I've gotten a stationary bike to use in my quest to get my butt into shape. Unfortunately, while using the bike, I've noticed that certain parts of my body (south of the equator), go numb while I'm riding. Is there anything I can do to overcome this situation? Do padded cycling shorts help? I'm really at a loss what to do, any advice would be helpful.

If you do some searches on the internet, I know this is a common problem and there has been plenty written about it. Good luck!

A couple of things: you could try and do your biking ala a spinning class and alternate sitting and getting off the seat while riding...just make sure you know correct form, etc., so you don't hurt your knees or feet.
Also, there are new bikes these days geared towards making room for a rider's privates. I suggest checking out a replacement seat; padding won't necessarily eliminate the numbing or the excess heat down there which isn't so good for the testicles.

I choose the bikes with the wider padded seats when I have a choice at the gym. If it's loose sometimes the rocking/squirming motion can irritate.
Maybe getting a wide padded seat and making sure it's on tight would help.
Oh yea, and make sure you try adjusting the height - lowering a little may help.

Hey there,
Yes, this is a common problem, and yes, it can become serious, honestly. When I started doing long distance biking (100 miles a day), I had the same problem.
Specialized makes seats to account for this. They are ergonomic and split in the back to relieve the pressure of sitting on a bike seat. Most any bike shop should have them, or they are available online from places like Performance Bikes.
