Would that "amazing backdrop" be Gaudi's never-seems-to-be-finished masterpiece La Sagrada Familia?

Begun in 1883 and to finish (hopefully ) in 10-15 years, it's also his burial place.

Barcelona's near the top of my list of gay-friendly places I'd like to visit. Oh and BTW, thanks for those great pics.

Did you know that he was penniless and living in the streets of Barcelona. He was found feverish and passed out on a street. They took him to a hospital where he eventually passed away.

When I was in college, he was one of my favorite Architects to study. It's too bad that many of his accomplishments have been torn down for newer buildings. frown

I love Gaudi's work.

Here a slide show of some more pics:

It's always bothered me that his name got attached to a term for excessive, tasteless ornamentation (gaudy). A lot of art nouveau stuff is overdone, but Gaudi's stuff isn't at all tasteless and excessive--it's highly ornamented, but it works.

Diver Alexandre Despatie (he's in one of the pics link in the first post above) has won the gold medal in the 10 meter platform. He's only 18! He will be under a lot of pressure at the Olympics from the public to win again. I hope he can cope well with the high expectations.

That follows the win of another Canadian, Emilie Heymans, for the women's 10 meter platform.
Aussie Bomber
Ian Thorpe becomes the 1st person to win 3 consecutive world titles.

JC: "Gaudy" doesn't come from the architect Gaudi. Gaudy is derived from an old word "gaud," meaning a showy ornament. Thank goodness English doesn't disparage a gifted, even though eccentric, architect!

Just got back from Barcelona, and the diving venue is an awesome location. Top award for Hot Diver has to go to Britain's Tony Ally---amazing bod, handsome face and great smile. The 3-meter springboard men's finals were remarkable for the number of bad dives--the semis featured better diving.

Oh, and in Barcelona they're estimating another 50-60 years to complete Sagrada Familia. And visit BCN now, cuz you can tour Gaudi's Casa Battlo!!!!! And do Le Pedrera At Night --- champagne and free music on the rooftop from 9:30-midnight. Just in time for dinner in barcelona! Fantastic city, people and food. I want to go back NOW! lol

Aussie coach Don Talbot must be choking on crow after his statements diminishing Phelp's accomplishments as compared to Thorpe's. Phelps's resonse was that Talbot had "put a fire in my butt":

QUOTE
Talbot said recently the 18-year-old had done \"nothing in the world\" compared with Thorpe and still has to prove himself at top level.

\"We know that Phelps is a good boy, but people trying to say he's a greater swimmer than Ian – absolute nonsense,\" said Talbot.

\"He's showed promise in minor meets, no pressure. When he gets under the pressure with all the great swimmers around him and each event he gets up will be a different one, he's got to master that.

\"Ian Thorpe has got all the runs on the board right now. The promise with Phelps is there but for people saying he's going to outdo Thorpie, I live to see that day.\"

Phelps's coach Bob Bowman said he had printed out Talbot's comments and given them to his swimmer to use as motivation leading into the eight-day meet.

It worked.
The result: an amazing two world records broken 45 minutes apart. If he keeps this up they may have to rename the Baltimore harbor after this guy. And it's not over yet.

Can he wear those things any lower and still be legal?

100m freestyle WR holder Alexander Popov's wave is becoming more popular than the Queen's...and a lot sexier IMO

The great Alexander Popov is still fast in the sprints. He won the 50m and 100m freestyle. *Waves back at Popov* biggrin.gif
