My brother's birthday is coming up. When we were young 'uns, we were pop music fiends, and used to spend our allowance and gift money on 7" singles and K-Tel albums. I'm making him a few CD versions of some of the K-Tel albums we grew up listening to a lot. Not surprisingly, I've made an extra copy for myself, and I'm enjoying reliving my youth with them.
Robert John - "Sad Eyes"
Maxine Nightingale - "Lead Me On"
Elton John - "Mama Can't Buy You Love"
ABBA - "Does Your Mother Know"
Foreigner - "Blue Morning Blue Day"
Cheap Trick - "I Want You to Want Me"
Peter Frampton - "I Can't Stand It No More"
M - "Pop Muzik"
David Naughton - "Makin' It"
Bonnie Pointer - "Heaven Must Have Sent You"
Dr. Hook - "When You're in Love With a Beautiful Woman"
Suzi Quatro & Chris Norman - "Stumblin' In"
Peaches & Herb - "Reunited"
Atlanta Rhythm Section - "Do It or Die"
Earth Wind & Fire - "Boogie Wonderland"
McFadden & Whitehead - "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now"
Blondie - "Call Me"
Pat Benatar - "Heartbreaker"
Journey - "Any Way You Want It"
Little River Band - "Cool Change"
Cliff Richard - "We Don't Talk Anymore"
Jefferson Starship - "Jane"
Knack - "My Sharona"
Brothers Johnson - "Stomp!"
Spinners - "Working My Way Back to You"
Kool & the Gang - "Too Hot"
Jimmy Ruffin - "Hold On to My Love"
Shalamar - "Second Time Around"
Whispers - "And the Beat Goes On"
Andy Gibb - "Desire"
Charlie Dore - "Pilot of the Airwaves"

I've been listening to a MashUps CD Mariner Duck Boy burned for me. I LOVE using it to work out to.
I think my two favorites are the Marilyn Monroe v. Marilyn Manson, \"Diamonds are Dead\" & the Green Day v. Oasis v. Queen, \"Boulevard of Broken Songs.\"
I still can't thank MDB enough for that CD!!
I've got one too! He's two-timing me!
I was reading a music article at Philly.com which mentioned a particular producer named DJ Diplo, who worked on a remix of Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" -- and there was a link to
this website, which has it and other mixes as free downloads. You and MDB and others may want to check it out.

Lexington - what an awesome idea for a birthday gift. Inspired!
My fondest K-Tel memory is of an album (was it called Dynamite? Can't remember) which included "The night Chicago died" by Paper Lace, and an absolutely nutty pop version of "The Lord's prayer" by Sister Janet Mead (she was a real nun!).
And I'll give twenty bucks to anyone here who can find me a copy of the disco version of the Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman theme as recorded by a group called The Deadly Nightshade.

I'm listening and burning a mostly Dusty Springfield CD from the early sixties(mostly). Dusty is the best White fenale soul singer from the sixties, better, but different, from Janis. Many of her songs are sex is ok even if we aren't deeply in love songs, which is fairly radical for that era. Also included are some chestnuts from Lesley Gore, The Chiffons, and Connie Francis. Dusty and Lesley identified as lesbians - as for the others, who knows? I'd be happy to send along copies to those who might be interested.

OMG, today I heard the latest ghastly cover of an 80's pop chestnut. Some diva-be was flatly singing Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over," which has got to be the most bullshit remake since Jessica Simpson's wretched do-over of John C.M.' "Jack and Diane." WTF is going on in pop music nowadays?
Anyway, lately I've been spinning the latest Kings of Leon disc Aha Shake Heartbreak. No classic (at least not yet), but good raw instrumentation and purely untrained vocals.
Lexington
Jul 16 2005, 10:05 PM
I'm assuming you heard the Sixpence None the Richer version of "Don't Dream It's Over", which managed to be worse than their cover of "There (S)he Goes".
A friend of mine was listening to Hillary Duff's CD METAMORPHISIS a few days ago when I came over. I was stunned by the vocals. They were ProTooled until they almost didn't sound human - think the robotic part of Cher's "Believe". But not as gimmick - this was presumably passed off as regular singing. I was shocked - not that they ProTooled Hilary Duff's voice (no surprise there), but that they didn't even bother to try to hide the fact.
Was Les(ley) a les(bian)? I didn't know. I have her greatest hits CD and really like it. Yes, even "Sunshine Lollipops and Rainbows".
Going way back to the very first post in this thread, I heard Moby's latest album Hotel. Enh. Not bad by any stretch, but it never engaged me once. I kept forgetting it was on. I guess it makes for pleaseant aural wallpaper, but that's rather faint praise.

Lesley was appearing at Elaine Noble's, a lesbian state senator in MA, fundraisers in the late 70's/ early eighties with her partner. Sunshine Lollipops, You Don't Own Me, Maybe I know, She's a Fool and It's My Party are my favorites, which I've put on the CD.

I love this one!
And whenever I hear the name Carol Channing, all I think about is the phrase "Corn? When did I eat corn?" Sorry, it was a classic running joke on the old Datalounge boards (before they went to the crappy new format.)
ELO rocks. Every now & then I fire up an old ELO tune just to put me in a good mood.
When I was in claims, I got into a big argument with an adjuster because he thought instead of singing "E-Evil Woman" they were singing "Medieval Woman". He was so insistant on the lyrics that he said he was going to go home that evening and listen to the lyrics again. The next day, he came into work with his head down, walked up to me and all he said was "You were right".
Nice list, Jim.

I was a young 'un when that song came out, and I thought the chorus was "He is a woman." Not sure what I thought the song was about - a drag queen, maybe?
Great. I gave the song a listen. Now I can't get it out of my head. No, I can't get it out of my head.

A couple of new CDs I got this summer that I like:
The new Coldplay is quite good though not as good as their last release.
Foo Fighters' In Your Honor is a terrific double disc, one a rock disc and the other acoustic. Both hold up really well but I've really anjoyed the acoustic one a tad more.
Finally Carly Simon's Moonlight Serenade is a wonderful collection of standards. After Linda Ronstadt, she does the best job of contemporary singers who've tackled standards.

Aug 5 2005, 08:04 AM
Speaking of standards ... right this second, I'm listening to Janis Joplin singing "Summertime."
The Foo Fighters are one of those great bands that I really respect in terms of their musicianship and I always like whatever single they have out, but I'm never compelled to actually own their cds. I'm sure I'd like them if I did, but for some reason I just enjoy them from afar.

Also got a pre-release of the Fray CD, but let's not whip that dead horse anymore.

I have a new obsession with Michael Buble. I'm convinced he's the Frank Sinatra of the modern era. His duet with Nelly Furtado, "Quando, Quando, Quando", is beautiful, as his his cover of Sinatra's "The Way You Look Tonight". I feel like he needs more original music though- a lot of his songs are covers of Frank Sinatra songs...
