I hear what you're saying, Joe, and I agree with you in general. But in terms of Josh, (1) I think the single's success has more to do with airplay than sales, actually, and (2) if American Idol wants you to believe in the validity of their product and the talent they produce, Simon should not be claiming no good country singers have been on his stage when the person who made the final four of their second season is almost atop the country charts with his latest effort. Even if he does think Josh is no good, what does it say about American Idol if that's true? Hence, I stand by my assessment that Cowell's comment was irresponsible.

But Simon's all about feeding the suceptible teens opinions on the latest batch of contestants ... every season's talent far outdoes the last, every season he steps on the previous year's contestants in order to boost the current crop up another notch.

I agree with you about everyone on AI - none of them would be recording music without the show, not even Josh.

For what it's worth, Josh Gracin took part in a group concert of country newcomers under the aegis of local country station KZLA. He performed five songs and had the crowd eating out of his hand. It was obvious he was doing his own singing and was doing it live. He's not my cup of tea--prefer my country a bit more traditional or bluegrass--but he clearly has the pipes.

Josh was nominated as Top New Artist for the 2005 Academy of Country Music Awards. Seeing as though he's against Gretchen Wilson and Big and Rich, his chances aren't very good, but it's definitely a pretty big accomplishment...

Is Gretchen Wilson the "redneck woman" lady? I can't imagine anyone beating her for the award, but that's cool news about the nomination for Josh.

Gretchen Wilson is a jauggernaut and I don't think anyone's going to beat her. Big & Rich would have the best shot, but she's been cleaning up the awards this past year.

Big & Rich are too controversial within the c&w community to win a lot of awards at this point--the rapping cowboy, the whole 'Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy' video brouhaha.

Well, Gretchen & B&R are part of Nashville's Musik Mafia. I didn't care for "Redneck Woman" but I do like her other songs. Big & Rich are fun. I always crank up "Rollin'" whenever I hear it. And I love B&R's "Holy Water"
