Is anybody following the Maccabiah Games?

I know we sometimes claim that the media doesn't cover the Gay Games, but it seems that they don't cover the Maccabiah (Jewish Olympics) Games either... despite the 10,000 participants and many big names.

Triple gold medalist (swimming) Lenny Krayzelburg is the honorary U.S. team captain (he competed in the 2001 Maccabiah Games). Team USA site.

I also just read this morning that Canada's Minister of Justice, Irwin Cotler, the man who put forward the same-sex marriage legislation, will be competing in the Masters division ping-pong at the Maccabiah Games. Who knew that our 65 year old Justice Minister was an athlete, too? Team Canada website.

I went to the website and couldn't figure out exactly what it is...could someone explain??

I've heard the term Maccabiah Games before, just not aware of its nature exactly.

Hey Blueraider. Basically they are the Jewish Games.

Is anyone else struck by the irony of the "Jewish Olympics" being named for the dynasty responsible for the end of the Hellenistic occupation of the Land of Israel?

thanks, I sensed thats what it was. When I went to the website, I was having difficulty navigating and finding info about event and results, venues etc. etc. Kinda puzzling...
