HALLELUJAH! Not even Alfonzo's signing with SF can dilute the Mets' long-delayed shedding of hundreds of unproductive outs a year...
And lo, there was joy in the meadow of Flushing... (espn.com)

This is the third major piece of good news for the Giants in their bid to repeat as NL champions. First, they got Felipe Alou as the manager. Then they signed Ray Durham. Now, the best news of all: they signed Edgardo Alfonso. Alfonso did the impossible: play and New York yet remain under-rated.
As far as getting rid of Rey Ordonez, this is a perfect example of what the great Whitey Herzog used to call "addition by subtraction." This is the best trade for the Mets since they got Mike Piazza for Preston Wilson, a six-pack of diet Coke and a used jockstrap.
The media are saying that the Mets made the trade to dump salary. Hardly. The Mets are going to pay $4.25 million of Ordonez's $6.25 million salary. And this trade was hardly to get Russ Johnson. This is, pure and simple, a move simply to get Ordonez off the roster. The fact that the D-Rays will pay $2 million of Ordonez's salary is a bit of bonus. But it's not nearly the bonus of getting Ordonez off the team.

Finally for the first time in his career Rey Ordonez will be hitting 9th.
WHERE HE BELONGS!!
He should never have been in the national league this long because he and the pitcher who would hit behind him were a 1-2 delight for all national league pitchers.
