it's not lookin too good for the division, especially with the Pirates within shouting distance of the leaders .... are we gonna have a '72 (right year?) Mets type race with someone winning the division with 84-85 wins

No -- let's keep 'em sleeping! It makes the Brew Crew not look so wretchedly awful -- at 36-52 (a slight improvement over last year btw -- emphasis on slight) they've consistently been only some 9 or 10 games out of first.
Keep hope alive!

If the Breweres get back in the race (w/in 5 games) , then I am nominating the NL Central for contraction.

Uh oh, now you've done it. You're gonna tick off the Cardinals fans here!

Ticking off the St. Louis fans is what I do best.

Great idea, Breesboy. But I've got a better idea - contract the AL Central as well!
Might as well clean the whole house at once. wink

I think the Astros have a decent chance of pulling away from the rest of Comedy Central, and winning close to 90 games. (I wouldn't discount St. Louis either. As for the Cubs, Dusty needs to pull Estes from the rotation and make Farnsworth the closer.)
No, the NL East race that the Mets won with a 82-79 record was 1973.

Looks like Comedy Central is the Astros to lose now, with the Cards pitching causing the Dodgers offensive renaissance, for gods sake, Rickey homered off of em.

sure it might be a laugh a minute, but the Central race may just become a 3-way tie if the Cubs hold on.....
...which they did...
Go Phils!! Go Reds!!
(postgame edit)
and now looky ... guess who's in 1st

I'd object to that  . And why would you want to get rid of a bunch of Twinks

wink . If you want to contract teams, make it the Yankees and the Mets.

The Astros.

But hey, the Cubs are still ahead of the Cards.

Let's go 'Stro's!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm going to be at those late three games of the season down in Houston against my Giants boys (Sept 22, 23, 24). Anybody else planning on being there? I used to live in Houston so I'm pumped about seeing the 'Stro's again (as well as Jeff Kent from the Giants). I've never been to that new stadium either!

the more these teams flail and stick around .500, the more I would LOVE to see the Pirates get hot win about 10 in a row and get in this too.

With their 8-game winning streak my Brew Crew has attained their primary goal -- to be better than last year's team (thank god!). When Ulice Payne took over the operations he vowed they'd have a better record and play better baseball -- they've now won as many games (56) as in 2002! ... and only two games out of second-last place -- one improvement at a time!

Yahoo! As a Brewers fan, I take in those rare moments of joy when I can -- they've just won TEN IN A ROW (for the first time in lord knows how many seasons), have pulled into a tie for 5th place with the Reds in the NL Central, and are within spittin' distance on the 4th place Pirates.
And my new bf Scotty Posednik is being mentioned as an NL Rookie of the Year candidate (that damn Florida pitcher stands in the way).
Now if they can just hold onto Geoff Jenkins and Richie Sexson in the off-season, things look better for 2004.

Uh, not just him. Brandon Webb of Arizona should actually be NL ROY, then Willis. And Jason Phillips of the Mets very well outproduce Podsednik by season's end among rookie hitters...
Back to the race: Dusty STILL won't take Estes out of the Cub rotation?

Bucky: it was '88, remember the 13-0 start, which they gave away by mid-May

Cute story, but unfortunately no pictures yet: "Ned Yost and his coaching staff promised their players they would wear waitress outfits from a Hooters restaurant if the team swept the Cincinnati Reds to extend its winning streak to 10 games.
As the Brewers headed for Chicago on Thursday afternoon, Yost and the coaches looked so cute in those tiny orange shorts and cutoff white tops."

I am SOOOO digging it that my "new" Padres beat Houston to put my "old" Cubbies into first place! And with the Sox leading their division, "El Series" here we come!

Way to go Cubbies!!! Hope they can make a decent showing against the Braves. My guess would be that they won't pitch Kerry Wood Sunday, and instead use him in game 1 on Tuesday. I can't wait for this series to start!

Yep, save up Wood, so he can serve up big fat home run pitchers for Sheffield, Furcal and the other Atlanta hotties to tee off. But seriously, it ought to be an interesting series.
GO YANKEES!!!
