Full Version: Cardio music at the gym

I work out at a suburban Philadelphia Ballys where they usually play dance/club music in the evenings. I would guess that the clientel is probably 80%straight/20%gay.

Anyway a song by Erasure came on, I had not heard before. It was a remake of the Ronettes "Walking in the Rain" It was kind of odd hearing a man singing lyrics such as
"I want him, and I need him, And someday someway wooo I'll meet him He'll be kind of shy, and real good lookin' too And I'll be certain he's my guy by the things he'll like to do"

Oddly enough nobody seemed to react to it. Could it be that in the new millenium most guys are now indifferent to role reversal lyrics in music? I bet only about 15 years ago I would have heard jeering and turn it off especially at a gym.
cowboystx
After a while, all this techno sounds the same. The guys are focusing on their muscles, not the music. Techno is probably the standard in most health clubs today.
Allen
Okay, when ya work as a dj/vj, you know the difference between techno, trance, tea dance music and others. HOWEVER ...

I'm looking for some music to work out to that IS NOT dance music. DO any of you have any ideas??

Allen
Trevor
Personally, I enjoy dance music to work out to. I have made my own CD's to use at the gym, because they were playing way too much R&B music that I don't like on the stereo system.

My current CD is quite a mix.

Trevor

Erasure is a group that has always had a substantial non-gay audience, so the choice of song is not unusual for them. I think music at the gym is usually background noise; most people who want to work out to music wear headphones and listen to music of their own choosing, so the music may not even have registered with most. That's what I do, and the MP3's I've mixed to listen to do have several Erasure songs. BTW, "Walking In The Rain" is on the latest Erasure CD called "Other People's Songs," which is quite good. It's all covers, and has some interesting choices, like "Solsbury Hill" and "You've Lost That Loving Feeling."
theodoresdaddy
I work out at a suburban 24 Hour and it's never fails to astonish me some of the music they play.

It's a very STRAIGHT gym and there aren't more than a handful of gay guys who work out there, my partner and myself included.

Maybe I'm just clueless and living in San Francisco for too long has ruined my gaydar!

Allen, try opera arias or Wagner, some can be quite rousing and also give you several different paces to work to. The soundtrack for the movie "Aria" is very good. And as I think about it, for example, Cirque du Soliel uses opera-ish music to great effect. Think Wagner's "Flight of the Valkeries", I think that's what it's called, very rousing. Or Vaughn Williams for stretching and cycling.
stinger85
Rather than starting a new thread I thought I'd post in this one, as it is some what relative. I was at a club/bar over the weekend and heard a remix version of Christina's "Dirrty." It wasn't a typical remix though. It was basically like the album version with the bass from another song laced under it. Does anybody know how I can find a place to get this song?
KeyWest Guy
Stinger, are you sure it wasn't "Fighter" rather than "Dirrty"? The Hani remix of "Fighter" fits your description to a T. It's the single edit over the bass line of "Bad Mama Jamma".
fanonscudder
It's def. the Hani remix of "Fighter", I'm a huge Hani fan since I heard the bootleg Sade's, his take on "Wicked Game", and his "Earth Song" remix. At risk of going way off topic - what do people use to listen to music at the gym? I just bought a RIO Sport mp3 player for my partner for x-mas. I hope it's a good one.
swimmer
As a swimmer in college, we would train in the weight room with the football players. They controlled the music, of course, since it was "their" weight room. This would have been in the early to mid 80s, and they played nothing but White Snake. To this day, whenever I hear White Snake, I think about lifting weights and sweaty athletes. wink
stinger85
It was "Dirrty." I'm sure of it. I tried searching the net for it and I found a Thunderpuss remix and a Radio Slave mix. I think I've heard the Thunderpuss remix and it's not that one. I'm going to go to a record store today and see if I can find it. I thought I'd check on here first so I don't end up buying a lot of singles of "Dirrty" for just one song.
varig3
No dance at Bally's here in South Texas. We still get guitars and grunting. They only play dance on Saturday mornings when all the women come in to work out (in full makeup usually).

My gym in suburban Jersey is at least 90% straight with the out of shape men and older women on the treadmills and the guys working with weights generally in their mid 20s to early 30s. The music played there is wretched. Usually dance music...sometimes some hip hop thrown in. Rock music should be the norm in there. Not necessarily heavy metal but alternative/modern rock is excellent to work out to. Unfortunately the pion that works the front desk wont play it because he thinks its too loud and will offend the handful of women at the gym...please. The guys in the gym are in their 20s and mainly white. Their music of choice is certainly on the rock side but yet the gym caters to the women and older set even though they are in the minority. At least its better than a few years ago when such songs a Enrique Iglesias "Hero" were playing. How the hell can you work out to that song!!!

If they (or anyone) doesn't like the music played at the gym, they can do one of two things:

1) Go to another gym. Most likely, other gyms play the same kind of music. I guess they figure dance stuff will get people to move more readily than rock does.

2) Bring headphones with your music of choice. If you want to work out to Iron Maiden or if I want to rock out to Stevie Nicks on the treadmill, then I'll do it.
TonkaManOR
I have found that the best music at the gym I frequent, 24 Hour Fitness, is on my iPod. It also keeps me from jabbing with people instead of working out. wink

If I'm lifting weights or trying to keep up a high speed on a
treadmill or stationary bike, I prefer industrial (essentially
techno crossed with heavy metal). Loud, abrasive, aggressive,
and very cathartic.

I prefer KMFDM, Ministry, and Pop Will Eat Itself, but I'll
also listen to other groups and some techno/dance or punk.

Hey guys, I am having a hard time finding some good music to do cardio to. I like house and some techno, but I need to find a CD that stays around 65-70 beats per minute so I can keep a good cardio workout going. I tried Oakenfold yesterday, and it was pretty good for about 3 songs, but then it just died and dropped to about 45-50, which killed my workout.

Any suggestions? I like all those gay anthems too, Just anything with a good beat. Thanks

Bob,

First of all a great big congrats on smackin that Griz around. Did you get a piece of goalpost? Or can you remember? biggrin.gif

Perfect timing on the cardio tunes question. I just got in from a short lunchtime run using BostonGirl's MP3. I'd never heard this particular playlist before, so it kept my boredom down (and motivation up). Here's the playlist:

I Am What I Am (Queer as Folk soundtrack)
Like the Way I Do - M. Etheridge
Boom Boom Boom
We Can't Get There
I Know What I Want
How Can I Live Without You
Love Don't Cost A Thing - J. Lo
Around the World - ATC
I Touch Myself - Divinyls
Out of Nowhere - Gloria Estefan
Ain't That a Lot of Love

...you get the picture...

Good luck!

Masterbeat is a great source for hopping dance music. I like that a lot.

Party Groove has some great dance albums that are pure high energy.

I've sold alot of Party Groove and Masterbeat CDs for cardio workouts.

Try those!!

Thanks, both of you! These are great suggestions.

Oh ya, to Jamie, I stood there and watched as the young'ins tried to get the goal post down. Being an engineer I kept thinking, "don't you guys know anything about Moment arms? Get up high and you may be able to get it out of the ground." LOL They got the uprights off, but couldn't get it all the way out of the ground.

It was our first time in 18 years that we won at home though, so I'll given the benefit of the doubt. he he he

Here's some Gator Lovin for ya Jamie! Go Gators!!! I'll be rootin for ya kiddo!

Allen, thanks for the suggestions, It'd be awesome to meet ya sometime I think.

Any other suggestions for music would rock too.

I think I need to get an MP3 player one of these days.

Posted by Mariner Duck Boy (Member # 29) on November 25, 2003, 10:31 AM:

First of all, YES get a MP3 player.

If you like Pop songs remixed to a thump thump thump beat, then you should look into the Almighty cd's. I have a cd called "Almighty Down Under" and everytime I play it in my car, one of my friends wants a copy of it for their workout.

I enjoy Oakenfld & the like, but sometimes their techno sounding remixes gives me a headache.

And, what about making your own workout cd's?

Tony Moran and Julian Marsh are amazing DJs!! Every CD I have of theirs is unreal. I love it!

Rosabel, DJs Abel and Ralphie Rosario, are a great duo. Their Fireball 2003 CD does wonders when you do cardio.

Thunderpuss is awesome as well.

Susan Morabito, someone I haven't heard in awhile, uses great upbeat instrumental dance music. She is pure fun!

Louie DeVito is very hit and miss. His last CD I bought, I really didn't care for.

Johnny Vicious is one of the best DJs in recent years. I've bought many CDs by him and they never bore me at all.

I hope this helps you. biggrin.gif

I generally make my own compilation discs that way I can put somewhat slower songs from my warm up and cool down.

Hey guys,

Try any of the "Plastic" series of CDs (I think there's six of them now.) They're techno CDs that remix stuff like Sarah McLachlan, Garbage etc etc. Features a lot of Calderone re-mixes, which I like. If you like Sarah McLachlan, you might also want to pick up her re-mixed CD (released a couple of years ago...it's a good one).

Safri Duo is also great.

Have fun.

Ok - admit it.

When most of us go to the gym we are looking for something a little different than what we normally listen too all the rest of the time.

Maybe something a little more 'driven'? Something to get the blood moving? Something to zone out to?

What are the top dozen songs you like to listen too when working out and why?

Do you have different choices for pumping iron than for working the eliptical? Something differrent for warm up or cool down?

What are your choices?

R

Another boring day in DC - jeez, they just dismissed for lunch and its not even 11:30 yet!

Posted by Allen (Member # 1496) on October 19, 2005, 08:50 AM:

I do listen to the hard rock station at my gym I go to.

Sometimes, I do put in some circuit music to pump me up during my workout when Metallica is not cutting it for me.

Posted by rickinto (Member # 109) on October 19, 2005, 09:41 AM:

okay on my Playlist for the gym, that is on my Ipod...

Forever Young...Alphaville
Train Wreck (remix)...Sarah McLachlan

Frozen...Madonna

This is usually for warm up..then I go into a lot of remix songs for the main part of my workouts...

Phantom of the Opera (trance)...Chris Sheppard
Ray of Light..Madonna
Rasputin (remix)...Boney M
Rocket man (Rave remix)...Elton John

I touch Roses...Book of Love
One..U2

So there you have one of my Playlists from my Ipod.....oh I listen to it pretty loud too. wink
George Twins fan
If I work out in the morning, I listen to Howard Stern. I end up laughing and people are looking at me even more oddly than usual.

In the afternoon, it's a mix of rock music-Foo Fighters, Nirvana, U2, Marshall Crenshaw, REM, Pete Yorn, Green Day, Franz Ferdinand are among the current heavy rotation.
Neptune
If lifting, I tend to listen to rap, hip hop or rock, whereas if I'm running, it's usually techno/club music, with some other stuff liberally interspersed in each. I don't know why my workouts are genre specific, other than the different moods of each workout.

On my ipod, my current running mix has:
Kate Bush - "Running up that Hill"
Bloc Party - "Like Eating Glass"
Prodigy - "Smack My Bitch Up"
Missy Elliot - "Lose Control"
Jay-Z - "99 Problems" (Danger Mouse Grey album mix)
Beyonce - Crazy in Love
ShapeUK - "Lola's Theme" (remix)
Bjork - "Pluto"
Madonna - "What it Feels Like for a Girl" (Above and Beyond mix)
Basement Jaxx - "Red Alert"
Gwen Stefani - "What You Waiting For"
DJ Shadow - "You Can't Go Home Again"
Shakira - "La Tortura" (Shaketon mix)
Kylie Minogue - "I Believe in You"
Kanye West - "The New Workout Plan"
Rob Base & DJ E.Z. Rock - "It Takes Two"
Michael Jackson (eww I know..) - "Wanna Be Starting Something"

For lifting:
Notorious BIG - "Machine Gun Funk"
Nas - "You Know My Style"
Lil Kim - "I'm Human"
Cassidy - "I'm a Hustler" (remix)
Franz Ferdinand - "Take Me Out"
Little Vicious - "Freaks"
Missy Elliot "Hot Boys"
GnR - "Welcome to the Jungle"
Damien Marley - "Welcome to Jamrock"
Jay-Z - "Big Pimpin'"
Salt N Pepa - "Push It"
Kanye West - "Jesus Walks"

It's pretty eclectic, reflecting my musical tastes. And I try to switch it up every couple of weeks to keep my workout fresh.

MY gym, in North Wildwood New Jersey, has a primarily older clientele when I work out. I am there usually first thing in the morning and the music at 6 AM is all oldies all the time. MAKES me TWITCH LOL. But what ya gonna do. They use SIRIUS, which isn't bad but you would think that with 100 stations to choose from we could at least listen to music from this century. When the volunteer fireman show up, it usually switches to some kind of metal crap, guess it is that lovely music gap from the 80's. I wish I could work out with headphones but unless I am on one of the cardio machines I just can't wear them so I just grin and bear it mainly cause I love tyhe gym.

Very gay friendly, except for me and my bud Mikie everyone else is mostly to completely closeted. Which pisses me off but everyone knows and no one gives a crap so what the heck.
basketballfan29
I usually listen to something that makes me want to dance.. ahla Britney or some Missy Elliott gem.
J eddie
I usually use the eliptical trainer and I definitely need to listen to something with a steady beat.I don't know how familiar many of you are with a singer by the name of Shannon.Anyway she was more popular in the 80s and 2 of her songs "Let the Music Play" and "Give Me Tonight" seem to have the perfect tempo for exercising. She released a CD last year with those 2 songs(including house mixes) as well as some other up tempo tunes."Give Me Tonight" is one of my all-time favorite songs and it really is perfect for cardio!

Guys,

I've found that I do my best biking/running at the gym with a fast-paced, pounding soundtrack. But I'm sort of getting tired of the same old songs.

My tastes run in the the U2, REM, POD, Peter Gabriel, Foo Fighters, Chris Brown, Underworld, Kanye West (Pop/Rock/Alt/Rap) genres.

Do you guys have some specific suggestions for good workout music?

I can download individual songs so I don't need album suggestions, just a good playlist.

Thanks in advance.
