Bob Woodruff and his cameraman were injured in an explosion in Iraq. Not many details except that Bob suffered head injuries, is in serious condition and is undergoing surgery at a US military hospital in Iraq.

It does sound like the two men have significant head injuries. At least Woodruff is being operated on for his injuries.
I hate the reality of what I am about to say. We have seen over 2000 men and women lose their lives in Iraq. Each one has been heart-breaking for individual families. However, I think it has been hard for our society as a whole to empathize strongly with the plight of our troops.
Now that a very recognizable face that comes into peoples' homes on a nightly basis is a victim, perhaps people will be able to relate more easily to the harm that is coming to our citizens in uniform.
I pray that these men pull through and make full recoveries. It is sad when people who are just doing their jobs lose their lives. Whether it be the miners who were just trying to earn a living for their families, the police officer shot during a domestic violence call, or a reporter trying to bring the news to us -- they are all just trying to do their work and live their lives.

Apparently both men have undergone emergency surgery in Iraq, and the plan is to transport them to a hospital in Germany sometime tonight. The statement on the ABC site sounds a bit more optimistic, but says the next few days are critical.......

I was surprised to find out that Woodruff had ties to Michigan. He graduated from Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills,MI. Anyway on our local news they said that he did sustain head injuries as well as a broken collar bone but that his condition had stabilized.

If he weren't the anchor there wouldn't nearly be as much attention paid to this. The local news radio station here did special reports twice in a ten-minute span!
On the other hand, he doesn't exactly have the stature or fame of Peter Jennings or Dan Rather or Tom Brokaw.
Why anchors get the okay to go to war zones is beyond me. Does it really bump up ratings?

I don't know why anyone with 4 children would take that kind of risk unless he had to.

Saw a report on the news today about the field hospital they took Woodruff and Vogt to. The story followed a US soldier that lost both legs. Sadly, I don't remember his name. Nor do I remember breaking news stories about him when it happened. Understandable, but sad.
As to why anyone with 4 kids you do something so dangerous? Probably for the same reasons soldiers with 4 kids do, or cops in NYC, or firemen in Kansas City, or miners in West Virginia.
