The topic regarding the Mets fielding woes got me curious. It seems to me there are many more errors than there used to be. Yesterday, there were 15 games played. Some interesting stats:
27 total errors committed in those games.
Only 3 errorless games, and only 14 of 30 teams playing were errorless.
Red Sox had 4, followed by Cubs and Braves with 3 apiece.
Everyone loves to rant about the lack of quality pitching and Baseball Tonight highlights "Web Gems" nightly, but is defense also declining? Or are the official scorers calling tougher games? Also, who are these official scorers? Are they umpires, sports writers or what?

I've asked the same question. I don't think the official scorers are calling it harder, quite the contrary, I'm afraid. Fielding has declined.
Another explanation for the number of errors could be that players are taking more risks with their throws than they used to. Certainly Nomar, with his 95mph arm, always throws to first, and some of his errors may be worth it given the decent success-failure ratio --although, admittedly, some of his throws are idiotic, pure showmanship.
In the Red Sox Yankees game that I watched last week, Jeter made two fantastic gets, but couldn't put the man out at first because he lacks the arm to do it, and his lobs arrived on the money, but late.
The Red Sox catchers hardly ever make errors on the throw to second; they just never get the man out.
Errors are not necessarily a sign of poor defense.
You don't judge a base stealer merely by the number of times he's caught stealing.
