First of all, he kicks serious butt. Second of all, he's following me.
I recently saw Closer and his song, "The Blower's Daughter", is the main theme that opens and closes the movie. Well, I thought it was five kinds of fantastic and set out to find out who sang the song. Once I found out, I was determined to own the song. I got one of those free Pepsi iTune downloads and got it ... but for some reason it didn't work right and wouldn't store on my iPod. So, yesterday, I rushed out to buy the new Tori Amos cd. One of the tracks on it is a duet - Tori NEVER does duets - with Damien Rice!!! It reminded me to buy his album. It was then that I realized his song "Volcano" was played quite a bit on VH-1 a while back and I had intended on looking more into him at that time, but I had forgotten to do so.
Then, last night, I was watching Lost and the closing of the show has a song that I was certain was ... you guessed it ... Damien Rice! And then I went to listen to my new cd and the very first track on the album, "Delicate", is that very same song.
I haven't had a chance to listen to all of O yet. But so far, so good ... the three songs I know are all amazing. He's the real deal in terms of singer/songwriters. Anyone else on the board a fan? I'm very excited to become more familiar with his work.

The video for "The Blower's Daughter" has been in fairly heavy rotation on VH1 of late.
I love the song, and I think it was used in a powerful way in "Closer."

I always have to give Tori a few spins before I form an opinion. Her music really reveals itself after multiple listening ... but I can say that I love the first single, "Sleeps With Butterflies."
I thought the previous cd - Scarlet's Walk - was Tori's best since her debut. I don't think The Beekeeper is gonna be quite that good, but Tori Amos is such a great musician/songwriter/artist ... if you liked her before, you'll like this cd too. She keeps up the quality, for the most part.

I didn't know "The Blower's Daughter" was an official single. I'll have to turn VH-1 on in the mornings before work in hopes of catching the video. Thanks!
And, yes, it really was perfect for Closer. I read on the Damien Rice message board that Jude Law said that the song chosen before most of the cast was chosen! ha ha.

OK, forget Tori, we all know she's good. Damien Rice is amazing live. I saw him in November of 2003 right after he won the Shortlist Prize (the American equivalent to the Mercury Prize). "O" has been out since the summer of 2003 and there is another CD with live tracks and a fantastic version of The Professor. While the opening band was playing I saw this cute, short guy pacing and admired his coat. After a few minutes I recognized him as Damien from interview pictures. I hadn't seen his videos yet. He and his mates were on their cell phones dialing, hanging up, switching phones, and redialing over and over. I didn't know what was going on. He had to put out his cigarette and came up next to me because there was an ashtray. I told him I was looking forward to seeing him perform and he said there might not be a show. Why not, I asked him. He said that his tour manager was missing. No one had seen him since 2:00 that afternoon and it was nearly 10PM. He said they called the police, hospitals, and the morgue with no luck. I didn't know if I could actually do anything to help but asked him if he (tour manager) was fond of the drink and Damien said, "No more than any other Irishman." It made him smile. Eventually he did perform but I do not know if the manager showed up. For most of the show Damien was in silhouette and as the music and the energy level began to build so did the stage lights until finally he was fully lit and the crowd was in a complete frenzy. The only other band that had that affect on me live was Sigur Ros with Scissors Sisters a close 2nd (for different reasons). Another song in Closer from O is Cold Water but only the beginning piano chords. They never used the whole song. I tell anyone who will listen about Damien Rice. I think I even mentioned him on the Song of 2004 thread but I'm not sure. And just like Cooperman, I still listen to O often.

Interesting story. Thanks, Simon. I hope the manager was okay! I'm not surprised to hear Damien is a good live act ... he needs to tour with Tori, just because I say so.

I thought Damien Rice was my own little secret. It is so nice to see others have found him. His music is hauntingly amazing!

I should have mentioned this earlier... The DVD for "Closer" comes out on March 29, and one of the extras is the video of Damien Rice's "The Blower's Daughter."

Thanks for the video link, OtherFSU. It will save me mindless hours in front of VH-1 trying to comb through Celebreality to see the clip!
I've listened to the whole album a couple of times now - am listening right now - and I think "Amie" is my favorite song, although the entire disc is fantastic. Good stuff.
And, as for the Tori album, I gotta say that it's grown on me alot already. Her music is becoming more linear in thought (more, not completely ... ha ha) and it gives the songs a bit more sense of structure. I'm all about one song on the new Tori disc right now, "Hoochie Woman," which is just loads of fun.

Here's a picture of Damien when he won the Shortlist Prize.
It's for all artists who have sold less than 50,000 units at the time of nominations.
