A's Sign Frank Thomas to Upgrade Offense By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Free agent slugger Frank Thomas agreed to a one-year contract with Oakland, giving the Athletics the big bat they've been searching for in the middle of their lineup.

Best of luck to the Big Hurt! He gave us 15 years of great baseball.

This is no big addition to the A's. Thomas will be on the IR more than he plays. Oakland A's make such bad decisions despite the stellar rep of Beane.

Why is this a bad decision? It's a risk, but a small one -- it's a one-year deal for $500,000. If he stays healthy and produces, he'll earn $2.6 million more through incentives.

I thought it was a weird acquisition from Beane too. (And I thought it was only the Giants who acquired the old guys!)
The A's is promoting Thomas has their big bat paired with Eric Chavez. So even though it's a small risk, does sound like they have big hopes for him. I personally don't think it's going to pan out to much. Who knows, maybe I'll be surprised.

As said above, it's low risk (omg, JIP and I agree)... FT hit 12 HR in 34 games last year. Even if he plays 100 and hits 20 homers, that's very much in line with a useful part of a Beane-designed team: Power + walks from the offense.

We A's fans have high hopes for FT, but are well aware of his injury history.
It's really a no lose situation as 500k is nothing today for someone of FT's potential.
Most A's fans are guessing we will get him for 80-100 games. This is probably the best we can hope for, along with some pop.
Regardless, our pitching is solid so if it holds up, we may not need FT to be the difference maker.
Anyway , I like our chances this year, as long as our key guys can avoid extended stays on the DL. (FT excepted)

You guys are getting pop in the deal? How much? What kind--Coke or Pepsi?

I always liked Frank Thomas but I dont know if he will fit in with the team.
His best years are far behind him now...and how knows maybe he will surprise the critics out there.
I wish him the best. even though the Yankees are going to kick there ass!!!

Frankie is a good Aub. Though, I don't know if he meshes with any team.

Nothing against Bo, but FT was the best hitter to ever come out of Auburn. I fear that injuries have practically ended his usefulness to any MLB team, and won't be surprised if this is his last year.

Own us, quite possibly? Steinbrenner can buy anything he wants, including a championship.
