Who will win the ALCS, the Red Sox or the Yankees? Also let's discuss the series as it progresses. The poll will close Tuesday night at 8pm Eastern time.

I'll take the $@!&@ Yankees in 7. Bosox are probably the better team, but they'll no doubt find some bizarre, off-the-wall way to lose...just like they always do.
Joe in Philly
Yankees have the home field for 4 of 7, so Yankees in 7. And since I can't stand the idea of the Manager Who Must Not Be Named in the World Series, the Team Who Must Not Be Named with the Player Who Must Not Be Named will just have to lose, so I am temporarily rooting for the Yankees. wink

ESPN is reporting that Mariano Rivera has gone to Panama as two relatives of his wife were electrocuted while cleaning Rivera's pool.

QUOTE
When asked whether the situation would affect the Yankees' roster, GM Brian Cashman told the AP: \"It's a personal issue. That's that. We have until 10 a.m. Tuesday to deal with our roster.\"

Adam
I'll be contrarian--Boston in 7 & Jeter and/or A-Rod will commit a costly error in the seventh game.

Come on guys... Of course the team from Massachusetts is gonna win in 5! Go SOX!

What is this, a summary of the movie "The Village"? You're beginning to sound like those Yankees fans!
Joe in Philly
I'm waiting for the Yankees to win the series until I invoke his "name" -- not his real name but the one I normally use. wink

The Yankee starters have been holding up rather well so far. Of course they will be playing a team with two (not just one) ace starters (one of whom they have solved over the past few years). Also, I will take Mariano Rivera, Tom Gordon, and Paul Quantrill over Keith Foulke, Mike Timlin, and Alan Embree any day. Yankee hitting has been on fire. The wild card team faced some very suspect pitching in their Division Series.
Yankees in 7!
pat125
Yankees in 6 over the AL wild card team. As Cattledog stated, the Yankees pitching has held up rather well, and the hitting has started to come around again. The Yankees still have trouble against Schilling, but I see the Yankees winning at least one of the games in which he starts, by either solving him, or staying close until the Yankees can get to the bullpen. The Yankees should also be able to win at least one game at ballpark that must not be named. smile.gif So Yankees in 6.
Joe in Philly
Well, that was interesting. The ESPN Baseball Tonight crew says it's going to be tough mentally for Boston to rebound, after being down 8-0 with Schilling routed and Mussina going for a perfect game to incredibly getting within 8-7, only to give up 2 more to the Yankees to put it out of reach. They're saying that Boston should have put their closer Keith Foulke in to keep it at 8-7 going to the top of the 9th. Hmmmmmm...managerial mismanagement? wink And how hurt is Schilling?

I truly beleive the Yankees will win this series in 7 games against the Red Sox. These teams are so evenly matched and it will come down to whoever gets the breaks in game 7.

With Curt Shelling I mean Shilling hurt it enhances the Yankees chances!

I found the baseball Tonight crews' thought fascinating. The idea (first espoused by Kruk and then seconded by Reynolds) that the Red Sox would be particulary disheartened after this loss--having come back from an 8-0 deficit only then to lose 1-7--ran counter to what I had thought--but made perfect sense.

If Schilling's ankle had been re-injured during the Angels/Red Sox series, why weren't trainers/pitching coaches able to determine that before the game?

And Boston has to wonder, "What now?" They got Schiiling to join Pedro but they're down 0-2, Schilling is very questionable due to his injured ankle, and Pedro is wondering about his paternity. wink
Joe in Philly
Well, they had said that Schilling wouldn't pitch game 5, but they'd try and get him ready for a 6th or 7th game...though it really seemed unlikely. But now with tonight's game being rained out, there's an extra day. I wonder if he'll really try to pitch again?
phillyrunner
Before the rainout tonight they were showing Schilling throwing, so perhaps the Red Sox may start him Monday if he is feeling up to it.
Marc
What rain-out?? Red Sox won 3-2 so they are now down by just one game in the series! Oh, wait a minute, was that Andy Pettitte sitting on the Yankees' bench? What about Aaron Boone, Alfonso Soriano and cute David Dellucci? On the Red Sox side, wasn't that Nomar playing short-stop?

I don't know what viewers of Sportsnet's three other Canadian divisions were seeing, but RSN West substituted tonight's game with a replay of last year's ALCS Game 4. No hockey to talk about I guess; gee, I wonder why? I think Fox ended up showing re-runs of 'Will and Grace'.

Picking up on that gay theme...earlier today, I heard part of a radio interview with a Boston-area reporter who said that some (and I stress, just some) Red Sox fans have been questioning the sexuality of Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter. First I've heard about this. I doubt very much if either of them are gay, but so what if they are? Being gay (or straight) is irrelevant to one's ability or character. Obviously the intent of these malicious fans is to denigrate A-Rod and Jeter, who from what I've seen, are two of the nicest and most talented players in the game (and I say that without being a big fan of the Yankees!)

Those Red Sox fans ought to worry more about their manager than the sexuality of the opposing team....

Red Sox manager Terry Francona said he was undecided about whether he would start star Pedro Martinez or Derek Lowe against the New York Yankees in Game 5, which, if necessary, would be played 5 p.m. Monday, following last night's rainout. Asked why he just didn't go with Martinez, Francona snapped:

\"I don't want to...I don't want to do that, whether you want me to or not...What it comes down to is it's based on we're trying to win the series.\"

Hmmm. Pressured, anyone?
This would seem to be a no-brainer. Pedro pitching at home on Monday, or back in front of the Daddy-taunting crowd in NY?

So I travel to Boston yesterday for the NU/DU hockey game. I take the Green Line "D" from way the heck outside the city. Not realizing that this is the branch that goes to Fenway, I notice more and more Red Sox fans boarding the car/train. Eager faces waiting to see their team defeat their arch-rivals. Cherubic little children screetching with delight for a night at the ballpark. Oh, the excitement of playoff baseball at its best!

After the game (pictures & recap forthcoming), I grab a quick bite (mmmm Boston Market), and then head back up the Green Line to my car, hoping to hear a score of the game on the way. Last score I heard was 6-6 while eating. Nothing new at Copley station. Still tied when we get to Kenmore.

"Next stop Fenway," annouced our conductor! The doors opened, and a gasp rattled through the car. The only sound heard was the cacophony of the entire citizenry of Massachusetts punching through their rib cages, ripping out their still barely beating hearts, and then watching said organs turn black and die. The stench of gore and offal was overpowering. I may need more therapy! eek!

My only hope is that redsoxbreath, and his fellow Outsporters of the Red Sox Nation are still with us today. I truly fear for their safety.
Adam
Imagine the level of despair if--by some unforseen phenomenon--the Patriots' streak ends today. With the Red Sox and that Bostonians will be inconsolable.

I think the rumors could have been fueled by Dan Patrick & Rob Dibble prior to the Yankee/Red Sox series. Dibble joked he hates Jeter and A-Rod for their talent, money, and dreamy looks that get all the ladies (adding that when he played, he had no groupies who weren't in jail) to which Patrick asked "What makes you think men aren't attracted to their looks, too? Especially since they're such close friends, like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon." Typical puerile sportstalk.

Joe in Philly
Dan Patrick is such a creep.

Meanwhile, on ESPN.com's Page 2 is a recap of last night's game from Bill \"The Sports Guy\" Simmons. It includes this passage:

QUOTE
When you're headed into a must-win game, most managers come up with some sort of emergency plan ahead of time, just in case their starter doesn't have it. Like any rational Sox fan, we assumed that Terry Francona's plan was, \"I'll start Arroyo, but if he's struggling early, I'll go right to Derek Lowe or Tim Wakefield. I can't take any chances tonight.\"

Nope.

Here was Francona's plan: \"If Arroyo doesn't have it, but the game is still close, I'm going to bring in the worst reliever in my bullpen. If that guy doesn't have it, I'm bringing in the second-worst reliever in my bullpen. And if that guy doesn't have it, and we're way behind, that's when I'll bring in Lowe or Wakefield. By the way, I'm doing this because I'm really hoping to get fired next week.\"
Oh my.

I'm a huge ARod fan and a Yankee hater. This is all so sad! ARod may (and I stress MAY, since STL is good) win his first ring, but he will do it as just another Yankee. Whereas if he was a Red Sox, and won a title, he would have been a legend in baseball, another Yaz.

So sad.
phillyrunner
Looks live the Sox are coming back from the dead tying in the 9th inning ...
Joe in Philly
It's amazing that the game was 19-8 last night and took over 4 hours, and tonight it's only 4-4 and it's about 4 hours right now. Why won't this end??? I want to watch my tape of tonight's Desperate Housewives, dammit!!!!!! wink

Regardless of what happens, Boston is prolonging the inevitable.
fenwayguy
Omigosh, the Sox pulled it off, 6-4 in 12 on another Ortiz homer. Must. sleep. now.

I wouldn't call wearing a "Jeter Sucks A-Rod" t-shirt a matter of "questioning their sexuality"... like Dan Patrick's comment, I'd call it gay-baiting.

Another day, another 4-hour-plus game? I don't know the exact time it started, of course. But with it going to extra innings again tonight, it's pretty much guaranteed.

The NLCS game's actual start time (as compared to the time the telecast would've started if not for the AL game) was set for 8:42 pm -- this is a joke. I'm really sick and tired of it. The games MUST start earlier and they MUST cut down on the TV commercials between innings.

It's a brilliant game. I can't believe all your ballplayers aren't on line chiming in on the progress of the game--that's what we tennis freaks do during the big events broadcast live.

The game tonight is so exciting and Arroy0 (sp?) just pitched an amazing inning.
fenwayguy
Damn, dude! No matter who wins this thing (ok, Red Sox of course!), this is one helluva ballgame!
Ed13
What incredible drama! The last two games have been classics to remember! 2 more games!

The quietness of certain posters is deafening. I guess sometimes "evil" can win over "good". tongue.gif Just glad the game started at 4 PM, or else it would have been an all nighter.

I wonder what the bullpens will have remaining after two extra inning games in a row. Would the Yankees use Mariano for a third straight game tommorow if needed?

And what happens if Schilling can only pitch 3-4 innings? Chance of heavy rain in NY tomorrow, so game could be postponed, which both teams probably are hoping for.

I sit in front of the computer a lot, but not every time a game is on. tongue.gif The TV in my living room has a 32-inch screen while my computer is in the room with the 19-inch TV, so if I really want to watch the game I'll generally be in the living room.

I have to give credit to Boston for not giving up...but on the other hand, this is just adding a level of torture to their fans. A sweep would've been just humiliating, but now that they've won two dramatic games their fans have hope again, and I still expect that hope to be crushed in New York.

According to AccuWeather.com the heavy rain is expected to taper off during the day, so it might be just a few showers by game time...which better not be 8:42 pm, dammit!

I would happily trade a few hours of sleep for what has transpired in games 4 (I was there) and 5 (I wish I was there). But I am feeling that driven-crazy October buzz, so it must be the Red Sox. No predictions. Ever.

Rain? Who knew? wink
Joe in Philly
Game time is listed in my paper as 8:19 pm. Even that is too long. Weather permitting, it should be no longer than 8:10.
Adam
I hope rain doesn't effect the game tonight if for no other reason than I want to be able to watch both the AL & NL games without having to move between channels (it took awhile to even find fx last night.) And, anyway, don't we all know the Red Sox won last night because losing today will hurt more. wink

~Adam
Joe in Philly
There's no NL game tonight. This is their travel day. Yesterday was supposed to be the AL travel day but the rainout on Friday wiped it out. Of course, Boston-to-NYC is such a tremendous distance... wink Looking at the radar, it appears the heavy rain is gone -- just some light rains scattered in the area.
