Looks like Brokeback Mountain will take home another award. It's up for Best Picture (Wide Release) against Capote, The Family Stone, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Rent.

Best Picture (Limited Release) nominees are Transamerica, Mysterious Skin, Beautiful Boxer, Saving Face and Walk on Water.

Complete List of Nominees

Who votes on these things? Is there some kind of "academy," is it a "people's choice," or what? The categories are so diverse--movies, TV, music, newspapers, magazines, advertising, comic books, theatre in NY & LA (I guess other places don't count)--I wonder how they came up with the nominees or how the voters can judge/view such diverse media.

And why is there no category for websites? Surely Outsports.com deserves to be nominated for something as a positive and influential media voice.

There are also Spanish-language nominees.

I wish I knew, Canmark; I searched the site to try to figure out who makes the call here, but found nothing.

I was disappointed the episode "Among the Few" from "Foyle's War" on PBS didn't merit consideration. Perhaps when you look at what did you'll understand why:

OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUAL EPISODE (in a series without a regular gay character)

"Alien" Law & Order: SVU (NBC)
"Best Friends" Cold Case (CBS)
"Pilot" My Name Is Earl (NBC)
"Someone's in the Kitchen with Daddy" What I Like About You (The WB)
"Transitions" Without a Trace (CBS)

Like I said, disappointing.

I've had some limited dealings with GLAAD and found them to be a bunch of autocrats. They're just as secretive sometimes of the way they do things than the media they're criticizing. I wouldn't be surprised if the winners are just selected by a group of their "top leadership" one weekend.

Wherever transparency does not exist, there's a reason why.

The only thing about the voting I could find is this, the last line in their media release: "To ensure accuracy, the certified public accounting firm of Leslie, Engell & Associates graciously certifies all voting results for the GLAAD Media Awards."

GLAAD's latest project: Network Responsibility Index, "a first-of-its-kind report that maps the quantity, quality and diversity of images of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people on network television." ABC came out as the winner, thanks to shows like Brothers & Sisters and Ugly Betty.

As mentioned on the Jock Talk blog, Cyd was in attendance at the GLAAD Media Awards in NYC. Not only was he there, but he was walking the red carpet amongst the luminaries (Cynthia Nixon, Alan Cumming, Sigourney Weaver, Sandra Bernhard, Rosie Perez, Jay Manuel, LZ Granderson and Michael Urie, etc.). Who were you wearing, Cyd? wink.gif
