Full Version: Castillo's streak

At Dodger Stadium last night (Dodgers defeated Boston--interleague play STILL confuses me) when Castillo's continuing streak was flashed on the jumbotron, there was a nice round of applause, but not the kind of cheering I thought it would engender. This led to a discussion around me as to why. Some reasons put forward:

--he's not a superstar. If it were Sosa or ARod with a 34 game hitting streak, there'd be more attention to it.
--Marlins. If a player on the Yankees or Cubs (any team with a more storied history) had this kind of streak, it would be bigger.
--hitting doesn't equal highlights. "Sportscenter" has a lot to answer for, I guess.

Any other ideas???

1. Unknown player
2. Marginal team in one of the mid markets

That sums it up.

Plus, he was nowhere near DiMaggio's major league record of 56. Or even the National League record (which I can't recall at the moment--I know Pete Rose had a 44-game streak, did anyone in the NL have more?). I think he would've had to get to 40 before there was some REAL buzz.
