The Angels take a 1-0 lead. I guess rest is overrated. wink
Now the part of the playoffs I despise the most: when television dictates that we can't see both LCS games. Instead of the old 4 pm and 8 pm start times, both games tomorrow will start at 8 ET. So one game will be on Fox and the other on FX.

JOEINPHILLY you are rigt about the tv selection! My Dad now deceased, was a huge baseball fan (RED SOX) but stopped watching after the television market took control. Making the CUBS have night games etc! Why did the Angels have to play tonight? Because of television sponsorship! Yeah they won, but having to travel to Chicago w/ a 2 hour time differnce is just not right! America's game indeed!

Uh, Earth to Bill, TIVO's are a dime a dozen. It's not exactly like they're expensive, you know. They cost as much as someone's willing to spend, meaning if one wants to replace the hard drive in them with a larger one, tweak the software with customized modifications, then, yes, they'll run a bit more; otherwise, a DirecTV customer can get one for free.

Cards lead the NLCS 1-0...ALCS tied at one with help from what sure looks like a bad call by the home plate umpire. I switched back and forth early on, and then stuck with the AL game once the Cards opened up the lead in their game.
Mike Scioscia was asked if he felt the game was stolen from the Angels and he said "No, we didn't play well enough."

The catcher should've waited for the out call before he rolled the ball back to the mound. Even if it was a bad call he should know that has to see the umpire signal that the batter is out. S

Fox Cancels ALCS After Just Two Episodes
October 13, 2005 | Onion Sports
LOS ANGELES — Fox Entertainment president Gail Berman announced Thursday that the network is pulling the plug on ALCS, the new three-hour drama/comedy about two rival clubs competing for the coveted "pennant," just two shows into its run.
"This uninspired series featured a cast of uninteresting characters, a hackneyed plot, and more boring narration than actual meaningful dialogue," Berman said. "We tried to find an audience on Tuesdays, then on Wednesdays, and we were prepared to move its time slot to Friday nights or Saturday afternoons before ultimately realizing that the series had zero potential."
Television experts cited several other possible reasons for the early cancellation, such as the overly expensive sets and costumes, the show's subject matter, and the fact that the series' projected breakout character—a brash, outspoken black man named Carl Everett—tested very poorly with audiences. Fox remains optimistic about its other fledgling program, NLCS, but critics say the series has "very little chance" of making it past seven episodes.

That was a "Chicago style" win, as in Doug Eddings playing Mayor Daley delivering Cook County to JFK.
It also enabled Crede to redeem his dumbass baserunning boner.
Scioscia was just trying to keep the umps from being pissed if he blamed the loss on them.

So every time an umpire gives the same exact strike 3 call and you happen to catch the ball before it skips the dirt (like every replay I've seen) you should tag the batter?
Its ridiculous to blame Paul for the that. The umpire is clearly at fault in this situation, and every baseball columnist and expert is on the Angels side in this situation.
On Baseball Tonight, they reviewed the umprire's calls and they showed that he had the same strike three call for every strikeout. That one on A.J. was no different. And Paul said there was no verbal signage that the umpire thought the ball had hit the dirt.
The call was bad. The excuse given was worse. He should publicly apologize.

Hardly. As more of them view closer shots of the pitch, and realize what umpire mechanics are, they're changing their minds. Several of the so-called "experts" today have admitted their change of opinions on this. Even I changed my mind when I saw what turned out to be the decisive view of the ball hitting the ground.

You know, I wanted to wait until I've seen the play about five hundred more times before I responded to this. I've read columns on ESPN, the New York Times, USA Today....where are these people you're talking about coming from? Your neighbors? You can clearly see the ball in Paul's glove.
Can't you just accept that the umpire blew a call? The guy made a mistake. End of story.

At first, this was my position, but after further review, I agree with others who also changed their mind. No mistake was made on the ruling, since the ball wasn't caught after all. End of story.

Of course, all this could have been avoided if only Josh Paul had tagged Pierzynski, whatever Eddings had done.
On a similar note, there's a move afoot on local sports talk to have fans at the game tonight eschew thunder sticks and rally monekys and instead show their support for the Angels by tucking their fingers into their palms, cocking their elbows, and pumping their fists. Strike three, you're out. Anything that rids us of the rally monkey is a good thing by me.

Well, there are some questionable calls in the NL series. That is, Tony LaRussa and Jim Edmunds have been tossed for questioning balls and strikes.
My question is: Jim Edmunds was tossed and a pinch hitter had to come in with a 3-2 count. Will that AB count (for statistics purposes) for Edmunds or the pinch hitter?
-------------
Edit: just noticed that John Rodriguez is credited with an AB (0 for 1), which seems kind of unfair since he came in with a 3-2 count.
Question 2: There are stats kept for # of pitches seen (ie. pitches taken for balls, swinging strikes, taken strikes). Since Edmund's AB doesn't 'count' as an AB, would the pitches he took in the AB count on those statistics?
I guess this is similar to the case where a guy is in the middle of an AB and a runner is caught stealing for the 3rd out. The AB doesn't count as an AB. (But the pitches thrown would presumably count in the pitchers pitch (and balls/strikes) count.

The pitch count was inherited by his replacement, Rodriguez, who finished the at-bat, so they do count as pitches on the pitcher's record. How they would count on the hitter's record for those really arcane stats like "Edmonds is 4 for 8 when swinging at the third pitch of an at-bat on a Friday in June when it rained that morning but not the day before" I'm not sure. wink
I was amazed at that double play the Astros turned to end the game -- it seemed like such a slowly hit ball that I figured the game was tied. And if it had been, what a momentum-turner it would've been for the series after they allowed Larry Walker to get to third base.
As I write this the White Sox are 3 outs away from the World Series...I can't see them blowing a 3-run lead here.
