Tonight, 8:00 Season 1 recap, 9:00 Season 2 premier.

What's in the hatch???
CHIathlete
....a man.

A man ... known to Jack. Ack!
Herr Tiggee
I can't believe I missed it. Anyone care to fill us in on what happened so we don't feel "lost" on the next episode?
John King
I thought that it was good. The part about the lady in the hospital was touching.

Plus, I think Matthew Fox is hot.
kick
Wasn't the girl in the hospital the woman that Jack was engaged to last season in the flashbacks- who he had helped fix- thought he was in love- then realized that he wasn't and pretty much left her at the altar?

I think the friend in the stadium was named Desmond- interesting that upon leaving to run that Desmond stated something like- "See you in another life..." or something- does anyone know exactly what was stated?
Gaga4Gaby
I was actually severely underwhelmed with last night's season premiere. I didn't think it was bad, really, but the guy in the hatch seemed a bit far-fetched to me. I got the distinct impression that perhaps the hatch was more of a symbol than an actual plot point until, over the summer, writers and producers realized what a stir they created by having a secret in the hatch. This Desmond was introduced in the same episode and the "see you in another life" was such a dead giveaway. I had held off from reading the spoiler that was linked in the Fall TV thread and I should have just read it ... would have perhaps been less disappointed with the revelation.

Matthew Fox's hotness does account for something, it's true. And yes, Sarah (the patient who he saved last night) is the woman he was preparing to marry in last season's flashbacks.

Overall, I'd say it was decidedly ho-hum.
orsino4
Jack didn't leave Sarah at the altar. The episode made everyone watching *think* he was going to, but then during the vow he was especially sappy. As of now, we don't know what happened to Sarah to eliminate Jack's married status.

I thought the episode was terrible. I thought the mystery would have been much more interesting if they hadn't shown what was in the hatch at the very beginning. After that, the rest was just dull.

The bad decision crew seems to be in full force again.
"Oh, you're NOT going down the hatch now."
"Okay, I won't. I'll just go back to the camp then go back to the hatch alone later."
"Good idea, then I'll wait a while, then finally join you, so we can go down separately. I need to be totally clueless as to what happens to you and Kate. As an added bonus we each can be ambushed separately."
"Good plan"

...I disagree. There are still so many other mysteries and unsolved questions, this was just one of them. I thought the episode last night was excellent! Matthew Fox is not only VERY hot, he is also an amazing actor, The fact that he was overlooked for an Emmy nomination is shocking.

I can't wait for the next episode.

Also enjoyed the new program that aired after LOST, 'Invasion', written and produced by Hardy Boy Shaun Cassidy.
Gaga4Gaby
I did enjoy the use of the Mamas and the Papas ... I've been singing "Make Your Own Kind Of Music" (is that the title?) in my head ever since.

I also liked the sequence where Hurley told Jack his bedside manner sucked, which lead to Jack's bedside manner actually sucking, which lead to Jack trying to calm the crowd in the cave. Good writing/directing there.

I would liked to have seen more Sun and Jin ... or at least something to do with the people on the raft, other than the vision of a dripping wet Walt. Hopefully that's for next week.

I thought last night was a very a fine episode. If Matthew Fox uses this episode for his Emmy reel next eyar, he should be a lock for a nomination.

Of course the show stretches plausibility. But that is what I love about it.

Lots of numbers info last night. When Desmond was pedaling the bike, the speedometer was 16 MPH. When he opened the safe, he stopped at 42. The guy who dies in the ER died at 8:15. The number painted on the wall in the hatch was 108, which is the total of Hurley's lottery numbers.

I couldn't figure out what Walt-vision was trying to say to Shannon.
CharlesK
I actually kind of enjoyed the show last night. If any of you watch Alias, you'd know that last night's premier was typical J.J. Abrams, where all is not revealed OR resolved in the first episode, and plausability? I gave up on plausability with Alias, so why should Lost be any different? Sometimes, you just need to escape reality and Lost does that for me.

Matthew Fox is just a niblet waiting to eaten, but my only problem with him last season was that his acting range hadn't changed much from "Party of Five." Last night's episode showed so much more of what he is capable of that, yes, if he uses this episode for Emmy consideration, he should nail the nomination.

However, I think Josh Holloway (Sawyer) is hotter! His swimming for the oar last night was just far too sexy for television.

A straight female friend of mine loves Sawyer and all her girlfriends love Sawyer. I told her that, mostly, I hear the gay boys talking about Jack and maybe a little about Boone before he bit the dust. She always shakes her head.

I reported to her that a Sawyer fan had emerged on the board and she responded: "YES! FINALLY! A MAN WITH SOME TASTE!"

No way, Jack all the way!

What about Hurley? eek!

Gaga! I've touted the hotness of bad-boy Sawyer in last season's thread! (Although I've loved Matt Fox since Party of Five.)

Anywho, I'm late to this party but I still want to say that this week's premiere was good. Not compelling, but interesting and worth following. I'm just glad the show is back on the air. I'm wanting to know more about this guy in the hatch and what weird Unibomber manifesto he's been working on. At least it was aliens down there! That would have been silly. (Oh, but if you waited an hour, you'd see the aliens. Ugh, Invasion was so disappointing, but I'm only watching for Eddie Cibrian!)

The only thing that annoyed me about this episode of Lost is Kate's character. She's starting to annoy me how she's constantly defying Jack. Geez, woman, don't you ever learn! Listen to the man!

That's right. I'm sorry, batboy. I'll make sure to give you props for representin' Sawyer lovers to my friend. She'll be much obliged.

I was all about Scott Wolf during Party of Five. But he hasn't aged nearly as well ...

I didn't think showing the inside of the hatch at the beginning was giving away too much. I am sure it is only a snippet of what is to come, plus I bet most viewers had a idea by the end of last season that there would be people inhabiting the hatch.

Interesting comment by Sarah to Jack when he approaches her hospital bed and she asks why he smells. Reminds me of the "Mommy, you smell different" phrase I heard on the Invasion previews.

I wonder what that juice was that was injected at the beginning of the show. Has Barry Bonds been visiting the hatch? eek! This could explain why Ethan was so strong.
CycloneMatt
I liked the episode except I thought they should have changed something around. When they introduced Desmond in the stadium running flashback, I remember thinking "that's probably the guy down the hatch." It just seemed too obvious. I thought it might have worked better to not show the flashback first, have the scene where Jack sees the gun held to Locke's head, sees Desmond's face, THEN has the flashback to the stadium. Would have been more of a 'surprise' moment instead of 'duh' like we thought here. Or maybe even worked it into the show at the end of last season somehow and flashed back very briefly on Wednesday. I know the writers didn't know where they were going with the hatch at that point, but might have been an option.

Did anyone else think the revelation of the man down the hatch being Desmond was kind of anti-climactic the way it was edited together? Just wondering if I'm the only one who thought this (probably!) tongue.gif

So, next episode of Lost is tonight. I'm hoping to get more involved with the new storylines this week, since last week didn't do much for me.

Internet buzz is that the vision of Walt that Shannon saw was speaking backwards and he was saying "Don't Push The Button." And that there was a button somewhere in the hatch that Jack was about to push or is close enough to push ... I've already forgotten, so I may give the season premiere a second chance during the repeat tonight. The supposedly interesting thing about Walt speaking backwards is that there were mirrors all over the hatch?? Hmmmm.

Also, there is talk of a patch that Desmond was wearing and it's significance. Just some things to be aware of tonight for anyone who relishes trying to figure out all the little clues in the episodes.
George Twins fan
Damn, this show rocks! I loved how we got to see tonight what went on in the hatch with Kate and Locke before Jack got down there. And what a great ending!

The stuff on the ocean with Michael and Sawyer was a bit thin but overall a greta followup to last week.

Wonder where all that prepackaged food came from in the pantry like (Apollo Candy?). It could not have been there from the ship that arrived sixteen years earlier otherwise it would have been rotten.

The logical explanation is that Desmond brought the supplies with him. He's clearly some whacko survivalist who is convinced the rest of the world perished in some sort of contagion (his injecting himself with some liquid, his locking himself in the hatch with years of supplies, his booby-trapping the only way in and out of his lair, his asking about whether any of the others had gotten ill, his surprise to hear that the rest of the world is still alive...). But what remains to be answered is how a single person assembled all that stuff, dug out his cave, fitted it with computers and hatches and has an ample supply of power. Obviously, not something he did on his own.

All this leads back to the question, what is this island about? Desmond's presence makes me think more and more that this island is some sort of testing ground, perhaps military or intelligence-oriented. Like a place where the military drops people to see how they cope after a catastrophe (the Oceanic survivors -- strange how so many survived a plane crash without any physical harm, like they were dropped there), how they would cope in isolation after some holocaust (Desmond), and what they may become after years of lawlessness (the French woman, the Others). Maybe the supernatural stuff (the monster) is part of some weapons experiments or maybe the military was just unlucky in choosing an island full of peculiar phenomenon. Just a theory.
Gaga4Gaby
I enoyed Lost much more last night ... even the season premiere's second airing. I knew more of what to look for and thought it was interesting to hear Desmond say to Jack when they were running the stadium stairs that he was "training for a race around the world." So, it would seem to me that something happened while the was rushing around the globe that trapped him on the island. And Desmond seemed very amused that anyone would try to get off of the island on a raft.

The whole "Are you Him?" stuff with Locke had religous overtones (like alot of the stuff in Lost does.) Desmond is clearly waiting for the coming of some kind of savior. And it seems like the hatch might be rigged to self-destruct or something if the exact number sequence isn't entered when time runs out or when it is breached by an intruder.

I loved the scene where Kate ate the chocolate bar. Nice little touch.

Also, the previews for next week showed Hurley in the hatch. There must be a second entrance. Hurley can't possible fit down that shaft, can he?

I thought the scenes with Sawyer and Michael on the wreckage were okay. I hate sharks, so that creeped me out. I also liked the line, "What are you going to do? Splash me?" Ha ha ha!
batboy
I loved this week's episode, but I have to say first of all that I am sooo tired of Michael's angry man routine. Sure, he's upset about his son being taken away, but stop taking it out on hunky Sawyer.

The introduction of the hunters are really scary and takes a new twist for island life. Can't wait to find out more about that women prisoner and whether there are more survivors from the plane crash.

It really seemed like Jack almost cried when he saw Desmond. I still don't understand what happened with his wife, but it looks like still a very raw nerve. That or Matthew Fox is an incredible actor.
Alexie11
During this past Wednesday's episode --- if you look carefully, then you can see a flash of the rear tail section of the shark that swam under the raft before Sawyer swam over to the pontoon. It has the same swan logo/emblem as the Desmond's uniform & all the food containers in the underground pantry.
tbbucsalstott
I'm not sure why I'm thinking this, but the bars that are around the swan logo on Desmond's, well, EVERYTHING, look like the bars that are on the South Korean flag. Could this logo be the company logo of Sun's father's company?

On another board that I read, someone posted that when Jin runs out of the jungle rambling in Korean, that one of the words that he says is "infection."
Gaga4Gaby
I didn't catch Jin saying infection. Creepy! But with the emergence of the Others tonight and the question of "how many got sick?" finally getting some focus, I am really looking forward to tonight's episode - boy did those previews look good!! - and to the development of the plotline surrounding whatever mystery ailment infects the island.

Thank God (and ESPN) that the Braves play at four and there's no conflict in my television viewing schedule. biggrin.gif

I just saw that my local ABC affiliate is pre-empting "Lost" to show the Sox-Sox game. WTF?!

Check to see if they are running it later. I know that soemtimes when that happens here, the local affiliate will air the preempted show after midnight. They may also run it Saturday night or something.
Gaga4Gaby
Lost was good last night. So many surprises and now Jack and Locke are the duo destined to take over the hatch and press the button to save the world - fate and logic, yin and yang. Very interesting. I am intrigued though by the reports that Shannon's vision of the soaking wet Walt was saying "Don't push the button" backwards. So perhaps they shouldn't push the button? Of course, Jack and Locke don't know that. Not even Shannon knows what he was saying.

It would appear that the people who captured Sawyer, Jin, and Michael are not The Others - but the back half of the plane, no? Perhaps "Shaft" is Rose's husband? I laughed so hard when Sawyer called Ana Lucia "cupcake."

And how shocking was it to hear Jin speak a complete english sentence to end the previews?

I have to say, Locke is starting to annoy me. Watching his back story and seeing how he just buys into the whole "experiement," you know he's the type that likes Cool Aid. Anyway, I'm getting tired of him and I'm tired of how he's dragging down my man Jack.

I'm really confused about the "hunters." They really looked Polynesian, like they're from the island. If they really are from the plane, why do they have to be so mean? I knew something was up with that girl from the beginning.

I can't wait to see next week to see what prompts Jin to speak. I have to say, I'm really missing not seeing his wife, Sun, in these first few episodes. I love watching her. I'm getting tired of Kate too.

And I don't understand in the previews it looked like they were keeping the food a secret. Why? That's just so wrong. I guess we'll all find out soon.
Gaga4Gaby
I miss Sun, too. She's wonderful.

We don't know what it's been like for the back half of the plane's survivors. Maybe they've been more at the mercy of the Others or the island's security system or God knows what else on the island. Perhaps they reacted aggressively to protect themselves and take no chances with any strange people who show up. I could see developing a "first strike" mentality when there's danger at every turn.

Jack probably is still distrustful of the whole hatch situation and may not want to start handing out the food before they know it's safe. Of course, Kate could just say "I had a candy bar and it's fine," so who knows. Jack may not want people fighting over the food or the shower or whatever else is in the hatch ...
Gaga4Gaby
Well, Jin's english was only a dream/hallucination of Hurley's ... but Jin has quite the sexy voice, even when he's saying, "Have a cluckity cluck cluck day!" biggrin.gif

Good episode, but less crazy revelations than in the first few weeks. I'm wondering if the back half of the plane's survivors were decimated by the mystery illness? Or if they were hunted down by the Others? Or both!?

Kate totally missed the boat when she didn't offer to shower with Jack. Silly girl.
batboy
I was really irritated that ABC sunk so low as to use a dream in a preview, it really annoyed me. But you're right Gaga, it was made up by just how sexy Daniel Kim sounds without his accent. Hmmm, yummy.

I thought last night's episode was interesting in the fact that it raised the question of what's happening with the second group of airline survivors. There were what? 23, and now there's just a handful. So what happened? Sounds like hints of Lord of the Flies there and that this group was a bit more savage against each other. I'm so happy that Rose's husband is still alive. I just hope they get a reunion soon. I still don't know what's up with Michelle Rodriguez's character. I wonder if they'll do a back story on her and give us hints on why she's now such a controlling vicious operative.

By the way, I still can't stand Michael's character. The only angry man and yelling from the pit when no one's going to listen anyway, it's just so tiresome. I don't like how he wasn't supportive of Sawyer when he got pulled out first.

I see the writers are trying to play with a lot of social issues in these first few episodes. The whole situation of the second group being more brutal and the reflection of what happens when an angry mob takes control and the storyline about the food and the perception of what's fair and how to maintain everyone's happiness without it turning into a mob scene. It's really interesting. I just hope they don't fall to stereotypical conclusions.
Gaga4Gaby
My guess is that the back half of the plane's survivors were forced to be aggressive - they are clearly closer in proximity to The Others. Kill or be killed, maybe. Plus if one hatch is quarantined then they may all be ... so who knows what could have infected the people who moved into the second hatch, which is clearly not as well maintained as Desmond's.

In the preview for next week, someone says that we have "no idea what they [the Others] are capable of." The new survivors were probably hunted in some way ...

Real life scary situation for one of the castaways:

QUOTE
Lost star Josh Holloway and his wife, Yessica Kumula, were robbed at gunpoint in their Honolulu home on Wednesday morning. The intruder entered the couple's house, rousted them out of bed, stole cash and credit cards and then sped off in Holloway's Mercedes-Benz, which was found abandoned shortly afterwards. Local police have yet to release any details on the robbery.
Gaga4Gaby
Damn, that's brazen. Poor Sawyer! That must be freaky ... not only to be robbed, but to have someone wake you up to rob you. I'm glad he and his wife are physically okay, though.
CHIathlete
I enjoyed the episode last night. It was nice to finally see scenes with some of the characters they have neglected so far this season: Shannon, Sun, Claire and even Rose.

I am a bit puzzled why the Ana Lucia character is so mean and abrasive, even after she knows that Michael, Sawyer and Jin were on the same flight (you’d think she should be relived). I mean the other survivors from the tail section didn’t display that type of behavior?

I’m also sort of confused about the Bernard character (Rose’s husband)? I thought when they showed him last season (when Rose saw him and nobody else did), that he was dark skinned? The Bernard they showed last night seemed to be Caucasian and a different person altogether. Maybe I’m missing something?
Gaga4Gaby
I don't recall them ever showing her husband or even mentioning his name before last night. She was just looking off into the ocean and insisting he was alive.

I like how the writers/casting agent played with many people's natural assumtion that Rose would marry within her own race. All over the net there were people supposing that the black guy who was holding Sawyer, Jin, and Michael captive must be Rose's husband. That was my first thought and I read many theories to the same effect on other boards. But when Rose said her husband's name was Bernard to Hurley, I told a friend of mine that "Shaft," as Sawyer christened him, has some kind of accent and didn't really seem like a Bernard. When they got to the second hatch and that dorky white guy opened the door, I said to her, "THAT'S Bernard!" I was so pleased to be right.
Gaga4Gaby
Oh, and speaking of Sawyer's nicknames, when he called Ana Lucia "Rambina," I just laughed and laughed and laughed. biggrin.gif
batboy
It's obvious Ana Lucia is the alpha dog in the group of tail survivors.

That's terrible to hear about the real life news of Josh, who is my favorite hottie on the island. And being from Hawaii, I hate the islands getting a bad rap. I hope they find the guy, I mean, where can he go? He's bound to be somewhere on the island.

I, too, thought Rose's husband was "Shaft," and I was thinking, oooh, girl, Rose got her a hot young thing. But no, she got the professor. wink
CHIathlete
Well, I also love the fact that Bernard wasn't anything like what folks would expect, and that it's an inter-racial relationship - I SO hope they get reunited! I noticed that Libby is on the ABC cast list, but Bernard is not. hmmmm

I do recall though a scene from Sesaon 1, early on, that she was sitting alone by the ocean and saw him in the distance. Sort of like the time Jack saw his father.
