Why would the phrase "off the hook" be used? There was NO evidence of homophobia at all. If anything, the article seemed to suggest that the Yankees believed this guy was a thief. Believe it or not, some gay people are fired for legitimate reasons. However, once again, since it has to do with the Yankees, people like to jump to their own conclusions.
