Did any of you watch the 2002 version of DOCTOR ZHIVAGO on PBS's MASTERPIECE THEATRE ? I really enjoyed it. The acting was superb and the Scottish actor HANS MATHESON was excellent in the title role. He not only has great acting ability and has a great voice but has incredable looks too. He is a big star in the U.K. and such a better actor than Colin Farrell. I hope Hans becomes a star in the U.S.

I missed it, but I will always hold dear sexy Omar Sharif as Yuri Zhivago, and the inimitably beautiful Julie Christie as Lara Antipova in David Lean's forgettably overwrought 1965 epic.

It was quite good and had several innovative and nice effects, as when Zhivago first sees Lara thru a cafe window and their images meld.* A much more woeful version than the movie, but such was life in those places and times and this version handled the complexities and filled in the gaps well.
BTW, are there any "Foyle's War" fans here? The episode aired the other night had a nicely-handled gay theme, involving Foyle's son and his fellow-pilot admirer. Am looking to tape and review this one.
BTW, Happy New Year, everyone! It was nice to see OSU win last night and I'm meeting some Cal friends when I return to SDiego tonite to celebrate their victory as well!

*Query to film buffs: this seemed to be too good to have been originally done only now. The closest analogous image I can think of is when the two raindrops merge into one while running down a windowpane in "The Corn Is Green." Has this ever "been done before?"

I am a huge FOYLE'S WAR fan. The episode you mentioned with the friend of Foyle's son being gay was the best episode so far. That series set during world war 2 is excellent. I watch very little American t.v. bar PBS. BBC AMERICA is one of my favorites. I remember when A and E was high quality. Now it is garbage like GROWING UP GOTTI.
