"I want all of you fat, gay homos who don't like the show to take the advice (of the promo). If you're fat or you're gay or both, don't listen."
Hard to believe radio talk show hosts would still be talking this way, but they are. The latest is from a sports talk show host in Albuquerque, NM. Take a look at the story and drop the guy a line, if you so desire. I'm sure he'd love to hear from many of us.
Morning talk show spits out gibes about gays

I read the article, Cyd. It sounds like Dennis Glasgow is quite a bitter man. I guess I would be bitter, too, if I were 37 and my career in radio talk had taken me to a gig on the 23rd ranked station in the hot bed of radio, Albuquerque. (Please no offense to any of the NM outsporters). Sounds like he's using shock talk to try to boost his career. What an idiot.....

What's the phrase?
We hate in others what we most fear in ourselves?

I especially enjoyed Glasgow's warning against fat people listening to the station. Perhaps we fat folks are the reason it's the 23rd-rated station in Albuquerque--our immense gravity bends the radio waves all outta whack.
SteveIN, one of the fat, gay guys.

From what I've seen of most DJ's, the pot probably should refrain from calling the kettle fat!

Many DJs have no real opinions, rather they just try to incite. Reactions (i.e., ratings) are all they're looking for.

It is my opinion that this DJ's rants and raves are shock radio at its best. He is doing this to start controversy and hopefully to bolster his ratings. I think the radio station will allow him to do it as long as he generates advertising dollars for them. If his ratings start to slip, believe me he is out of there. Now, do I find his comments offensive? Hell, yeah! As a gay man, an overweight man, and a person of color, I don't enjoy people commenting about my physical appearance. I don't live in denial and I am quite aware that people make judgements about me all the time, some folks make these comments to my face but most comments are made outside my hearing range. So be it. I know what is inside of me and in my heart. The best thing about this country is that everyone has a right to express their opinion. I think his views should be challenged by the people who actually listen to his radio show. What this is really about is what people will tolerate, his show is a reflection of himself, his crew, and the people who listen to show and take in his negative view of the world. I wonder what his opinions are of issues he can't talk about like race and gender because he knows if he expressed negative opinions about that he would be fired. If I lived in the area, this is what I would do; I would listen to this guy a few times, so I would have a personal sense of what he was about. I would write down all of his advertisers and then I would try not to partronize the local advertisers. I realize that may not have a negative effect on the radio show, but it is the power that I have to express my displeasure. Okay, I have gone on long enough! I am going back in my bear den.

I read the quotes. I think I would be more offended if this idiot weren't so bad at what he does. I heard better insults during recess in the third grade. Conventional wisdom would imply that radio station owners get a little upset when radio hosts tell the listeners not to listen. It would seem a little against self interest. If he's hoping that telling everyone that he doesn't want fat gays listening, would encourage others to listen, he's gonna have to get better material.

I was under the impression that they wanted neither fats nor gays to listen ... not just fat gays. So all you buff gay dudes and gym bunnies: not welcome. World championship sumo wrestlers or vacationing Wisconsinites? Take your radio listening elsewhere.

Here's the funniest part to me:
[quote] After the program went its first two hours without a phone call from a listener,
Even at points when there was nothing to talk about in Philadelphia sports (such as, this summer) the sports station's morning show never went 2 hours without a single phone call. This is obviously a boring show with losers for hosts and few listeners.
