Wendy Williams, a NYC radio personality, made a comment about DJ and the OUT editor yesterday and quickly changed the subject. She started talking about it again today. I didn't think DJ fit the profile for the editor's boyfriend. Heard some mention of this earlier on SportsCenter. What's the deal? Anybody else hear about this?Details please.

Didn't the OUT editor say the player he was boffing....er, dating, was "not a superstar"? Somehow don't think Jeter fits that profile. Of course, who knows how much truth there is to any of that. For all we know, Mr. Editor may just be overcompensating for his dried up love life by claiming to be dating a baseball player.

His words were "not the biggest star" on his East Coast team, a recognized but not idolized player. Not Jeter. Sorry, I still believe the editor.

There's seems to be a great deal of wishful thinking going on around this, and of course who wouldn't want Derek Jeter: he's fine!
And the OUT editor is clearly needy for attention.

Although we would love to believe this is true, you just can't believe a word Wendy Williams says. She was on in Philly for a while, and all she does is gossip and then claims she hears it from source.

That's not how you play the game! You're supposed to say: I'm dating a Hollywood star. Not Hollywood's biggest star, but one recognizably linked romantically to Jennifer Anniston. Then we'd get to spend the entire shelf life of the magazine debating the identity of your Hollywood mystery star.

So Zaac you mentioned SportsCenter. What exactly did they say about this "gossip"?

Dang! See, this is why I'm not the high-falutin' editor of some mediocre gay rag.
I'd also be interested to know what -- if anything -- ESPN said about this gossip. Not that it would necessarily have any more credibility.
I read that piece by the OUT editor when it first came out, and as earnest as he sounded, I still wondered about his motivations afterward. I came to the conclusion that his sole motivation was to say "LOOK AT ME!! I'M DATING A PRO ATHLETE!!"
"I don't like to repeat gossip, so I'm only going to say this once...."

He wrote an article in GQ a few months ago. Interesting stuff. Though I dunno if that's the best way to treat a closeted bf.

I read both aritcles. On the onset, the editor's words grabs your attention, Wow!!! A Major Leaguer Who is it, Who is it, Who is it? Inquiring minds want to know.
Once you get into both articles, you begin to see a certian flavor of the articles. In both articles, you begin to hear the editor scream:
LOOK AT ME...I'M DATING A MAJOR LEAUGE BASEBALL PLAYER!!! OH THE PAINS!!!!! I'M EDITOR OF A GAY RAG, OOOO THE PARTIES, THE GOODLOOKING GUYS..AND I GET TO DATE PROFESSIONAL JOCKS....OH WOE IS ME, MY GAYDAR DIDN'T EVEN GO OFF WHEN WE MET, HE SO STRAIGHT ACTING/APPEARING.....DON'T HATE ME BECAUSE I'M BEAUTIFUL...GEEEEESHHHHHH
If I was the Major Leaguer, I'd grab my cup and jock and cleat it on out of there, double time.
The editor eludes to the fact that his pro-jock boyfriend is testing the waters, edging to be more open and such gives him the green light for such articles. Of course, writing the articles didn't hurt circulation or the self promotion angle either...
It's odd though, after the articles, you'd think every sleezy tabloid would be hounding Mr. Lemmon trail to expose what would be a paydirt find for their own rags. Even Jim Rome did a piece on it....
What drama....
Seems to me, if Mr. Lemmon really cared about his boyfriend, be he a Major Leaguer or a Mailman, you'd think he would value the relationship and protect it as much as possible from the fangs of a media circus. Oppps, that's right, I forgot, he's an editor of a rag himself.... mmm Nevermind
Just my thought....

Unless it's a huge star, I don't imagine the sleazy tabloids would be much interested. I suspect their readership wouldn't even recognize the names of most 2nd tier players.

Love Jeter in the gatorade commercial - boogeying with the headphones on. BTW Vince Carter is shimmying near the end in typical super-sexy fashion.
Saw it on MTV where it probably wouldn't hurt the marketability of either if he was gay - it might even increase their popularity..Oh and I don't know if this has been posted before but this is on bunch of cute shortstops:

it's been a while since I read the Out piece, but I think you really hit the nail on the head, satxbuddy. What I do remember is that Lemon's article was pretty much the most self-indulgent, "it's ALL about ME" piece of shit I've ever read. I used to wonder if Lemon were actually telling the truth (yeah, right) or it was just a figment of his imagination, but I've long since stopped caring. Either way, Lemon is pathetic.

I have no clue what to think of the OUT piece, But I was about 5 feet from jeter in uniform on Sunday at a spring training game in Tampa and was very pleasantly surprised. I never really thought much about his looks or body be he looked great up close! Thank God for baseball uniforms!

you said it Rudy....A-Gonz is another reason for me to get to Wrigley to see a game -- or even a road game but I always prefer to see guys who look like that in white home pants rather than the road grays ....in either event, I have a feeling the Cubs ratings on WGN will increase thanks to the hottest lookin SS in the majors.

Thanks, Sportinlife, for an excellent picture of Alex G! I got to see him a lot when he was with the Blue Jays, and was not happy to see him traded. The Cubs don't get much TV coverage where I live.

Michael Musto:
Sex talk prevailed at Out editor Brendan Lemon's Food Bar party for his novel, Last Night, thanks to my own pervy prompting. I asked author Edmund White if he really had sex with a grown-up when he was 12, and White said, "What people always leave out of the story is that I did the seducing. I went with my father to Acapulco, and I used to do a pianist at the bar. He wasn't coming on to me at all, though. I felt I had to do all the work!" Here's where I'd normally inject some uproarious "pianist envy" joke, but for once I'll rise above the opportunity.
Lemon (who wisely hires me) told me his book's "dirty enough to hold your interest, but not so dirty to shock your grandmother. It's full of baseball, but it's still fiction." Hey, I got that one—Lemon famously dates a ballplayer, though he still won't say which goddamned one. All he'd tell me is that the guy's with an East Coast team "and he's probably going to start coming to these things." I won't blow his cover, mainly because I don't know who any athletes are except Cathy Rigby!

This Lemon guy is a joke. Out magazine is very very gay and I don't go for that sort of thing. I read that article and must say that this Lemon queen is a mess! Get a clue Miss Thing! I doubt very much if he's dating a ball player-he's too nelly and swishy!

If you don't believe Lemon your best revenge is to go to the book store read a bit of his book and leave it on the shelf. That's what I did.
I read quite a lot of sport-related fiction and this one bored me to tears...or maybe it was laughter.
BTW Tigersfan some masculine guys are into nelly. I guess it has to do with not wanting to admit they like men so they go for a "girl with a d***".

Once again, sissyphobia rears it's "straight acting" head.
And why the hell does anyone need "proof" of Brendan Lemon's boyfriend's MLB status?

Regardless of whether or not Lemon is butch, his articles about his baseball boyfriend have always struck me as preening braggadocio - "Look how hot a boyfriend I was able to land! Wouldn't you like to know who he is? Tee hee!"
I'm not the editor of a magazine that's supposedly about the virtues of being honest and forthright about homosexuality, and I can't imagine entering a lifelong (or the gay equivalent) relationship with someone who'll make 3 am booty calls but won't risk being seen eating a meal with me in public for fear that someone might guess. (Not terribly likely before Lemon published the article in the first place). Certainly not bragging about the fact to everyone who'll listen.
Then again, maybe they're right for each other. Who's to say which is worse, serving the same function as a vacuum pump or being regarded as a status symbol not unlike a fancy sports car?

I'll apologize right from the start for my cynicism, but I'll believe Lemon's "My Boyfriend is a Major League Ballplayer" story only when alleged boyfriend comes out of the closet to the general public. Without hearing that revelation, I'm afraid I'm compelled to express my belief that this relationship is only a fantasy. It doesn't really trouble me that Lemon's affair may be fictional because, I believe that much good has come from bringing up the subject of gays in professional sports. Perhaps it has even helped a majority of athletes and fans feel more at ease with the idea, and may enable a REAL Major League gay baseball player to step out of the closet sooner. And I'll gladly admit that I'm wrong if Lemon's romance proves true...
I'll also say here that I feel I can trust the claim made by gay former Major League umpire Dave Pallone that he could have fielded an All-Star team with the gay Pro Baseball players he knew during his umpiring days!

Hello Upm25! Your contributions to these OutSports Message Boards are greatly appreciated and admired. I was quite moved by umpire Dave Pallone's autobiography when it was first published a few years ago. Do you have literary aspirations of your own, which might someday find fulfillment in a book of your experiences as a Major League umpire? I would most certainly be one of your readers (and in this regard I feel I may be speaking the sentiments of many, many others who enjoy your posts here.) Your integrity is highly valued.
