... are in Milwaukee for this weekend's US National Gymnastics Championship. Just thought I'd let y'all know in case there are any gymnastics fans out there. The women just had prelims yesterday (Annia Hatch leads followed by Postell and Vise) and the men start today.

In case you guys need more motivation to check it out...

eek! eek! Holy crap those are some hot pictures! eek! eek!

You know, there is no reason in the world for those guys to train shirtless, except to show of their bods. Not that I'm complaining! When I was in gymnastics for 11 years (in the 70's/early 80's), no one trained shirtless, neither at the local level or at the training sessions for a big national meet. Some things change for the better.
ChaseTheSun
Yeah, I thought it was funny that they all train shirtless, too. I'm sure it's partly a macho thing, just showing off and stuff. If one guy has to do pommels without his shirt on, then they all have to do it, right?

Nice contribution Chase! Thanks for the great pictures and welcome aboard!

Outstanding pics Chase!....too bad we can't see more of these gymnasts on TV -- you'd think with all of the regional sports networks on the air now that gymnastics would get more publicity than it does....maybe with the introduction of the CSTV network (College Sports TV -- kudos to DirecTV for addding that to their programming pkg) last month that we'll get to enjoy seeing more college gymnasts in action.

They definitely have THE HOTTEST bodies of any athletes on the planet (and the fact that they're all under 5'10'' or so doesn't hurt either tongue.gif -- I admittedly have a bias in that area being 5'9'' myself)....any Outsporters in Wisconsin planning on attending the competition this weekend?....any additional pics of these toned adonis' would always be appreciated. smile.gif
ChaseTheSun
Ha, ha, I'm glad you guys are enjoying the pictures! Aside from that, I really am a big gym fan (and truthfully I'm a bigger fan of the women than the men), but anything to get some attention for the sport.

Gamecock, there's gonna be even more gym coverage this year than normal because the Worlds Championship is in Anaheim this year. So if you're just watching for "aesthetic" reasons, you ain't seen nothing until the big boys from Europe get here. Yes, that includes Sexy Alexei. And the boys from Canada ain't looking so bad these days either.
JC
Why doesn't gymnastics get more coverage from the media? It's always a big draw at the Olympics, but it disappears for four years in between. Aesthetics aside, I enjoy watching gymnastics for the sheer WOW factor--no other sport has people performing so many things that look physically impossible. Not enough American stars, I guess.

So Chase, how do you feel about Annia leading after Day 1? With Schwikert in 6th??? Also, am I the only one who noticed that three (four if you count Terin Humphrey) out of the top six senior women are women of color? It's about time!
Tim
Oh Great,another page I HAVE to bookmark. tongue.gif smile.gif
Thanks Chase,it's a dirty job but someone has to do it. biggrin.gif

JC--

After the success of the women's team in 1996, there was actually a substantial increase in gymnastics coverage on TV-- lots of exhibitions and "pro-competitions." But during the last Olympic quad, unfortunately our girls didn't fare so well, and we experienced the worst international showing in decades. Needless to say, media coverage and fan interest when out the window.

Our girls are working really hard though, and critics will tell you we have our best shot in history to win a team gold in Anaheim this year. Our men aren't doing so bad either.

Jaydeenyc--

What about Annia? She rocks vault. But on the other events, she's okay. Nothing special. She's definitely top 3 material, but she wasn't my pick to be leading after prelims. Schwikert has been injured all season. It's amazing she's even here. Honestly, with the powers that be-- i.e. Marta Karolyi-- chances are both will be named to the Worlds team so it almost makes this competition a moot point. Personally I still think Postell or Kupets is going to win. Now, Terin. AWESOME! I wanna know why she got such low scores. The girl should be winning everything. As far as I'm concerned, she can be our sole representative in Anaheim. Love her.

As far as diversity goes, we've been really awesome. In Ghent 2001, we had two women of African-American descent and two women of Asian-American descent. And two whiteys (ha, ha, just kidding). There's also a black girl on the Ukrainian team, something you don't see everyday. It's nice to see gymnastics isn't a racially exclusive sport.
Rob
Thanks Chase for the link. Did you check out the picture of Steven McCain? He's the one doing the iron cross and I'm not sure what happened, but he needed to "rearrange" his package.

The finals of this event are on this weekend on NBC. The men are on Saturday at 2:00 Eastern, 11:00 here in the Pacific. I'm not into the women, but they are on Sunday at 3:00 Eastern, 12:00 Pacific.

Damn, I'm going to have to try to get into the World Championships in Anaheim.

first of all, yes they are all hot.

But regardig why U.S. mens gymnastics disappear between the olympics.... It's because despite their hottie status, they all pretty much suck compared to the russians, ukranians, the belarussians etc. and the US TV audience is not composed exclusively of gay horny men. wink
Rob
ung, I agree with you that Americans love a winner and the USA Men have not been on the level of the Russians and other Eastern Europeans. Maybe one reason is because there are so few men's college gymnatics programs left. I think the women are more popular because America fell in love with Olga Korbut, Nadia and a bunch of other 14 and 15 year olds with braces (go figure) and advertisers took notice. The number of gay men watching men's gymnastics is not a large enough demographic for the networks to sell advertising.

Chase -

I watching and taping, and checking results online, and I cannot believe how bad the choreography on women's floor is (Postell is a great gymnast and tumbling is awesome with great soft landings, but WHAT was she doing in between passes?) Vise was awesome on bars, with great extension and flexibility.
ChaseTheSun
Rob-

Yeah, saw that pic of McCain and noticed he was poking through a little. Poor guy. I don't know why Inside Gymnastics chose to use that picture... If I had to drool over one of the guys, I'd have to choose Todd Thornton. There's a better picture of him on that website. He's just a cutie.

jaydeenyc-

Okay, saw the TV coverage. Women's floor choreo has been bad for a really long time. Postell's routine is universally reviled by gymnastics fans. But Humphrey and Vise were incredible. Actually Vise was downright gorgeous. Too bad she can't tumble worth a damn. Speaking of Vise, her bars were great, but I thought she was way overscored on beam. A 9.750? Ridiculous. Memmel and Humphrey were much better, and they didn't even crack a 9.6.
