Full Version: RE: Outdoor LaCrosse?

Yeap, that's a question mark.

I've not had time to do the research on the internet, but has anyone heard of this? I was at the local sporting goods store buying some stuff and there was a huge poster with Colorado's newest team..."Colorado Outlaws." I saw the lacrosse stick and became excited (I suppose that's Freudian) and as I read the poster, it said something along the lines of 'outdoor lax team.'

Outdoor? Okay, so they play outdoors. But what I'm wondering, are there any rules changes? Or is it the added excitement that bad weather might cancel or the boys might have to play in the mud?

So had anyone heard of 'outdoor lacrosse?' When I was in school, that's how we always played it anyhows, but a pro team?

Our current team, the Mammoths, obviously, play indoors at the Pepsi Center. Have the rules been changed? I figured I'd ask while I was here.

Thanks for your input ahead of time!

And peace,
Roo

Your Online Guide to the Rules of Lacrosse

Official 2006 NCAA Rulebook

In Colorado, Kent in Denver is the high school powerhouse. Every summer, there is the Vail Lacrosse Shootout and the CSU Men's Lacrosse Ram Camp, formerly the CSU High Altitude Lacrose Camp, at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Two weeks ago, the University of Denver visited Baltimore to play UMBC, the University of Maryland at Baltimore County, a satellite campus of the University of Maryland.

Yes, I've heard of it. And I'll be there, of course.

Actually, we've had a few exhibition games here in Denver. The Outdoor Lacrosse All-Star Game was here last summer, and drew quite well considering the utter lack of advertising. (I think it was over 10,000.) It was there that they announced that Denver was getting a team this summer. Although many of us knew that it was probably in the cards, we cheered, anyhow.

Lacrosse purists (and yes, there are such things) would consider you and me backwards, because to them, the indoor game is a corruption of the "proper" outdoor one. You can read the helpful links provided by twin, but here are some quicky things you'll notice (without going into any detail at all).

* The pace is slower. To be simplistic about it, outdoor lacrosse is like soccer the way indoor lacrosse is like hockey. I don't think it's boring by any means, but it's certainly a different vibe.
* Substitution only during time-outs.
* The field is a lot larger, and you'll notice some players with longer sticks.
* The goalie isn't padded anywhere near as much as in indoor. As such, the goalie saves a lot fewer shots.
* A goal can be worth two points under certain circumstances.

Oh, and for the record, our indoor team is the Mammoth, not Mammoths. Mammoth is singular AND plural.

I feel bad that I have not made a Mammoth game yet. And, I have noticed the huge banner at Invesco for the Denver Outlaws. I just went to the team website and signed up for the newsletter. I don't have much exposure to lacrosse, but when I have caught a game or part of a game on TV, it looks like a cool sport.

This is awesome, thanks guys! Looks like I have some reading to do before I head to one of these games. That and convincing the better half that we have to go. Otherwise I'll be stuck watching ALT!

Peace and thanks once more, keep posting!

When you said "outdoor lacrosse," I thought you meant in general. I see now you meant a particular team and league. I don't know anything about two-point goals or shot clocks.

I hadn't noticed you were from Colorado Springs. All you have to do to see lacrosse is walk across town.

Air Force Mens' Lacrosse

The Air Force lacrosse team (6-5, 1-0) continues its four-game homestand this week with a pair of contests. First, the Falcons will host Bucknell on Friday, April 14, at 3:00 p.m. Then, Air Force wraps up the weekend against league foe Notre Dame, currently ranked ninth nationally, on Sunday, April 16, with a 2:00 p.m. contest.
You're in luck. Bucknell comes to town this afternoon. Every year, Bucknell beats a team ranked much higher. Last year, they surprised Navy, which had been second-ranked at the time, handing them their first defeat of the season.

March 12, 2005 - Bucknell Men's Lax Stuns Second-Ranked Navy, 8-7 in Overtime

This year's victim was Maryland, in two overtimes at College Park. That was big.

March 14, 2006 - Bucknell Men's Lacrosse Stuns No. 1 Maryland 7-6 in Double OT

I guess it's the George Mason of lacrosse.

Friday's game in Colorado Springs will be televised, too. After playing AF on Friday, Bucknell will play Denver on Sunday. Bucknell-UD may be a better game than AF-Notre Dame (or it may not), but it's a sixty-mile drive one way to get there. ($9 to see Denver play? It's only $6 to get into Byrd Stadium at Maryland.)

Well, Frank, tonight's the final regular season home game for the Mammoth, and we're looking to break an attendance record. Why not come down and watch?

Yes, I do on occasion head over to the AFA to see their games, sometimes just going to see what's playing.

And Lexington, I do apologize, you are right, it is singular and plural.

Thanks for all this info. Nice board you all have here, everyone's been really friendly.

Peace out,
Roo
