A friend just gave me Kelly Calrkson's "Breakaway" cd. And I must say I am very impressed. She sounds totally different. What a departure form her first cd. Definitely a "harder" sounding cd than her first album. Very Avril like...but better IMHO. "Breakaway" shocked me as being a Kelly song and the folow-up "Since You've Been Gone" pop-rocks even harder. Very few ballads and even the ballads are more in the Evanesence style. Check it out.

The Queen Latifah CD is a big yawner. Well, not really, but it's not surprising to those who've seen Living Out Loud and know the Queen can do the torch song thing.
And, yeah, the Kelly Clarkson CD ain't as bad as could be. It's definitely more listenable than the new albums from Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan. Talk about EEK!

The new Warren Zevon tribute CD is very good. Nobody performs Zevon songs like the late Zevon himself, but artists like Jacskon Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Yorn, Bob Dylan, Jill Sobule, The Wallflowers, Don Henley and surprisingly, Adam Sandler cover Zevon's stuff very well. A very nice and fitting tribute!

Actually there have been quite a few of the Idols CDs that have popped out of the works from RCA the past 4-5 weeks.
Clay Aiken's Merry Christmas With Love: Some nice songs- these style tunes really suit his voice, which I like. A nice version of Mary Did You Know, Don't Save it All For Christmas Day.
Fantasia's "Free Yourself"- I am neither a good or fair criti of this CD, since I am not a huge straight up R&B fan, which this album is true to... my main critique is that there are several tracks that are repeats from singles or performances from Idol, which Kelly, Clay and Ruben did not have. She has versions of Summertime and You Were Always on My Mind which don't flow with the rest of the album. I think her recorded voice is less remarkable than her flavorful live performances. I think concert is the best way to appreciate her.
Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway- I have to agree with Mariner Duck Boy that this album definitely has an Avril vibe- but I think that she has a bit of Sarah MacLachlan in her voice as well- I think her album is a mix of the two. I wish there were at least one true ballad on the album, which I think shows her voice- but its nice to hear a true voice to the lesser evils of weaker voices to similar music (Duff, Lohan, etc)
Diana Degarmo's "Blue Skies"- This really threw me for a loop, because they did not even come close to advertising this release or letting people know it was arriving. Some nice tracks showing the power of her voice, but lacking maturity and some depth in areas, which we saw on the show. Tracks worth listening to: Dreams, Emotional (I think the highlight), Go on and Cry (love the second half- but would have loved to hear Jennifer Hudson or Kelly Clarkson sing it). I think she has a great and talented voice but needs to grow into it- an acceptable album.

As for the new U2, after a few listens, I'm not loving it. It's not terrible by any means, but it is a letdown after \"All That You Can't Leave Behind\"
I have to agree -- I bought it a week ago and listened to it once. Then (having put it onto the iPod) I listened to it on my commute to and from work today, and only a couple of songs have really caught on with me. I then listened to "All That You Can't..." and what a difference.
I'm getting more and more into the Gwen Stefani CD, particularly the infectious song "Bubble Pop Electric" for some reason.

Since I am in a holiday mood this afternoon writing out Christmas cards, it just seemed appropriate to play some holiday music. Just shuffling the music of these various CDs.
1)Now That's What I call Christmas.
(36 classic tunes from various artists past
and present)
2) Fresh Aire Christmas (Mannheim Steamroller)
3) Christmas Voices & Bells (The Boys Choir of
Vienna)
4) The Carols of Christmas (Windham Hill)
5) White Christmas (Boston Pops Orchestra)

I just bought the new Switchfoot album "The Beautiful Letdown"...it's a good album. It's similar to something from Vertical Horizon. Even though their roots are apparently Christian-based, I don't get a big religious vibe from the music, which is perfectly fine with me...

How was Keane? I like a lot of their songs, but they don't seem to have the same intensity of the other bands.

Since I bought this
case for my iPod and it's blue (and for other reasons I won't go into) I played all the songs on my iPod that started with the word "Blue" or a derivative...
Blue (Da Ba Dee) - Eiffel 65
Blue (Is The Colour Of Pain) - Caron Wheeler
Blue Angel - Roy Orbison
Blue Bayou - Roy Orbison
Blue Jean - David Bowie
Blue Light - Prince and the New Power Generation
Blue Monday - New Order
Blue Mood - Swing Out Sister
Blue Notes - Ultra Nate
Blue Savannah - Erasure
Blue Suede Shoes - Elvis Presley
Bluer Than Midnight - The The
Blues From A Gun - Sugar Ray
Blues Happy - Arrested Development
Oddly enough, apparently I have no versions of "Blue Christmas" on any of my Christmas CDs! Hmmm. wink

Awesome song dedicated to Mark Bingham (Tuesday Morning, my song of the year) and what should be the new gay anthem, I AM A GIANT. Definite CD of the year honors IMHO....

It's from their 2003 album "In the Pursuit of Leisure" (as is the Joe Jackson remake "Is She Really Going Out With Him?") which was a flop, with good reason. I didn't listen to it very much compared to their previous two.

I discovered country/rock singer Tift Merritt a couple of months ago, and she's become one of my favorites. Granted, I've only heard one of her two albums so far, but it's a real keeper.
Merritt has a terrific voice - a little like Dusty Springfield's, only not quite as husky - and her songwriting is wonderfully evocative. She's my second-favorite singer/songwriter, behind Bonnie Raitt.
I predict that we'll be hearing from Merritt for a long time - and I can hardly wait.

Yup, it's her second album. My dad bought both albums and I gave them a listen; it's better than most bland adult contemporary stuff. You are obviously not a big fan, so stay away from the CD+DVD combo if you can...typical RIAA con job/cash-in.

After waiting weeks for it's arrival, my copy of Kurt Nilsen's "A Part Of Me" cd finally arrived. Kurt is the Norwegian Idol who also won World Idol. He actually looks sort of cute in some of the photos and not so Hobbit like. But the voice remains amazing.
His second album is much more mellow and acoustic than his debut, "I". My only complaint is that the songs are really short and he only has a total of 10 songs on the cd.
I only wish more people had exposure to Kurt's music.
I'm also listening to Keane's "Hopes and Fears" cd.

I am re-enjoying the Evanescence: Fallen CD... My Immortal is awesome and it touches me...
Also really enjoying Kelly Clarkson's new album Breakaway. Just nice to hear what her sound really is after such a total hodge-podge of sounds on the first album (though I liked it too).
I am also listening to the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack. Emmy Rossum has a nice voice, but the rest is very mediocre... but I just love the music LOL
I need to check out Kurt Nilsen's new album- smooth, great voice. Too bad he isnt a pretty boy, he'd be selling out world round.
I am also finding myself enjoying some old Motown tunes...
