This would have been a huge story 20 years ago. But with fewer and fewer people caring about horse racing, it'll be interesting to see what happens. There is still alot of money at stake regardless of declining general public interest.
Derby Controversy???

So that one picture is the only one that seems to depict something in the jockey's hand...according to some people. It seems like much ado over nothing.

I used to be an avid watcher of horse racing since I lived in NJ 2 miles from a track. But when most of the country doesnt have access to it or can even bet, nobody is going to care unless its because of transplanted people.
Case in point, my mother lives in NC. The local station decided that it was better to show breaking news of a tornado watch (which happens daily in the summer in most of the US Id think) instead of the 2 minute race. Well, they got so much backlash from people complaining about it, the president of the station had to get on the air and actually publically apologize. How often would it go that far for a news station to apologize about anything?

I just saw the pic and subsequently the video of the finish. The picture was snapped as the Jockey was spinning the riding crop around in his hand after the race had already been won. There was a shadow where he was lifting his fingers to change the position of the grip/handle. This just goes to show how media types will take a moment in time out of context. I hope that the jockey sues for slander and wins!
