Full Version: Royals/White Sox game: what happened?

I didn't get all of the details, but I was watching the Northwest Sports Report on FSN, and they reported an attack on the first base coach of the KC Royals, by a shirtless father and son team who knocked him to the ground and beat him. One of them was reported to have a knife! What is MLB coming to????

Munson Man
The coach was interviewed on TV this morning. He said he's sore and a bit shaken up, but essentially OK - thank goodness! He's as mystified as everyone else is as to what caused these bracheocephalic cretins to target him; said it just came out of nowhere.

Nice adjective, Munson Man.

Anyone betting this is "alcohol-related"?

Maybe it's part of some new reality show for Fox.

Not a great day for Comiskey, that's for sure. Doesn't do much for the reputation of the South Side either.

That's the first thing I thought of last night too. I get so damn tired of the tone locals (read: white northsiders) often take when discussing Comiskey. ("I'd go to a Sox game, but I don't want to go down there.")

But the Cletus the Slack Jawed Yokel freakshow being shown on highlights over and over certainly won't help the Comiskey cause much.

Have these guys stated WHY they did this or are they waiting to be invited onto Jerry Springer?

Gosh, as if the Southside didn't have it bad enough already! Of course, 99.98% of Sox fans are decent baseball-loving folks, but unfortunately it only takes a few to foster a bad rap. And by the way, I'm imagining that these two clods are about as dumb as rocks with or without etoh. P

I'd say it's closer to 75%. Quite honestly it's gotten to the point now where I make one token appearance at Fenway each season. The rest I'm content to watch on TV. Too many people are intoxicated. There's too much coarse behavior. This year, shortly after we'd taken our seats this lout sittng behind us began cursing at someone a few rows in front who had stood to allow other folks to take their seats. "Will ya' f**kin' sit down! Will ya' f**kin' sit down already! Ya fukin' ass****!" Moments later the people who had the ticket to the seat he was sitting in arrived and he moved on. We just looked at each other incredulous. Not even his seat. Unfortunately it was one of several similar events that occurred within our earshot during the course of the game. Since it was a Yankees game, there was plenty of the "Yankees suck, Jeter swallows!" chants both in and outside the park (also available on T-shirts). It's a low class minority of fans who engage in this behavior. Personally, I'd suggest $12 beers to limit drinking. I think this would be a better alternative to increasing ticket prices to keep out the riff-raff and penalizing other fans who are struggling to buy tickets already.

Read this on a Yahoo story:

The Chicago Tribune reported in its on-line edition Friday that the son told a television camera crew as he was led away in handcuffs: "He (Gamboa) flipped us off. He got what he deserved."

That's the only mention of "why?" I've seen yet.

Torgauer, We're talking South SIDE, not South END!

As for Gamboa's alleged bird launching, let the game tapes begin to roll!

Gamboa said today that he has never said or done anything to get any fans angry at him. The report I saw mentioned how he's spent 20-plus years in the minors before getting a shot at a major league coaching job (he was with the Cubs before joining the Royals). Obviously this isn't like some spoiled brat of a player who might do something that ends up provoking the nutjobs.

When I first saw the incident, I hadn't realized it was a father & son (ah, nothing like familial bonding) and wondered whether it was some sort of gang initiation. Afterwards, did Konerko actually say that security should have let the players beat the crap out the two for an hour or so?

Why did the ump step back and let it happen?

That's been addressed in
this \"Ask the Ump\" thread.

This may be old news, but haven't seen it posted yet...

I heard a very brief item on the local news last night that the father involved in this attack supposedly called a friend from his mobile phone, and told him, "I hope you're watching the game, 'cause we're about to be on TV!"

Jaysus. And they say that all the media whores are here in Los Angeles? I hope the ass**** and his son are happy with their 15 SECONDS--they're not even going to get the other 14:45--of fame.

I just got back from the Yankee game where some wannabe ran around right field (similar scrawny trailer trash). Of course he was thrown down by security; naturally the more immature fans shouted, "Let Him Go!" and cheered his infantile antics.

Why do people do this? Yeah, some chick passing Jeter her phone number is one thing, but some ass**** looking for his fifteen minutes is just pathetic (especially so soon after the incident in Chicago).

Morons are everywhere.

About 5 years ago, some rocket scientist ran on to the field at Anaheim Stadium--as it was still called then--and after running around a bit, started to climb up the foul pole!. Apart from the erotic aspect of that, what a feckin' idiot! So, the ex-football player security guards caught him and landed a few choice punches before dragging him away with extreme prejudice.

I feel that this kind of thing must have a zero-tolerance policy.

The father in the father/son duo did a phone interview with a paper, and has apologized for his behavior. He told a story about the recent tragedy in his life that led to drug and alcohol abuse that he says caused him to attack coach Gamboa...
