Aubie,

I'm having problems finding a place to stay for the Mullet Man. Apparently Gulf Shores and Perdido Key are wiped out. Another problem is that BG and I are bringing the dogs.

What is the closest chain-type motel on I-10 to the FloraBama?
Aubie In Bham
Well, because of the hurricanes and all of the reconstruction (not to mention construction) it is very difficult to find any hotels, especially on the Perdido Key side. Gulf Shores wasn't as hard hit as the Pensacola side. Would a condo work? If so, I'll get my friends down there to see where the best one would be available.
GatorJamie
Condo would be our #1 choice. Big challenge is finding a place that will allow our lovable pooches. Farley is now 5 months old, 53 pounds!

GJ, try this company, I believe they take pets.

Out-frickin-standing Aubie! I'll give them a call.

In the meantime, I must prepare my "Ms. Mullet Man 2005" sash for the run leg. If I'm gonna come in last, I'm gonna come in stylin'. biggrin.gif

Please, please, please wear a mullet-wig!

Big kudos GJ! Happy to hear you accomplished the triathalon and even happier to have you back on the board.
faydman
congrats.

a few (somewhat out of shape) buddies and i are planning on doing a sprint triathlon this summer. i really need to work on my swimming...
GatorJamie
Thanks, George and fayd! Word to the wise: if you're just starting out, look for a tri that has a POOL SWIM. Most sprints do. That way you can work on keeping your heart rate down while doing better swim strokes without having other weird murky-water panic issues.

Let us know how you do!
thersis
love means never having to say you're sorry, but HARDWARE IS FOREVER! congratulations! today a sprint, tomorrow, our very own ironwoman. woo!hoo!

the pool swim is a good piece of advice, but as for the "weird murky-water panic issues", i get a feeling the operative word there is "issues", best dealt with on an individual basis smile.gif .

and gj, where ever did you get the idea that you are so much as one ounce overweight? this is utter nonsense. you, darling, are simply a woman of substance!

congratulations, again!
Aubie In Bham
GJ, so the swim attacked again? I'd have to take a damn bottle of Xanax to swim out 200 yards in the ocean. Anxiety would kill me. Congrats on the 2nd place finish.

Did you stay around for the demolition of the Florabama? Better yet, did you dontate a bra?

Just a quick post: I finished my first Olympic-distance triathlon yesterday (1 mile lake swim, 22.3 miles on the bike, 10k run). I'll post my race report after I write it.

Congratulations GJ! I admire anyone who completes a triathlon because I just don't have the mental determination to do one myself!
Way to go you band lovin' Gaytor freak smile.gif

Good for you, GJ! Anyone who can handle the run can handle a triathlon. Too bad that leaves me out! sad.gif

And yes, maintain the mullet at all times!

Oops! I just started a Triathlon thread, then read to find that this already existed.

Good to see some GLBT triathletes out here in the big wide sports world!

Are any of you going to the OutGames in the triathlon?
If so, I'll be seeing you there!

Ok Gang my newest addiction is training for tris...As a 34 year old novice athlete I have lots to learn and am very new to this. I bought my bike on Saturday of last week. I am posting this on 3 of the "tri" forums to try and get some activity going. I ran my first marathon this March and had so much fun and had enough left in me to do the "ironman swim" (Which I did not do, but the day after wish I had just to prove it) I really get high off of stuff over an hour. Thought to myself, "why not try something that could take me 6-7 hours to finish?" so I am doing my first 1/2 ironman here in AR in August......what a GREAT time to run 13.1 miles. So my first ride out I did 19 miles which was fun and second ride out I had a blowout after 9mins37 seconds so I learned lots that day. Before my 1/2 Ironman I will sign up for one shorter distance so I can learn about Tris on an easier distance. Next summer plan is to do an Ironman. Probably one in Europe since they don't sell out. Worked close to Frankfurt so maybe there or have friends in Zurich I can stay with. Love any advice on which Ironmans to shoot for. Thanks........

Well no response in Tri thread but I am going to "tri" again to get it started.

Saturday I did my first 1/2 ironman and my 2nd tri. Was in Degray Lake Arkansas and I had GREAT time even though I had the WORST run of my life.

I can send the race report if anyone is interested but the basics are. Email me at this screen name on Yahoo and I will send it one.

Swim 40 mins, Bike 3:20 run (UGH HERE WAS BAD PART) 3:15. Got done and it was 101 Degrees. I did 7:20 and not bad for 35 year old beginner. I finished strong even though I can tell you about the Cramps I had during the run.....all in my abdomen....Too much clif's during bike and too much gatorade.....Anyway........I am probably signing up for ironman. It will be SO AWESOME I was actually telling my self in last mile in all that pain........NOW I CAN DO AN IRONMAN!!!!!

I know, I am on crack!

Love to hear eveyone's experiences with first tris or first 1/2s

Best,

Drew

Just wanted to make sure I recognized the awesome job done by the OutGames organizers for the Olympic Distance Triathlon.
I have never had so much fun in my life.

I was completely overwhelmed by the,um, shall we say, delightful bodies! GLBT athletes are the BEST!

The competition was excellent. Had the bike and run of my life there, and my swim wasnt too shabby either.

Ended up 20th out of the water, 13th off the bike, then ran my guts out and ended up 4th overall, 1st 50 to 54 year old. Man, I tell you it is a rush to stand up on an Olympic-type podium and receive a gold medal.

May we all experience some such thing in our sports lives.

Would love to hear from any other triathlete that went in the OutGames.

Sincerely, Zoomrunner

Anybody here participating in the 'mini-sprint triathalon' in San Diego around the first of October?

I'm training a guy for the swimming portion.

Sad Triathlete here..........Today was sign up for FL Ironman, was to be my first one, but could not get registered in time. Was trying from opening at 11 am, no luck. Would like to Blame Active.com but could have been my mistake.

Sad Sad Sad Sad when one has been dreaming of doing your first and you set your mind on it and make the effort and it doesn't work.

I will be fine with time, and try some other Ironman ASAP, just might have to skip the "brandname" IRONMAN for next season, or go international..........or Community Fund for FL.

Frustrated and sad after all the commitment (Dreaming about it for over 2 years now and worked on it since I realized I had it in me in Nov 05) Is probably just a small thing that I have to spend more money for community fund, but we always want the easy way first don't we?!

Sleep will make me feel better

Sorry to read you didn't get the registration to achieve your goal.

Did you find out why you couldn't register? Too many people trying at once; limited number of spaces available; technical problem. I hope you don't run into the same problem next time you try to register.
Erstegeiger
As of now I believe I am in as a community fund entry.

They have not emailed me, but the money cleared my account last week. They did say 7-10 business days to get paperwork done.

I read a few posts on slowtwitch.com and others had problems. With 2000 people registering that day and the online resources for at least half of those people I would blame technical problems. I was close to finishing by the time they were officially full (around 45 minutes after they opened online registration) and my computer kept giving me error messages from active.com.

After all that work and not getting in they did add insult to injury by sending me an official Ironman Registration Number 5 minutes after I was locked out of registration. I will be happy to do the race, but might ignore the ironman registration number when I fill out my online community fund registration only on moral grounds.

It was devistating, but now moving forward with anticipation for that hard training from August thru November. I have enough to do this year before that.

This hobby is a nasty addiction!

Good luck in November 2007. You still have one year of training to achieve your time goal.
Erstegeiger
Thanks Zeno:

I am training for a marthon first...........looking to take 1 hour off my first Marathon last year at the same time.

Then take 4-6 weeks off of "official" training and then back to training and building up my base.

Still thinking about if I want to do a 13 or 21 week build up. I appreciate any advice if anyone has some.

Since I have a HUGE series of projects in the fall less is probably more so I can get those projects prepared all summer while I "play around" with shorter distance tris and then do the 13 week build up starting in August.

Best,

Drew

So maybe I am just talking to an empty room, but I would enjoy chatting with the tri people out there.

I am just under 5 weeks from my marathon and also today because of busy schedule changes signed up for IM Louisville August 26th instead of IM FL Nov. 3

So EXCITED!!!!

What I know about IM Louisville

The email from them today

Thanks for your interest in the Ford Ironman Louisville! Event and course details will be finalized in February.

· The Web address for the event is: http://ironman.com/events/ironman/louisville

· The event reached its registration capacity on October 30, 2006 and is no longer accepting entries. We anticipate offering a limited number of community fund slots beginning February 1, 2007, so please stay tuned to the website for details. There is no waiting list.

I AM SO EXCITED!!!

Drew

· If you decide to withdraw from the race after registering, you must submit your request in writing by July 21, 2007, to receive a partial ($150) refund.

· The Galt House Hotel & Suites, The Seelbach Hilton and Louisville Marriott Downtown are official event hotels and are offering discounted rates. Be sure to mention Ironman to receive the discounted rate. The Galt House will host athlete check-in and the expo and is near the swim start. The Seelbach Hilton is across the street from the finish line. The Louisville Marriott Downtown is conveniently located to all event activities.

· The Transition Area will be at the Great Lawn, which is directly adjacent to the Ohio River.

· The swim will be in the Ohio River and may possibly be a point-to-point swim with the current. The river meets safety and water quality standards set forth by USA Triathlon. Expected water temperature is 74-80 degrees, so we're not quite sure if wetsuits will be permitted.

· The early and last miles of the bike will be entirely flat. Expect some rolling hills during the middle miles. It will be a two-loop course.

· The run will be two loops and primarily flat.

· Topographical maps will be available once the bike ands run courses are finalized.

· The finish will be at Fourth Street Live, which is downtown Louisville's entertainment district.

· Since 1971 the normal air temperature in Louisville on August 26 ranges from 66-84 degrees; average relative humidity is 72%.

· The event has 45 age group and 5 pro slots for that year's Ford Ironman World Championship (Kona). There will be at least one slot per age group.

· Plan on being in Louisville for at least four days. Athlete check-in ends on Friday (Aug. 24), mandatory bike/gear bag check-in is Saturday, the race is Sunday and the awards brunch is Monday
