I am getting the 40G Ipod on Friday, my sweetie bought it for me as a V-day/8th anniversary present. He had it engraved on the back, but won't tell me what it says.
I feel a little behind the times just getting one now. Better late than never. This will make my commute a thousand times more bearable.

OK, I have a question for fellow iPod users:
Is there a fast, easy way to copy the contents of an iPod onto a new computer?
I ask because a friend bought an iPod. I synched it with my iTunes, but now if he wants to download music onto his computer and synch it to his iPod it will overwrite everything I've put on there for him.
I started to burn CD's to then import onto his machine, but with over 2,000 songs (most of it from my own CD collection) it would take about 100 CD's to do it - and the burning doesn't transfer over titles, artist name, etc - I'd have to enter it all manually!

Make sure he sets his ipod to manual sync mode (under preferences). Otherwise, if it's on automatic, like you said, everything will be wiped out.
I use Anapod explorer to copy songs from my ipod to my desktop music folder (especially tunes purchased from itunes). You can drag & drop files to/from Anapod which makes it nice with the Windows operating system.

Munson and Duck - I was wondering about that too (I just got the 20 GB) B/4 I get rid of this old computer, I'll put all the songs on the pod, then when I get my new computer, which will have zero songs on it, and plug in my ipod, it will erase all the songs on the ipod ?

Store your entire music library in MP3 format on CD or DVD, regardless, if it matters.
iPods are great. They come in pastel colors and are overpriced. Every self-respecting gay man should have one.
Seriously, my only real issue with the iPod is that I do not need one. I could justify one. However Apple Computer has not figured out how to build it with a stock AA battery compartment yet. That and the lack of machined 7000 series anodized aluminum cases. But then I ask too much for a mere several hundred dollars.

Maybe you guys can help me with an ipod question I have. I've read various places where you can do things like "Check out Nicole Kidman's playlist," etc. etc. - Is this something available to the public?
Thanks in advance!

I don't believe you can do this on an iPod, but you can in their iTunes Music Store. If you download iTunes and go to the Music Store homepage, you will find celebrity playlists and the option to buy those songs. Most of the time the celebs will tell you why they picked so and so song. Cool feature, I like seeing what songs different artists like and are influenced by. Some are quite surprising. BTW, it's free to download and you don't have to buy anything if you don't want to.

Get the iPod with the largest memory and longest run time. Get a color that won't show dirt or wear as much. Get the bigger one because larger buttons are easier to use. Do not get the color screen. Color takes more memory and taxes the processor more. It always does. Color is a lot more expensive.
Get the Altec Lansing tube shaped portable stereo. It sounds really good and acts like a docking station for your pod. I believe you can also run your computer into the boombox also. I think Comp USA and the Apple store have it priced at $250 dollars.
Does the Nano plug ito the standard docking station? I cannot use headphones at work. So an iPod is kind of a farce. I can just buy a harddrive and USBe it on my work computer.
Wait a year before buying the Nano nano..

The Nano just looks amazingly cool. It's so thin and still has that color screen and scroll wheel. I think it is so much better than the iPod shuffle I was thinking of getting. Plus it's uses flash memory so it is better to use if you are jogging or working out. Damn Apple for making me their bitch! I think I'm gonna have to shell out the 2 hundred bucks to get one.

I hardly use the portable MP3 stuff I have. I tried to join the U2 hipsters that I see on the TV screens. However, my hands and head didn't adjust to the players I tried out.
But then I don't do cell phones and think people who write and post w/ text messaging lingo are f**king morons.
I am such an anachronism.

Anybody have the Bose SoundDock for their iPod? I've only seen it in stores - don't know much about it. It sure would be nice to get rid of my clunky old stereo and have something nice and small that would fit on an end table or kitchen counter.
Erik G
Sep 10 2005, 05:30 PM
I checked out all the set-ups they had at the Apple store when my friend drug me out to the Maul of America.
The BOSE was okay. But the only one that sounded good and full-range with some thump was the $250 portable stereo. The size is good and the design looks tight. Altec Lansing made the iSub and speakers for Apple's line of computers if I am not mistaken.
I would actually buy the $250 portable and a full-size iPod with a wheel when it comes out. I may need to drastically downsize my computers and stereo's to a portable size.
Hey I am trying to join the latest trend. I am just a bad cunsumer.

AAAAAAAAACK! My iPod has apparently died! It won't start playing, nothing is displaying on the screen, no sound, it doesn't do anything when I put it in the charger, it doesn't do anything when I plugged it into the PC. Nothing. I bought it at the end of July last year so I'm past the one-year warranty. I can't believe this. There's a support page at Apple.com that lists troubleshooting tips and I clicked on two different ones I get an error box saying "The document contains no data." It was working fine until today. I can't imagine what's wrong. The battery can't suddenly just die like that, can it?

Take it into the Apple store. I bet they'd look at it even with the warranty gone. You may just have to replace the battery or something.

Sep 13 2005, 09:31 PM
if you got the apple care, it would've extended the warranty to three years.
i think the battery costs 100 bucks.

My iPod died about 4 months ago, so I totally sympathize. Mine was about 3 years old though so for yours to die after just over a year is awful. There was a lawsuit for anyone who owned a 3rd generation iPod or older though. You can get a battery replacement or $50 gift card from the Apple store.
Here is a link for anyone interested. If your battery is dead you can buy a new one
here. Of course you would have to replace it yourself or pay for someone else to do it.

Well, reports of my iPod's demise may have been premature. Oh, these rumormongers. wink I went back to the Apple website and the support page I mentioned above is working again. After checking the hold switch and trying to charge the battery (both of which I had done) the next sugguestion was to re-set the iPod, so I did. It turned on and gave me the main menu, except the battery indicator showed it to be completely empty so now I'm recharging it. Assuming the battery isn't somehow completely unusable now I suppose what happened is that the last time I used it I left it on. We'll see.
I don't have an Apple store that's very close (unless someone can drive me) so hopefully I won't have to take it in to try and get service.

One of the things they're now offering for sale on iTunes is downloads of episodes of Desperate Housewives. I'm sorry but the video capability is a waste for me.
What does interest me is that they're claiming that the new iPod has up to 20 hours of battery life. And a 60GB iPod holds about 15,000 songs. I currently have less than 8,000 on my 40GB iPod (which is said to hold about 10,000). Maybe I should see about a trade-in.

I believe the warranty on iPods is one year. Apple should fix it for you.
Go to an apple store or check out apple.com.

Read the manual about resetting it. I had the same problem...I think you hold down the main button for 10 seconds and wait for the apple to display or something along those lines.

Yes, try re-setting it first. That's what I did and mine started working again.
Re-set instructions:
To reset an iPod with a Click Wheel, including:
* iPod mini
* iPod mini (Second Generation)
* iPod with color display (iPod photo)
* iPod (Click Wheel)
* iPod nano
1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
To reset iPod, iPod (scroll wheel), iPod (touch wheel), and iPod (dock connector)
1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2. Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
If you are still unable to reset your iPod, use only one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Menu button.
When you reset iPod all your music and files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost. Date and time is preserved (unless the iPod reset itself because it had no power and then was reconnected to power). Other customized settings, such as Bookmarks, On-The-Go Playlists, Shuffle, Backlight timer, and so forth are preserved from the last time the hard drive turned on.

Ok, so I finally purchased my ipod to keep up with all you guys at the gym. Overall I do like it but I have a few comments/questions about it, maybe someone can help me.
1. Is it me or are the "controls" kinda hard to operate. Moving the cursor up and down/ or trying to adjust the volume is very "touchy". Really hard to easily do, why isnt there just a volume control that you select up and down?
2. Can I arrange my music in categories or arrange the list of play? Do I do that from plugging it up to my computer?
3. How exactly can I send music from my computer that I have downloaded from my cd's to my ipod?
I hope this doesnt sound too stupid but there was not much to the instructions and I am not much of a computer "tech".
thanks in advance
if it makes any difference I purchased a IPOD nano 4kg

1. Yes, they are, especially when wearing gloves. And it sucks when you have a thousand songs and want to hear a song from the bottom of the alphabet. The newer versions jump by letter when you scroll fast. I need me one of those (mine's all full and my boyf's holds 10,000 songs. Me want!).
2. You can do that on your iTunes, then sync it to your 'Pod.
3. "Sync"/"Update" under the File Menu in iTunes.

In your iTunes, create a new folder and transfer the songs you want to share by dragging them from your list to the new one. You won't lose them from yours - they'll just be duplicated. Then Update/Sync the new 'Pod, which will be given the same name as the folder.
I think.
You can do this, but the person receiving the gift won't be able to add his/her own songs to it without erasing the ones you put on it. A way around this is if the gift recipient burns these songs first onto CD, then erases the 'Pod, then transfers the songs on the CD to his/her iTunes, then uploads/syncs again. That's how I'd do it. But he/she would need blank discs and a burner, of course.
Hope this helps.

I'd suggest you just burn a disc yourself and include it with the iPod. Then your friend can just copy the songs from the disc into his/her iTunes.
