For those of you who watch Lost, the character of Charlie was originally supposed to be " a washed up rock star in his 40's, like George Michael" but when Dominic Monaghan auditioned, they changed it to a 20-something one-hit wonder. Hee hee.
Bit rich of him to complain of manufactured boy bands when Wham! were partly responsible for helping start the trend, even though George turned out to really have talent unlike so many others in that genre.
And *meow* Elton John.

Wow, Tough crowd here at Outsports.
I thought all his stuff from Listen Without Prejudice on was pretty good. Even his last album. It was good Sunday afternoon music.

I thought most of his last album was pretty good. While I don't like when these old timers constantly bash the newbies, the comparison to boy bands is kind of inaccurate IMO because Michael is alot more talented than most of those guys. The guy can sing.

Patience is really, really good. It sounds as if being honest about himself and his life has actually given him the substance to become what he has been trying to become all along: a classic soul singer, except with his own unique twist. Say like Pet Shop Boys meets Stevie Wonder.
So what is his response to this long-in-the works breakthough? Retirement. Good grief, what a drama queen.

I'll miss his music, thought Patience was pretty good but not great. However, I won't miss his abrasive personality. I will never forget being at that huge concert at RFK Stadium in Washington back in '99 or '00 or whatever it was, and he badgered the audience by saying about one of his songs "this was a big hit in Europe, but no one in America bought it." I paraphrase, but it was totally obnoxious. He seemed to have a knack for self-involvement, didn't he?
You know this guy'll be back. He'll feel compelled to share his art with the world -- some deep, deep song like 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go'.
Don't you sometimes wish the gay/straight world could indulge in major league trades? Like we'll give you George Michael and Richard Simmons for Russell Crowe and Colin Farrell with a lesbian to be named later.
Disappear, George? Please do. Quickly.

I don't know. I think "gay culture" (not including ALL gays) worships at the feet of some much worse offenders of music than George Michael. And his music evolved quite a bit from the Wham days.
Madonna's early stuff isn't exactly great art. Cher put out alot of crap. Those American Idols! Britany Spears! Janet Jackson! I often think that if Billboard had a separate Gay 100 list it wouldn't look much different than the Teenage Girl 100.

I love George Michael and although most of his albums are hit-or-miss from song to song, he has a great voice and I do think he cared very much about his music, his art, and the material he was putting out there. So many pop stars make such disposable product ... at least George cared enough to try to maintain a sense of self-worth and pride in what he was doing.

Gee, I find Michael to be totally repugnant. I think he tried to woo the gay community AFTER he was busted, not before, because mainstream wasn't having any part of him. Total marketing campaign. Then I did catch him on Oprah when he discussed the arrest. He did admit he specifically followed the guy into the men's room (he first spotted him while driving around) but then called it entrapment. He described calling his bf from the police station and saying "oh darling, I've done something terrible".
Also, all his music sucked.

I went from hating George Michael, to LOVING him and RESPECTING him as an artist. Everything from Listen Without.....to Patience (Patience was one of my favorite CD's of 2004) has been excellent....I still don't care for many of his videos, but I think he's a talented songwriter and singer....one of the few male recording artist, I care for.
