Is
this getting any coverage in the U.S.? I've been watching a bit on the CBC. (Results
by event). American Kelli White won the women's 100m, in a field minus Marion Jones. Bizarrely, Merlene Ottey was in the competition (not in the final) competing for... Slovenia.
The men's 100m final goes tonight.
There has been some controversy over the new false start rule, with American Jon Drummond lying on the track and refusing to leave after being disqualified for false starting.

There has been scant coverage on US TV about the championships; even ESPN (SportsCenter) hasn't been covering it; ESPN/ESPN2 is scheduled to begin coverage on Tuesday.
The Drummond incident seems amazing--most of the competitors have said the changes--one false start & the possibility that a leg flinch could set off the computerized system--would result in something like this.

The
CBC is showing it in prime time weekdays, plus weekends. It's interesting the lack of coverage in the U.S., considering the U.S. is a powerhouse in track.

Mr Drummond knew the rules when he went to the championships.. he is just a bad loser..he cannot plead ignorance aobut this..

Ballplayer3: Drummond is not pleading ignorance; he's pleading injustice.
He did not false start. He simply twitched his ankle ... it was not moving forward out of the blocks, just sideways. He got a raw deal.
This doesn't excuse his behavior but I'm empathetic to his situation: he's a long-time, world class sprinter. This is probably his last hurrah and something as inconsequential as a twitch has cost him a chance for final glory.

I agree with you Ballplayer3, John merely twitched against the blocks and he was penalized with a false start. However, I was very disappointed about his behavior following the false start, throwing a tantrum like that was totally out of line. Come on John!!! You are a better person than that....geez!
On another note, kudo's to Kelli White for winning the 100m! You go girl!

Perdita Felicien wins gold for Canada in the women's 100m hurdles. Woo hoo! Apparently, she is the first women to ever win an individual gold for Canada in the World Track & Field Championships.

Gold medalist in the Womens 100m and 200m - Kelli White... say it ain't so Kelli -
"IAAF statement on Kelli White
Saturday 30 August 2003
Paris - A sample provided by Kelli White, USA after the 100m Final in Paris has tested positive for Modafinil. The IAAF has not yet received the results of the analysis on her sample provided after the 200m Final.
Today, we have received an explanation from the athlete to the following effect; Ms White has been taking the substance on prescription to treat a medical condition that runs in her family.
As both the nature of the substance and the content of her explanation require further inquiry and investigation, the IAAF has taken the view that bearing in mind the very serious consequences for the athlete of being suspended and being removed from competition at this late stage, the most appropriate course of action is to allow her to compete pending the completion of the necessary scientific and factual investigations."

To follow up on ironjohn8's posting about Kelli White:
She claims the positive drug test stems from prescription medicine taken for narcolepsy. The positive test was for the stimulant modafinil which stimulates the central nervous system and is used to combat fatigue. It should be noted that it has also been used for the pupose of performance enhancement.
All this on top of the problems faced by Jerome Young, who won the 400 meters at the World Championships, only to have to admit that in 1999 he faikled a drug test but was allowed to compete at the 2000 Olympics. the head of the World Anti-Doping Agency has called for the US 1600-meter relay team from the Sydney Olympics to return its medals because of this & there have been questions as to whether there is a double standard in the drug testing, with one standard for the US and another for the rest of the world.
