The problem with " Leatherheads" is that for a romantic comedy there is no chemistry between any of the leads- John Krasinnski does looks great in all those period costumes.

There Will Be Blood (3/5)
Wherein P.T. Barnu...excuse me, Anderson foregoes trying to be Robert Altman (to whom the film is dedicated) and decides to be Stanley Kubrick instead (complete with a measured and wordless intro, a rivetingly unhinged main performance, an almost unbearably austere soundtrack, and an awesomely funny puchline in the final frames). If only he'd try to be himself for once. Perhaps there will be blood in one of his films someday, but not here. No, once again the hearts of his ciphers (to call them "characters" would imply they have more dimension than he is apparently capable of mustering) pump nothing but cliche and contempt. Very pretty to look at, though, and fascinating as an exercise, but ultimately another disappointment.

Just saw this cute film called Coffee Date, starring uber hottie Wilson Cruz. Basically its about a straight guy who is surprised to find that his blind internet date he meets for a coffee date is in fact a gay latino man. The whole movie is then about the straight guy trying to convince everyone else that he's really not gay. Of course there are some interesting twists in the movie but don't want to give it away. Just happened to be browsing through Logo On Demand and saw the movie there.
P.S...Wilson Cruz' body is THE TRUTH!!!
I love this movie! I have become the biggest Wilson Cruz groupie since watching the movie. His mouth, the Puerto Rican flag tattooed on his arm, the way he walks, and he's lovely.
I also saw Shelter. A really cute movie. It made me want to find a guy. It's cute. And Trevor Wright is cute. I loved Zach's best friend in the movie. He was hilarious, and reminded me of one of my friends.

Went to see the English-language re-release of Persepolis. While some of the voices are the same (Chiara Mastroiani and Catherine Deneuve), they've added the likes of Sean Penn, Gena Rowlands and Iggy Pop. In the end I think I prefer the original French version, although it's more difficult to appreciate the wonderful animation while you're busy reading the subtitles.

" The Journey of Jared Price" from Netflix. Mildly interesting movie, actually kind of soft porn really.

Not too bad of a love story gay movie. Acting was fairly good. Cute main lead, and cute hot older daddy type guy, kinda hairy and kinda looked alot like a younger George Clooney.

Football Undercover. A documentary about an amateur German women's soccer team that goes to Tehran to play an Iranian women's soccer team. Interesting, and often sweet and funny film, showing how headscarf-wearing young Iranian women aren't really all that different--they like Beckham, too. Alas, when women play soccer in Iran, men are not allowed to watch, and the enthusiastic women spectators are admonished by the 'morality police' to behave themselves. (Similarly, when men play, women are not allowed in the stadium (see, for example, the fictional film
Offside. The Iranian women in Football Undercover are the characters in Offside in real life.)) And given the current Olympics/sports/politics controversies, it's nice to see how sports can bring together people of different cultures. At
Hot Docs.
Shot in Bombay. Documentary that gives a behind-the-scenes look at the making of an Indian action movie, Shootout at Lokhandwala, based on real-life incidents where the police killed a group of gangsters in a shootout in a Bombay apartment building. The film stars Sanjay Dutt, who in real life was involved in a decades-long trial for weapons possession. Interesting look at movie-making in India, although I wish they had subtitles as sometimes it was difficult to understand everything as the subjects often talked rapidly with Indian-English accents. Also, the multiple threads of the story (real life incident, movie plot, movie production, Sanjay Dutt backstory and court case, Bollywood-mob connections, etc.) were sometime difficult to follow.

So my better half & I went to see
Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I thought it was a brilliantly written dramedy. The concept of the reversed roles of a heartbroken male was quite funny. Also, the poking fun at being "politically correct" wasn't overdone, nor preachy. There were moments when I was in stitches.

My bf on the other hand thought that "It was a raunchy straight male film." He says he just doesn't get those types of films! But he also didn't enjoy
The 40 Year Old Virgin, go figure. At any rate, I recommend it.

I watched Into the Wild this weekend and it was surprisingly good. I read the book ages ago and wasn't that interested in seeing it, but friends I visited had it from Netflix. It starts out with scenes with his family at graduation and then most of the movie is scenes with different friends he makes on the road, including an ancient looking Hal Holbrook, layered over with comments from his sister giving further information about their family life and the affect his absence is having on them. It was well acted and put together well I thought- not an easy book to make a movie of. I guess the lead starred in Lords of Dogtown- handsome and very similar looking to the kid he portrayed.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall was excellent. Kudos to Jason Segel for showing off ALL of his body!

Baby Mama let me down a lot. A handful of cute lines but very predictable and at times annoying. And I'll never figure out why Tina Fey, who is from the Phila. area, allowed them to insert a scene of her driving Amy Poehler across the Ben Franklin Bridge into New Jersey to get to the hospital, which an exterior shot later established as the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Which isn't anywhere in New Jersey.
I hope to see the Harold and Kumar sequel tomorrow.

Bought "Lars and the Real Girl" with Ryan Gosling a couple of weeks ago...and came away thoroughly impressed.
A very touching and heartbreaking story that Gosling and a tremendous supporting cast did wonders with.
His talent and ability to transform and absorb into the characters he portrays reminds me of Heath Ledger. A very brilliant young actor.

Went to see Iron Man. I love Robert Downey Jr. but the movie overall did not overwhelm me. And unlike other movies I've seen, there was no applause at the end. Usually with big hits there are people who insist on clapping as if they were at a live show. No reaction at all. I wonder if this is a sign of how it will do beyond the obvious first-weekend big number.

I didn't think that it was all that funny or
likeable (which is a trademark of the Apatow films; granted, he only co-produced this one). Peter was OK, but Sarah Marshall wasn't particularly interesting. It's hard to believe they were a couple (for years) in the first place. Aldous Snow was quirky, but he seemed to be coming from some other movie (
Love, Actually or one of those British comedies), and again, I didn't see what Sarah saw in him that they would have been together for a year. The minor characters, featuring Apatow regulars (the waiter, surfer dude, brother), didn't really add anything. Rachel I liked, although I wasn't crazy about the mixed signals she was sending. The "plot" seemed rather pointless at times--most of the time. I thought it was not in the league of Superbad and Knocked Up.
*The full-frontal nudity was actually a plus, in that in most films (see for example, Harold and Kumar Escape...) show off naked women, and I think it's funny that this one showed off a naked man.

I saw a small independent film called "The Visitor" a few weeks ago.
This movie was very good.
The movie starts out like it is a love story between the young couple, Tarek and Zainab. But it actually turns out to be a love story between two unlikely characters, Walter and Tarek's mother, Mouna.
By the way, the Lebanese actor who play's Tarek, Haaz Sleiman, is one of the most beautiful men I have ever seen. I hope to see more of him. He looks bi-racial and plays an illegal alien from Syria.
I would love to see what Haaz Sleiman looks like shirtless or with no clothes at all!

There was so much extra stuff put in, that wasn't in the book. The movie shoud have followed the book. Why mess with a classic.

" Iron Man" was good but not great-about what I expected from John Favreau-he does put emphasis on the comic- in this comic book adapatation. One forgets how charismatic Robert Downey Jr can be. The film needed a stronger villain and the big climax looked like an out take from the " Transformers"
