Full Version: Poor ol' George

Chill-Trick
As a giddy Sox fan just about unable to wait for Spring Training...I'm getting some satisfaction with the thought that poor George must be stressing out big time. At the time I'm writing this, Pettite hasn't officially gone to Houston yet, but it appears that he will, the whole Sheffield deal blew up. Theo got Schilling, possibly A-Rod too. The entire Season usually builds into the All Star climax, then the end of the summer fandom...but I truly believe that from Day One in Spring Training, Red Sox Nation will be screaming at the top of our lungs all year long.

And also....KEEP NOMAHHHHH!!!! Get rid o' Manny

In the wake of the Pettitte signing AND a possible blowup of the Sheffield "deal" -- it'd be nice to see Steinbush get played -- I wouldn't get too giddy, Bosox fans. I think GSIII may make Vlad Guerrero a co-owner if that's what it takes to sign him.

It must be worse than hell working for Steinbrenner today. George must be in total panic desperation mode! The Dodgers should dangle Kevin Brown in front of the Boss like a pork chop in front of one of Richard Simmons' Deal-a Meal clients. I know they want to dump Brown's contract but they can surely get more than just Weaver in return. Dodgers need offense badly.

George_vikingfan, I think the LA times summed up the Dodgers situation last August with "Dodgers need bat man, get Robin." biggrin.gif

I agree though that Poor ol' George must be freaking out. The Yankees will try to get any decent pitcher or pitchers to counter the moves by Boston.

Who is left (pitcher wise) on the free agent market now?
Joe in Philly
They're already working on it...

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Kevin Brown is probably headed to New York, giving the Yankees a replacement for Andy Pettitte in their starting rotation and the Los Angeles Dodgers some financial flexibility.

The Yankees and Dodgers agreed to the outline of a tentative trade Thursday, with Brown going to the Yankees for right-hander Jeff Weaver, two minor leaguers and $3 million, two baseball officials said on condition of anonymity.

Brown, who has the right to block a trade, must approve any deal and has not yet been asked about it, agent Scott Boras said.

All players must pass physicals, and the Yankees want to review Brown's contract before signing off on the swap, the officials said.

The Kevin Brown deal seems to be done; I'm looking forward to seeing if the Yankees are going to provide a plane to carry him home, as was the case with his Dodger contract.

All last season, I was worried that the Yanks were going to be caught with their pants down, pitching wise. Clemens was a sure thing through out the year, while Wells and Pettite were question marks.

Who is left?

George can't bully his way through negotiations as more players will choose family over team loyalty.

a healthy Brown and Vazquez are an upgrade for NY (Rob Neyer)

...frankly, Pettitte's not a great pitcher. He was great in 1997 and excellent in 2002 (when he wasn't on the disabled list), but most years he's been merely good. ...Pettitte is [Houston's] third-best starter, behind Roy Oswalt and Wade Miller.

Your link headline is a bit deceiving there Bill. In today's Los Angeles Times, they had a sidebar about Brown:

2001: On disabled list three times because of back and elbow problems, had surgery on right elbow

2002: On disabled list twice because of elbow and back problems, including season-ending back surgery

If Brown, at 39, makes it through the 2004 season without going on the DL, it would be news.

The press here in Los Angeles can't stand him. The phrase "abrasive personality" is common so it should be interesting to see how those pussycats in the New Yawk press deal with him.

And how much will George burn if Clemens "unretires" and joins the Astros, as is being rumored! Not sure if I believe it will happen, but just the mere possibility must have George in some state!
Jim Allen
I would personally buy tickets for an Astros v. Dodgers game if Clemens pitched and then boo the crap out of him. After all that "farewell" hoo ha in October, what a twat to "unretire". Michael Jordan much?
