The wonderful actor and star of Nick at Nite staple "Green Acres," Eddie Albert, has passed away. Arnold Ziffle remebered his co-star fondly, calling Albert "oink." wink

Bit of trivia; the first practice program aired by the NBC television network starred Eddie Albert.

I read that he was 99 years old when he died. That's a good life.

I loved Green Acres. I remember him in Oklahoma! as the pedler man (Ali Hakim?) who flirts with Ado Annie. And he was the mean warden in The Longest Yard. RIP.

I swear I didn't know he was still alive. 99 years old. Wow. Kind of a shame he didn't get to live to his 100th birthday like Bob Hope.

Albert died of pneumonia Thursday at his home in the Pacific Palisades area, in the presence of caregivers including his son Edward, who was holding his hand at the time.

\"He died so beautifully and so gracefully that literally this morning I don't feel grief, I don't feel loss,\" Edward Albert told The Associated Press.

Two thoughts come to mind upon learning of his passing away.

First, Eddie Albert was a total hunk when he appeared as the sleazy, but ultimately kind-hearted photographer in "Roman Holiday." He was so adorable with his face fur in the movie.

Second, though I only saw it once when it first came out, "Butterflies Are Free" featured his son Edward was a hunk in his own right.

Guess TV Land will do a tribute to him with a marathon of "Green Acres" showings, and deservedly so too.

Ironic he died the same day that the remake of one one of his most popular movies opened. He played the warden in the original The Longest Yard.

Green Acres has long been one of my guilty pleasures. It still makes me laugh out loud. To me it was the funniest of those so-called Rural Sitcoms of the late 60's, such as Petticoat Junction, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Andy Griffith Show, Gomer Pyle, etc.

He was nominated for the Academy Award twice: 1954 for Roman Holiday and 1972 for The Heartbreak Kid both for Supporting Actor. Never got an Emmy nod for Green Acres though!

Small correction-imdb.com lists his birthday as April 22, 1908 making him 97.

Yes, his son is still handsome and hunky.

From an AP report:

Mr. Albert's mother was not married when he was born, in 1906. After marrying, she changed his birth certificate to read 1908, the younger Mr. Albert said.
