You should go JiP. Just think of all those wealthy gays you can rub shoulders (and other parts wink ) with.
And for $2500 you even get an escort! Ooops... read that again and it says parking escort.
You know, instead of watching on TV I really should have paid for a VIP ticket and gone. (And some last-minute tickets were available at a will-call window at the Art Museum. Dammit.)
The Freedom Ball prior to the concert had (according to the Phila. Daily News) "cocktails and a buffet of pasta, baked salmon and grilled vegetables," plus Rufus Wainwright performed (in addition to his 2-song performance at the concert on the parkway). The show was a big hit and drew a very large crowd -- I'm not sure if it was Live 8-sized but still was rather impressive.
Patti LaBelle's performance of "Lady Marmalade" featured 4 men brought on stage to sing and dance (a regular thing she does in her shows) with one of them being the Eagles' Dhani Jones (who also was on stage at Live 8 -- he's a concert whore!
And the cause of HIV-AIDS awareness and fundraising was promoted throughout the show with occasional pitches from co-hosts Wayne Brady and Bruce Vilanch (who later appeared in drag as "Betsy Ross"), a video on the Elton John AIDS foundation presented by Billie Jean King, a video presentation from Walter Cronkite and a 800 phone number for donations was flashed on the screen as well.
Sir Elton got huge applause and a rave review for his performance, and
he was also honored during a ceremony at Independence Hall, and had a section of a street near the William Way Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center re-named "Elton's Way."
