I thought the same thing about this guy once i bought the CD. The first song sounds like Jimmy Ray Vaughn and the rest sucks in my humble opinion. I felt like such a sucker buying the CD. The same happened when I bought a Stained CD.

In my CD player is Guero (sp) by Beck. Good music if you like his style and he has more Latin influence on this CD.

I picked up Kanye West's Late Registration yesterday, and it's every bit as great as all the reviews have been saying. It's so rich and textured, and just keeps unfurling with each listen. Early contender for album of the year already!

I'm also really enamoured of the new Depeche Mode single, "Precious." At first, it struck me as a half-hearted rewrite of "Enjoy the silence," but it's grown exponentially with each listen (much like New Order's "Waiting for the sirens' call" did for me a few months back).

But today, I'm listening to Big Star's "The ballad of El Goodo" on a loop. Apparently, Alex Chilton is listed as missing amongst the devastation on New Orleans. And on the eve of the release of the first new Big Star album in nearly 30 years. sad.gif

I hope he's found okay.

Good catch. Yeah, I saw the movie today--I thought the movie as a whole was so-so, but the scenes during which the Nyro songs were played were really powerful.

Is anyone watching the Shelter From the Storm (the multiple network telethon)? U2 just performed "One" with Mary J. Blige, and the R&B reworking of the tune was quite good.

I can't understand a word of Spanish, but I'm loving the reggaeton remix to Shakira's new song "La Tortura".

I've never been able to listen to the NIN version of "Hurt" after hearing Johnny Cash's version. Trent Reznor wrote a great song, but Cash owns it now.

For some reason, I didn't get the full-length Fray CD until last Tuesday. And I didn't listen to it until today (busy busy busy). While the songs are very good, I think they've focused exclusively on one aspect of the band, and ignored others.

Then I put on "Into Battle With the Art of Noise" and bounced around like a moron the rest of the day.

Think the same could be said about Rusty Cage, that song was perfect for him also. I love Cash.

I bought Sheryl Crow's Wildflower last night. It's very different from her previous work. Mid-tempo and pensive, alot of strings. The single, "Good is Good," I think is very representative of almost the entire album. I wasn't nuts about it at first, but the more I listen, the more I like it. I do miss the fun-loving, folky rock side of her on this album. The cd isn't as much of a big love note to Lance Armstrong as people made it out to be, though. You can tell Sheryl's maturing and her heart is in a different place now than the "All I Wanna Do" days, but it's much more universal than personal in feel.

Favorite songs right now are "Good is Good," "I Know Why," "Live it Up," and I absolutely love "Always On Your Side."

PS - Jim, in case you hadn't heard, Alex Chilton is fine.

They posted the news on my Bangles board, because Michael Steele (former bassist) is friendly with him and admires his work. The Bangles did a cover of "September Gurls" back in the day and still performed it up until Michael left the band a few months ago.

I would equate listening to anything Johnny Cash ever sang to listening to nails against a chalkboard.I guess I'm just jealous because I haven't found a way to turn "my" off-key singing into a gold mine and I am just too old for NIN!

Here are ten songs on my curent playlist.

- "Perfection" by Dannii Minogue. The song samples Vicki Sue Robinson's "Turn The Beat Around"

- "Inside Out" by Ellie Lawson. The song uses Madonna's "Time Stood Still" as the base.

- "No More Cloudy Days" - The Eagles

- "Easy Ride (Tracey Young remix)" - Madonna

- "Sixteen Tons of Haarware" - Bodies Without Organs

- "What Else is There?" - Royksopp

- "Breathe Me (Mylo Remix) - Sia

- "Mesmerized (Freemason's Mix) - Faith Evans

- "Heaven" - Ayumi Hamasaki - J-Pop Queen releases her annual Fall/Winter ballad

- "Panic" - Venke Knutson

"Angel Milk," by Telepopmusik, a French group that features Angela McCluskey in several of the songs. Lots of electronic effects and almost decadent at times, but some nice melodies and lyrics. That and a 3-CD reissue of Charles Trenet's oeuvre have me on a French kick right now.

Nice to see "Little Fluffy Clouds" is still getting some play. I always liked the voice-over of the woman bemoaning the loss of spectacular sunsets in her childlike way.

Melissa Ethridge's Greatest Hits. Bought it yesterday.

Love the song "I Run For Life". Brings tears to my eyes, when I think of the family members lost to Breast Cancer.

I like the new Nada Surf. Liked the last one a bit more, I think, but this one's good, too.

I've been asked to create music for the performance of an African play geared towards children. That means someone somewhere said, "Who should I contact about music for a child-specific African play? How about that middle-aged white gay guy?" Found some good stuff, especially "The Rough Guide to African Music for Children". Just trying to assemble it into a well-flowing collection now.

After some random browsing, I bought on iTunes an album called "Starfish" by The Church. It's amazing--lush music, great lyrics. And it's held up surprisingly well for a late-80s rock album.

On a totally different note, madonna.com is playing a snippet of her new song on the front page. It's definitely an improvement from her American Life rapping. Giorgio Morodor is a bit before my time, but I'm guessing this is what he'd sound like if he wrote a dance song today.

I've taken it back old school and dug out some of my favorite older stuff.

Ok guys the two CD's I am going to recommend are so far from the mainstream pop it is not funny. I have been listening to these two CD's for the last month. Both recordings haunt me,and I love them. The first recording is Surjan Stevens...Greetings From Michigan...This is a very electic record, sometimes it sounds like a very comtempory pop records and the next minute it seems like a tone poem. Excellent recording. The second CD is Antony and the The Johnsons. A CD you will either love or hate. This is a nice collection of art songs. He talks about growing up to be a beautiful woman, and the next song deals with breast amputation. I can't get both of the CD's out of my head.

Madonna's song samples the song "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" by Abba. It's a slightly different sound than Giorgio Moroder...isn't he still working? I wonder how he'd sound today, actually.

Speaking of Madonna, I made a dance cd for a friend this weekend and Diva's and wannabe diva's were well represented!

Tracks inlcuded:

"Easy Ride (Tracy Young Mix)" - Madonna (in prep. for "Hung Up")

"Walk On By (S&F Club Mix)" - Cyndi Lauper

"Night Of My Life" Remix - Barbra Streisand. Welcome back La Streisand to the dance floor!

"Mesmerized (Freemason's Mix) - Faith Evans

"Crazy" All Mixes - The Diva Delicious Andy Bell

"Avalon (Jacque LuCont Mix") - Juliet

"Wonderful Life" / "Come To Me" - Tina Cousins

"Perfection" - Danii Minogue

"Someday (I Will Understand) (Leama & Moor Remix)" - Britney Spears Federline

I also have a couple of fab mash-up songs that I am listening to:

"Africans, Diamonds and Benjamins" - Shirley Bassey/Kanye West/Toto

"Caryfornication" - Mariah & Red Hot Chili Peppers

and

"Rhinestone" - "Rhinestone Cowboy" mashed with some dance song

blkbear - on your recommendation I bought Greetings From Michigan (Surjan Stevens). I literally picked it up a few times previously at the local Tower Records but never listened to the music until recently. It's now part of my rotation.

I've also been listening to the Perishers...not even sure how I would classify their music but I like it.

On two completely unrelated notes, the new Black Rebel Motorcyle Club is amazing, and the snippets of the new Madonna i've heard are great.

We're gonna see Renee Fleming perform in Richard Strauss' Daphne next week, so I went out and bought the CD. It's wonderful. Beautiful music -- among Strauss's best.

Also Dolly Parton's Those Were the Days -- I LOVE Dolly Parton. Covers a bunch of songs from the 60s and 70s. On one she sings a duet with my bf Keith Urban.

And a while back I finally picked up the remastered Fleetwood Mac Rumours (probably my fave album of all time). If you still have the CD when it first came out, you must discard and get this one. The sound is amazing. And best yet -- the great Stevie Nicks song Silver Springs makes its way onto the disk -- her voice back in 1977 was a marvel. (I dunno why it never made it on the original album -- either they ran out of space on the LP or the band felt she already have enough songs there.)

Franz Ferdinand you could have it so much better. I just got it, so I'm still on the first couple of go arounds.

I'm definetly into it. Some of the tracks remind me of The Monkees - in a good way. It's 80's, it's poppy and it's very danceable.

Though not normally a fan - A guest brought aboard one of Ricky Martins new CD's last week; and I have to admit it is pretty good - far better than I would have expected.

Soulful, with some Reggae and Eastern Influences, definitely not contrived or copycat - this might be the best thing he has done in years.

The first single - "I Don't Care" adds guest vocals from Fat Joe and Amerie . "I Am" is a great track, that's sensual but not over the top. Simple beat, very un-Ricky Martin.

Overall a pleasantly surprising album.

Rob

PS - Ah, back in the USA...
Gaga4Gaby
I have the new Ricky Martin cd. He's trying very hard to toughen up his image ... the traditional latin influences to his pop music have been left behind in favor of a more reggaeton edge, which makes sense because I think Ricky spends alot of time in Miami. It works well, although I find it a bit contrived. Ricky is still sort of cheesy and I don't buy him as heterosexual for one nanosecond.

What I'm really into, though, is Hot Fuss by The Killers. That's just a damn fine purchase. I've been listening to it all weekend.
