This business with Julian Tavarez and his "dirty hat" is really stupid.

What do you think?
Joe in Philly
If he had pine tar on the cap and that's against the rules, he deserves what he gets. Especially since he's one of the players who have displayed anti-gay tendencies (i.e. calling people "faggots").
fantomas
I love my Cardinals but I agree with JiP.
jubjub
Why did the ump let Tavarez throw his hat in the stands?

It was a bunch of bullsh*t .
William1865
Tavarez? Didn't he have a song on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack?

Yeah, that's the way to face prejudice. He gets what he deserves just because he made an anti-gay remark once?

I have to admit I haven't heard all the details about this one, but all the bits and pieces I've put together make for a bizarre story. If he actually was trying to get away with using pine tar on the ball, did he think he could put it on his cap and get away with it? Not bright....

Any anti-gay jackass deserves every bit of punishment he or she gets for any reason.

...I just came across this thread on JT. Let me tell you, he's a piece of work!

When he played with the CUBS, he lived in the New York building where a couple of my co-workers also live in. Tonya, who is young and VERY cute and very attractive (and also married), lived on the same floor as Julian. JT, knowing that my friend Tonya was married, would constantly pay her a visit and ask her out on dates, to parties at his place, give her free tickets to CUBS games....Tonya said he was quite the 'pig'. Apparently he also made quite a few homophobic remarks and racial slurs in their conversations as well.

I think the Phillies should acquire him. He and Todd Jones would get along so well. rolleyes.gif

It isn't logical to me that he should be fined for a dirty hat..... and whether or not he once made comments about gay people doesn't affect my opinion in any way. People say things - they make mistakes. Let's leave it in the past. It doesn't have anything to do with the dirty hat incident..... which, if you ask me, that whole scenario was really stupid. Julian had a dirty hat - so what. That doesn't prove ANYTHING.

And now he's being fined $10,000 because he hit at Bagwell? That's really lame.

It's not that the hat was dirty. It's that there was pine tar, which is an illegal substance that a pitcher can use to make the ball move so it's more difficult to hit. Pitchers are not allowed to have illegal substances on their hats. If he did, then he deserves to be punished.

And as far as his being anti-gay, he made bigoted comments and never apologized (or never made a serious apology, like so many other athletes). Maybe it doesn't affect you, but it OFFENDS ME. So I frankly am THRILLED that his acting like a jackass the other day led to his broken hand. And he deserved to be fined because he deliberately threw at a player after he gave up a home run.
ilovetavarez
Last I heard, there was no proof that there was pine tar on his hat.

Well I don't know anything about his anti-gay comments, but I'm sorry you were offended. Julian may have apologized after calling this person a "faggot". He may have even apologized to this person in private, I don't know. It's not really any of my business.

As for the comment about Julian acting like a "jackass" the other day... it sounds to me like you have a major grudge against Tavarez that started with his faggot comment.

He didn't hurt anyone but himself when he had his outburst in the dugout. He's obviously a passionate player - which I LIKE. He cares about the game, and wants to do well. I respect that.

And for you to be "thrilled" that he broke his hand? To me, that's extremely wrong.

AND pitchers throw at hitters all the time. You can't pick and choose which ones deserve to be fined, and which instances are overlooked. That will never make sense to me.

He didn't call a person a faggot. He said it to reporters who asked him about Giants fans booing him during a game when he pitched for the Cubs. This is a quote from an article here on the Outsports site:

QUOTE
``Why should I care about the fans?'' Tavarez said after the game. ``They're a bunch of ass****s and faggots here.''

Tavarez, who played three years with the Giants, was roundly criticized for his remarks by the media, Cubs president Andy MacPhail and his manager, Don Baylor.

``Did Tavarez understand what he was saying, the way he said it so calmly?'' asked San Francisco Chronicle columnist Gwen Knapp. ``He spent three years as a Giant. Surely, he knows that San Francisco is the gay capital of America. If someone wants to use the fashionable excuse that his remarks were `ill-considered,' Tavarez will have to explain how, with so little
consideration, he got his demographics right.''
He apologized the next day--at his manager's request. So I'm going to hold on to my grudge until I'm convinced that he is sincerely apologetic. If you can't handle that, I suggest you find a website where you can hear nothing but happy talk about Julian.

And when it's obvious that he was deliberately throwing at a player's head, like it was in this case, he absolutely should be punished.
Ms. de Blazer
He didn't hurt anyone but himself when he had his outburst in the dugout.

Excuse me! When a player in the midst of an National League Championship Series throws a temper tantrum and breaks his hand, he is hurting his team.
Hopefully Tony LaRussa, whom I like and respect, will get rid of this a-hole ASAP.

Brittany, should we alert the authorities that Tav has a stalker? smile.gif Please tell me you didn't register for the Outsports message boards today as a straight woman because you googled and found negative comments about Tavarez.

Didn't look like he hurt the team too badly yesterday when he pitched perfectly and became the WINNING PITCHER for the Cards.

Yes, I am STRAIGHT. And yes, I was Googling Julian Tavarez and came across a negative topic about him on what appears to be a gay message board. I figured I'd register anyway to stand up for him. I don't care if it's a gay message board or not, I'm going to post to let my opinions known about Julian. No, I'm not a stalker. Just a fan.

I guess defending a guy these days warrants you the title "stalker".

Yes, Brittany, Googling for negative comments on a baseball player and registering just to talk about him would put you in the potential-stalker category.

By the way, abilities aside, Tavarez is a first-rate a$$, and you're definitely in the minority in thinking otherwise. Even Cards fans I know think he is.

Thanks for playing!

LMAO... so I'm a potential stalker because I was Googling my favorite player for stats? That's ridiculous. While Googling him, I came across this message board - I wasn't LOOKING for it. Believe me, as a straight female, I have better things to do with my time than to look for gay message boards with bitter men bashing Tavarez.
Joe in Philly
You say you have better things to do, and yet you keep posting here, making rude comments such as saying we're "bitter."

Funny, I ddidn't realize we stumbled into www.julians-bimbo-groupies.com.
ilovetavarez
What's funny is that you "men" have such bad attitudes. I thought this particular group of people would have been more sedate and nice.

Yes, I do have better things to do, but I'm not about to just quit standing up for my favorite pitcher or myself.

I'm not a groupie. I'm not a bimbo. Actually, by calling a straight female a bimbo, you sound like Jack the Homo on Will & Grace. It's so typical of a gay "male" to think of straight females as bimbos. rolleyes.gif

Now you are stereotyping, making assumptions about a certain group of people.

Brittany, let me assure you that there are several men on this board who are quite sedate and nice. In fact, I have to run off to my afternoon high tea appointment with my friends Jack and Karen. And later on I plan to rush home to my mom's where we're spending a beautiful evening knitting sweaters for the handsome young delivery man from UPS. Just a little note for your edification---gay males are men, not "men."

And I would describe someone who chooses ilovetavarez as her online moniker to be a groupie or a bimbo.
