Obligatory pec pic. That's Michael on the right.

Who is this guy? A swimmer, obviously, but I've never heard of him...

Today's "top." There was a picture of him here months ago showing his trunks falling off.

Michael Phelps is a 17 y/o high schooler. From Baltimore. This should be of special interest to Joe from Philly, as it were.

And one of the best swimmers in the world.

Set a World Record last night in the 400 IM, arguably the most grueling event there is.

And he set an Amercian Record in the 200 IM Monday night.

And an American Open Record in the 200m Fly Wedneesday night.

All this in a pool that is notorious for being slow.

He was 5th in the 200m Fly in the Sydney Olympics -- at age 15.

And he set the World Record in the 200m Fly in July 2001.

I believe, however, he has already signed with Speedo which means he would not be able to swim competitively for any NCAA college.

PS Is there a way for one to edit a message one has already posted?

Click on the notepad with the little pencil at the top of your post, next to the quote (" ") marks. You can also link a URL by clicking on the URL button below the box you write your message in.

I think your Michael Phelps is the same as my "Mark Phelps" whose name I have corrected at my post in the "Hot Jock Talk" section: Floating like a butterfly.

I'm also from Maryland originally and noticed Michael's accomplishment, partly for that reason.

Looks like we may have our own "Thorpedo."

Hmm, what works with Phelps?

Thanks for the pic of Phelps, the edit and the intructions, Sportinlife. The pic really is beautiful. Amazing wingspan, eh?

As for Thorpedo ... from what I've heard, Ian's more likely to be one of ours than Phelps is. But who knows about these things. Nor do I know if Phelps would fit in Thorpe's shoes.

But I'll take a good Fly Guy over a Freestyler any day. And Phelps not only Butterflies, he does it all. What a kid.

That wasn't quit what I meant by "we". I was thinking "we" as in the USA instead of Australia or some other country.

I too have heard the rumors - something about Thorpe and a dutch swimmer at the Sydney Olympics was it? - but I don't know enough to say more. Do you? I think the size 17's get people's imagination going a bit.

As for the assist with the system: "de nada amigo"

Mr. Phelps last night set an Amercian record in the 100m Fly (51.88) for, I believe, his fourth win of the championships.

Sportinlife: I shouldn't have implied you meant anything other than what you did by "us." I knew better -- was just making the old "play on words." I suppose that's where a smiley face would have come in handy. I just have trouble using them.

One of the Baltimore television stations had someone on discussing the Washington 2012 Olmypic bid, last week.

One the the newspeople went to the USOC website and found this bit by Michael Phelps.

Shaving your back and behind your knees.

Jockpop,
I have to disagree about the 400IM "arguably being the hardest event in swimming". As a former 400IMer in college (not by choice, I just happened to be good at it), it wasn't all that bad 'cause you were chaning strokes and therefore muscle groups every 100. Now Phelps's other main event the 200fly, that race sucks!
jockpop
Otter: you have a fair argument there, but cheez, follwing a 100 fly with a 100 back (which kills me anyway) + a 100 breast and finishing with a punishing 100 free sprint? At least in a 2 fly you only have to go half as far, and less than half as long. In either case, Phelps wins for pursuing the most grueling event. You care to share where you swam the event (be it school, conference area, whatever)? [I actually only took up swimming @ 8 years ago in a serious way -- and only last year hooked up with a masters program -- of course, that's b/c there was NO masters program here before then. What a great sport.]

PS Does anyone know how to link to the shot of Phelps losing his trunks?
