Saw a headline in the New York Times sports page today to the effect of "Walters wins Pro-cycling but McCrae is still US Champion." The event was the First Union (ex-Corestate?, ex-Mellon Bank?, ex...) bicycle competition this week in Philadelphia.
The article went on to talk about Chann McCrae being the first US Team member across the line without ever again so much as mentioning Mark Walters winning performance with a team composed of Europeans.
With friends like us you guys in Canada certainly don't need enemies eh.

Did Mellon ever sponsor this race? As far as I know only CoreStates/First Union has...and next year I guess it'll be named Wachovia (as will the FU Center) once they've officially changed the corporate name?
Quality sports reporting by the NY Times, eh?

Can't find any references Joe but I think it use to be the Carnegie-Mellon, then the Corestates, then the First Union as each fish swallowed the next not-necessarily-smaller one.
I freely admit I can't keep up. Whatever happened to tradition? Why can't it just be the USPro Bicycle Race or the Philadelphia Bike Race. Money talks and the rest of us stumble along behind I guess..?
