The Senate approved legislation to create a federal agency to oversee professional boxing. Jon McCain, who wrote the bill, has criticized fight promoters for taking advantage of boxers and castigated state boxing commissions for conflicts of interests & for not ensuring the objectivity of judges. The legislation would establish a U.S. Boxing Administration within the Labor Dept. It would license pros, promoters, managers, and sanctioning organizations. Under the bill, fighters would be tested for ifectious diseases and medical records would be maintained on all boxers.
