heard 32 different tracks. Here are the most recent dozen (since I don't feel like typing them all out):
It's All Been Said Before - The Supremes (well after Miss Ross left)
Right By Your Side (live) - Eurythmics
Over The Sea - Information Society
I Wonder U - Prince and the Revolution
My Guy (My God) - cast of "Sister Act"
Faces - Blondie
Good Thing (12" version) - Fine Young Cannibals
Gap - Thompson Twins
One Better World (Pickering-Park Mix) - ABC
Acquiesce - kd lang
I Can't Help It - Bananarama
Cure For The Itch - Linkin Park

I bought a number of new (to my collection) CD's in the last couple of weeks, but have only been able to listen to two of them and they couldn't be more different. My tastes can vary quite a bit.
The Killers "Hot Fuss" is a fine rock and roll album. Nothing groundbreaking, but solid. I love the song "Somebody Told Me".
Also bought Linda Ronstadt's latest "Hummin' to Myself". It's a collection of jazz standards. She does a terrific job though I'm sure hard core jazz purists will be critical. This is quite different than Linda's previous standards albums (What's New, Lush Life, For Sentimental Reasons) in that they were very heavily orchestrated while the arrangements on the new album are much simpler. My only complaint is that it could have a couple more upbeat numbers. But Ronstadt's voice is in fine form.

I haven't been able to stop listening to John Barrowman "Swings Cole Porter" since I picked it up a few weeks ago. I first became aware of him in the movie "De-Lovely". He does a fabulous job on the old standard "Night & Day", as a duet with Kevin Kline! Anyway his portrayal of a gay young actor under the sway of gay Porter is right on ther mark. So he adds a little something special to his interpretation of Porter's witty lyrics. Not to mention the fact that he is quite nice to look at!

I recently bought John Mellencamp's Words and Music. It's two CDs of mostly-recognizable songs. What an amazing career this guy has had.
I also got the new Linda Ronstadt CD and like it. Like you, George, I wish that she had included more uptempo material. (That was my biggest complaint about the Nelson Riddle trilogy, too.) She can really swing well when she wants to. Her voice is still remarkably strong for a woman in her late 50s, too.
Someone really needs to light a fire under her ass and get her to do some publicity, though..especially since the public has shown some interest in this kind of music via the Rod Stewart albums. Letterman and Leno are both big admirers, and I'm sure she could get booked on the morning shows.
Linda is my all-time favorite singer and although I knew she was working on a jazz standards CD, I didn't know that it had been released until I read the review in USA TODAY last week. If I didn't know about it, I'm sure most other people don't either. She hasn't done much publicity for her last few solo albums, though...just for the ones she did with Dolly and Emmylou (who I'm sure were responsible for her public appearances then).

I cannot stand Rufus. My ex-bf ruined it for me. I've tried since the break up many moons ago, but with no such luck. If you are reading this Rufus, I am sorry. I know you are a great songwriter, but you can blame it on my ex, Joe and his off-key singing along w/ his jazz hands.

The new Rufus is really good, but less catchy than Want One. He's even more of an acquired taste this time out.
The new U2 is on MTV.com. Sounds pretty good, but not exactly out of this world. I don't really like Vertigo. I expect more from them than "Yeah yeah yeah!"
I have recently gotten into Death Cab For Cutie. Very emotional and intense, in a mellow way. The same guy is in The Postal Service, too.

Dead or Alive's "Evolution" which I ordered as part of my free cd's for joining BMG. Awesome cd! Fabulous pictures of Pete Burns (with digitally enhanced collagen lips) in the booklet. The cd also includes the 2003 Metro Remix of "You Spin Me Round".
The one truly puzzling thing about Pete Burns. In the liner notes of the cd, he says: "To my wife Lynne, Thank you so much for so very long." Wife? Pete Burns is straight? W.T.F????
Is Lynne a real woman?
Nonetheless, the cd is fun.

Are there, by chance, any fans of Scottish band The Blue Nile here on the board? They released a new record, High, a short while ago, and I would like to know if it's any good. The audio feature of my media player doesn't work and I can't listen to any song samples available on the net, plus I haven't seen it in local record stores, so no chance of listening to it before buying it...
Picked up
High this week, and, yeah, I'm digging the vibe. Like a sedate after-hours cocktail party. Played it twice last night. It's my new turning-in CD (replacing Joe Henry's
Fuse, with its instrumental track "Curt Flood"). Oddly compelling in its own quiet way.
Say, anyone heard the Scissor Sisters? Not the best debut ever, but promising. They're a British (Scottish?) pop band who do a wonky cover of "Comfortably Numb," like they're channeling the Bee Gees on the dancefloor. A fun, upbeat CD ("Take Your Mama" is the highlight) - not entirely successful, but worth a spin.
Can I confess I'm digging early-80's chick rock at the moment? Just picked up Heart's greatest hits and the Jefferson Starship platinum collection (I had to HAD TO add "Jane" to my collection, since for some reason there's no soundtrack to
Wet Hot American Summer).
And, so, nobody else has been blown away by the new Elliott Smith? Ah, jeez, I walk alone again.
Speaking of solitude, right now I'm spinning the
Ravenous soundtrack. Is there a more underrated movie from the '90s? The soundtrack is dark and disturbing, but so weirdly compelling. If you've seen the movie, you'd understand.
Oh, and one more: Joseph Arthur. He's got issues with women, his father, and God. Can't get enough of his torment.

This week I bought "Love, Angel, Music, Baby" -- the solo debut from No Doubt's Gwen Stefani. It's not bad, although it closes with a duet with Outkast's Andre 3000 which features perhaps the dumbest lyric I've ever heard. The song is called "Long Way To Go" and is about racism, particularly the lack of acceptance of interracial couples. The chours includes this dubious rhyme: "It's beyond Martin Luther/upgrade computer." Upgrade computer???

#1 cd in my player is Gwen Stefani's new one. Love it...well, love most of it.
tony Moran's mix is good especially because you get the fab remix of "Easy As Life" by Deborah Cox. One of my favorite songs of the year. Plus you get Kristine W. The drawback is, the compilation didn't include his remix of "The Promise" which is superb.
The other dance compilation cd that's great is the "Dance Mix NYC Vol 6 mixed by Lil C". Very good for the gym.
This is my current Top 10 songs:
1. What You Waiting For Gwen Stefani
2. My Street - Kurt Nilsen
3. Holy Water / Rollin' - Big & Rich
4. The Wonder Of It All Kristine W
5. I Believe In You Kylie
6. You Wont Forget About Me Danii Minogue vs. Flower Power

9. Suds In The Bucket Sara Evans
10. Welcome To My Truth - Anastacia

4. The Unforgettable Fire

I bought the Fantasia album 'cause I was a comlete Idol fanatic last season and always said fantasia should quit the show and put out her own album. Well, it's out. It's very predictable, appealling to teenage girls who want to hear songs about young, unknowing love, etc. The unfortunate mix of male rappers with her soulful voice is the biggest disappointment on the album. And it's very derivative of Destiny's Child, Beyonce, etc. I'm giving it another listen this morning.
The verdict is still out on the new U2.

Based on this thread I think I'll hold off on the new U2... anyway that I-Tunes commercial sort of drives me crazy.
Currently in CD player in car:
1) Rufus Wainwright - Want Two (Not nearly as good as Want One but has listenable moments).
2) Scissor Sisters - God is this a good CD. By the way, they're not English as someone said above but from NYC. Best CD that won't be popular because it doesn't match current idiotic US radio formats.
3) Ben Folds - Compilation of his three short internet releases this year. Is there a better songwriter out there?
4) Fantasia - Guilty pleasure. Closet American Idol fan, loved every minute of her, like the CD okay so far.
5) Brian Wilson - Smile. Finally released after all these years. Loving the reconnection to Heroes and Villains.
6) Missing Persons - Best of. The best techno-pop band of the 80s bar none.
The common thread? No idea. Just like it all!

Since a few have mentioned Idols, y'all know that I'm an idol fanatic. So, Fantasia's album is my list of cd's to buy. Passing on Dian's and George's cd. I may buy Clay's Xmas cd. I probably won't buy Kelly's cd. My favorite idol is still Norwegian Idol Kurt Nilsen (the guy that sounds like Bono). I'm also diggin' Josh Gracin's new single, "Nothin' To Lose" The remixed version of Tamyra's "Raindrops Will Fall" is currently climbing the Billboard Dance music charts.
ESPN funny you should mention Missing Persons. I brought in my MP cd to work because one of my co-workers was making a 80's playlist for his IPOD and needed some Missing Persons! My favorite curretn 80's cd is Dead or Alive's "Evolution" cd. All the hits and great pictures of Pete Burns.
OK 'nuff of my ramblings.
BTW, anyone listening to Xmas music? I'm kind of interested in Vanessa's new Christmas cd.

There's something about the "Numb" video that's so compelling. Maybe it's the way the camera just sits there with Edge, or when the shot is empty save a wisp of smoke, or the bellydancer, or when Bono whispers in Edge's ear. I don't know why, but it's hot. My all-time favorite video. And I love the song too.
I had the video single on VHS, and there was a remix of the song set to images of (if I'm remembering right) the UK steel industry. The way it was edited was hypnotic. Hmm, I wonder if it's available on DVD? Must check eBay.
I'm working in a record store so I hear pieces of a lot of current music. Some I like: the Gwen Stefani, the Zutons, Hope of the States, excerpts from the new Nirvana box, those lesbian twins Tegan & Sara, Queen Latifah's vocal CD, acoustic versions of Seal hits, and one track from the latest Mos Def that I can't get enough of - a really steamy, bluesy track called "Blue Black Jack."
On the other hand, the new R.Kelly is boring and endless, sounding like one song stretched over an hour. One spin of Hilary Duff was enough to make me hate her music. I never want to hear Bowling for Soup again. And I don't get the appeal of Joss Stone.
And I like Ray Charles, but having to hear the
Ray soundtrack every day is getting annoying.

I recently bought Chris Isaac's new Christmas CD and have enjoyed listening to it. It has a light-hearted country bent, with a few good originals (Christmas Without You). A few of my Christmas favorites (titles escape me) are Judy Collins, the Phil Spector groups CD, Johnny Mathis' first X Mas album, Manhattan Transfer, Dan Fogelberg, Mel Torme and Etta James, which I didn't like when I first heard it- it's very jazzy- her vocals could have been better on a few songs, but the music is good. Has anyone bought the Bare Naked Christmas CD? I don't know their stuff, but what little I've heard has made me smile- not sure I'd like it enough to buy it.
