ONTHESNOW BREAKING NEWS: World Cup champion skier Regine Cavagnaud of France, has died just two days after slamming into a German coach on a training course in Austria. Cavagnaud’s respirator was turned off today after tests showed her brain had ceased to function, according to the Associated Press. As we reported here this morning, Cavagnaud was hurtling down the course at 40 mph Monday when Markus Anwander, a German team coach crossed into her path. Her brain was functioning when she entered the clinic, but swelling compounded the injuries. Andwater underwent spinal surgery and no one can say if he will recover. The accident was apparently caused when the French and German teams, training together, failed to set up a joint radio frequency. Cavagnaud would have been a medal contender in Utah. –Craig Altschul, Editor
